Editorial Comment - Hermann Hearsay Endorses Joe Gleeson and John Penning

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, Editor

The Editorial Board of Hermann Hearsay announced on 2/12 that we are endorsing the candidacies of Joe Gleeson for Hermann Ward 2 Alderman and John Penning for Ward 1 Alderman. We have known these two gentlemen for a long time, and we believe that they are the best candidates to represent their respective wards and help lead our small community forward into the future.

Information received today from a credible source close to the Hermann City Administration has confirmed that we are completely justified in endorsing these two candidates.  Our source prefers to remain anonymous, and we shall honor his (her) request.

Don't forget to get out and vote your conscience.  The election is now just 6 weeks away!

Editorial Comment - Things That Bother Me About Some Internet Websites

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, Editor

Date:  2/22/2011
Post:  1,733

I've learned a lot about the internet, computers and hosting a website since I've worked here at Hermann Hearsay.  Some of the things I've learned bother me.

For instance, did you know that some websites place very intrusive "tracking cookies" on your personal computer when you visit their site.  This bothers me?  Why are they attaching their intrusive "tracking cookies"?  What do they want to know about you and me and our web-surfing patterns?  What other personal information are they trying to surreptitiously extract from our computers?  What do they do with our information?  Are they using our personal information for some sinister illegal purpose?  Are they selling our personal information to third parties?  Who are these third parties?  Why are they willing to pay for our personal information?  Is this how unscrupulous website operators really make their money as opposed to selling paid advertisements and/or paid subscriptions for their website?  Do they fully disclose what they are doing with it?  It makes me wonder, and well, it bothers me.

Have you noticed that some websites require you to "register" with them in order to gain FREE or PAID access to their site?  Why do they want your name, address, email address, telephone number and other personal information?  How many websites have you "registered" on in order to gain FREE or PAID access?  Do you trust the website and its operators?  Have you read their "Terms and Conditions"?  What are the risks and rewards associated with revealing personal information to websites on the internet?

Did you know that some website operators pay $500 per year for an invasive and intrusive software program called 'Spiral 16'?  I understand that this particular software has the ability to "mine" all sorts of information about a website.  For example, when this software is attached to a website, the owner of the software can obtain lots of information about the website's visitors and readers.  Information like IP addresses, ISPs, internet surfing patterns, and other things.

There are basically three ways a website operator can make money:
  1. charge a subscription fee for accessing all portions of their website,
  2. charge advertisers to place "banner ads" on their site much the same way as newspapers charge for their display and classified ads, and
  3. gather and sell your personal information to third parties.
I want you to think about the websites you are visiting.  Can you trust them?  Have they fully and clearly disclosed their "Terms and Conditions"?  Do you understand them?

The "Terms and Conditions" here at Hermann Hearsay are very simple.  We CURRENTLY DO NOT:
  1. charge a subscription fee for accessing all portions of OUR website,
  2. charge advertisers to place "banner ads" on their site much the same way as newspapers charge for their display and classified ads, and
  3. gather and sell your personal information to third parties.
Because I have experienced some problems with websites in this regard, I plan to share further information with our readers in future postings.  I will give you specifics, and I will name names.

Editorial Comment: He's baaaaaaaaack! Hey there, Ralphie Boy!

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, Editor

Post:  1,674

Ralphie Boy apparently got off his meds again today and fired off three (3) more angry comments.  Ralphie Boy is now up to a grand total of eleven (11) comments which have been unfit to publish.

Now that, in and of itself, is really not "news" anymore.  I'm just amazed at how obsessed this guy has become with Hermann Hearsay.  He persists in wanting us to publish his false accusations against an honest man who resides here in Hermann.  But he won't provide credible evidence to back up his accusations, and he won't attribute his information to a specific source or sources.

Ralphie Boy doesn't seem to understand that we just can't publish serious accusations and malicious rumors in the absence of credible proof.  To publish and amplify a false accusation or rumor against an honest man would be highly unprofessional, and doing so could very well expose us to a civil lawsuit for defamation of character.

Ralphie Boy, get back on your meds!  And please stay away from our website!

Editorial Comment: Poor Richard's HermannMoNews is going viral!!!!!

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, Editor

Date:  2/7/2011
Post:  1,670

HermannMoNews, a local online news site we have recommended to our own readers, has already gone global and now it is going viral!

Created and published by Poor Richard a mere 4 months ago, HermannMoNews has met with unprecedented acceptance in our local area and the site is also being read by people from all over the world!  How cool is that!  A local success story!

Poor Richard is not one to boast about his own accomplishments.  You won't find repeated shameless self-promotion on Poor Richard's website.  No!  Poor Richard doesn't have the time to waste patting himself on the back!  Instead he spends the better part of his waking hours finding and researching news stories from across the world which he believes will be of interest to his readers and stories which he believes are likely to impact his readers in some way.

Poor Richard doesn't worry about what other local online news sites are doing.  He doesn't waste anytime at all tracking what they are doing or trying to emulate their approach to news gathering and reporting.  Instead he stays focused on his own unique and highly successful news publishing formula.  And he works hard to find news stories that will be of interest to his readers.  Readers can go to one news website and find most of the important news stories of the day.

When I interviewed Poor Richard today, he told me:  "I just stay focused on the continuous improvement of my news site.   I seek input from my readers, and listen carefully to what they tell me. If there is something I can do to improve the format of my website, I do it immediately.  If there is something I can do to improve the quality and value of the news contenton my website, I do that.  I am here to SERVE my readers.  As Dr. W. Edwards Deming said ..... "So simple!"  I just focus on quality and continuous improvement!"

I've been watching Poor Richard for several months now.  I don't think he will be "poor" much longer!

Editorial Comment: The Abnormal Psychology of Angry "Crank" Commenters

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, Editor

Date:  1/30/2011
Post:  1,599

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia .....

"Crank" is a pejorative term used for a person who unshakably holds a belief that most of his or her contemporaries consider to be false.  A "cranky" belief is so wildly at variance with commonly accepted belief as to be ludicrous. Cranks characteristically dismiss all evidence or arguments which contradict their own unconventional beliefs, making rational debate an often futile task.

Common synonyms for "crank" include crackpot and kook. A crank differs from a fanatic in that the subject of the fanatic's obsession is either not necessarily widely regarded as wrong or not necessarily a "fringe" belief. Similarly, the word quack is reserved for someone who promotes a medical remedy or practice that is widely considered to be ineffective; this term however does not imply any deep belief in the idea or product they are attempting to sell. Crank may also refer to an ill-tempered individual or one who is in a bad mood.

The second book of the philosopher and popular author Martin Gardner was a study of crank beliefs, Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science. More recently, the mathematician Underwood Dudley has written a series of books on mathematical cranks, including The Trisectors, Mathematical Cranks, and Numerology: Or, What Pythagoras Wrought. And in a 1992 UseNet post, the mathematician John Baez humorously proposed a "checklist", the Crackpot index, intended to "diagnose" cranky beliefs regarding contemporary physics.

According to these authors, virtually universal characteristics of cranks include:
  1. Cranks overestimate their own knowledge and ability, and underestimate that of acknowledged experts.
  2. Cranks insist that their alleged discoveries are urgently important.
  3. Cranks rarely, if ever, acknowledge any error, no matter how trivial.
  4. Cranks love to talk about their own beliefs, often in inappropriate social situations, but they tend to be bad listeners, and often appear to be uninterested in anyone else's experience or opinions.
I have found the Wikipedia information about "cranks" to be most helpful.  Sometimes we get "cranky" commenters here at Hermann Hearsay.  It's not that often, but it does happen from time to time.  When it does happen, it can be most discouraging to my junior staff writers.  Many times, I have had to step in to address the "cranky" commenter myself.  When I do, it has not always gone well even though I have tried to be polite and civil with the complaining person.

It seems to me that cranks have no interest in learning about the subject or person which they harshly criticize.  They simply have no respect for listening to a differing point of view.

They will not read books (or any other kind of written material) on the topic they argue.  To do so would require them to expend some time and energy.  They will not talk to the individual they criticize and smear in an effort to learn his/her side of the story. Their motivation is only to speak (most often loudly) and be heard.

When cranks get into a defensive mode, I think it helps them more in the long run to be ignored.  I am currently ignoring one such crank who has come to this site repeatedly to accuse an innocent man of wrongdoing.  This crank no longer cares whether or not he has his facts correct.  He simply seeks to maliciously smear an innocent man and use the good name of Hermann Hearsay to help him do it.  That's why I am ignoring him!

Hermann Hearsay does not tolerate angry cranks, and we will NEVER allow them to use our blog site to publish and amplify maliciously false accusations about innocent people.

The longer debates with cranks rage on in the Comment Section of our blog site the more likely it is for the crank to write or imply any one or more of the following:
  1. They are a genius on the matter under debate, a genius on the scale of Albert Einstein.
  2. My staff writers who've researched the topic they have written about or the matter which the crank raises in a comment  are ignorant and don't have the gift of seeing the "real" truth and are unwilling to perform investigative due diligence.
  3. My staff writers and I are or ought be afraid of them for some reason or another.
  4. They (and others) are watching me and my writers, implying that we should be concerned for our own physical safety.
  5. And so on to include cursing, threats and intimidation of every kind imaginable.
Obviously, the more they say stuff like this the less likely they are to have an "oops, I was wrong" moment.  Consequently, I think elongated debates reinforce their resistance to being educated in the facts of the matter which they haven choosen to argue.

Thus, it often seems that the only choice which I am left with is to just ignore them.

Editorial Comment: Poor Richard's HermannMoNews Website Going Viral!

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, Editor

Date:  1/27/2011
Post:  1,574

I am proud to recognize the huge success which HermannMoNews is enjoying under the direction of Poor Richard!  In less than only four (4) months of publication, HermannMoNews has grown quickly to rival other local websites in terms of its readership, total page views per month and the number readers around the globe who are managing to find Poor Richard's news articles.

Poor Richard has used his considerable skills as a researcher and practical knowledge of computers and the internet to bring us a content-rich local website which consolidates local news with world-wide news of local interest.  Poor Richard is a bit embarrassed for me to say this, but I think he is building the "Drudge Report of Hermann".

There is no ad clutter and no exaggerated self-promotion on Poor Richard's website!  Just a large dose of nteresting news content!

Poor Richard and I have discussed the possibility of collaborating together in the future on some exciting joint projects involving leading-edge techology.  One of the projects which really excites us is our idea for bringing 3-D to our websites!  Neither of us has ever charged our readers a subscriber fee.  We both believe that news information should be FREE to all citizens.  But with the new 3-D technology, we may have to charge a fee to cover our fixed investment costs and our variable costs for 3-D glasses.

If you haven't already checked out Poor Richard's website, you absolutely must visit HermannMoNews (click here) soon!  I promise you that you will be thanking me for introducing you to Poor Richard!

Editorial Comment: Dealing With Snakes

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, Editor

Date:  1/26/2011
Post:  1,561

"If you spend enough time around snakes, they will eventually bite you.  Therefore it is best to avoid them altogether."  ~ Dick Schaefer

With this advice in mind, our editorial board has decided to limit response to anonymous commenters and commenters with fictitious names who come onto this site with the obvious intention of attacking our writers and/or attacking innocent citizens of our community.

Henceforth our new policy will be to respond to any snakes who slither onto our site in the following way:

WARNING - Slither onto some other website.  You are not welcome at Hermann Hearsay.  We do not like snakes and our regular readers do not like snakes.

After an initial recognition of and written warning to such snakes, our staff writers will simply ignore their presence.  If we deem snakes to be a continuing annoyance, we will shoot them.  I'm sorry that sounds a bit violent.  Actually, we will just SPAM them, so they can no longer slither back onto our site.

Editorial Comment: Open Letter to "Joe Citizen"

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

Date:  1/25/2011
Post:  1,549

At about 1:50 pm on Monday, 1/24, we received a "comment" in response to an article published by our staff writer Dick Schaefer on 1/17/2011.  Dick's article may be found by clicking on "Commissioner Lairmore Slams Struggling Unemployed".

Normally it is the practice of Hermann Hearsay to address all comments under the posted article where they are received.  Normally the staff writer who publishes the story answers all comments received.  This particular comment, however, deserves our special attention and treatment.  It deserves special treatment, because this is the first time in 1,549 postings since we first began back on 7/5/2009 that we cannot responsibly and in good conscience publish a comment from one of our readers.  Because of this it falls to me to provide an answer as to why this comment will not be published.

The comment came into us from one "Joe Citizen".  While we cannot be absolutely certain, we believe this to be a fictitious name.  Joe's comment accused an upstanding Hermann citizen of financial wrongdoing.  Specifically, Joe accused an upstanding Hermann citizen of having committed fraud against the State of Missouri.  Joe's allegation is very, very serious and hence deserves special treatment by the Editor of Hermann Hearsay.  That's me, Joe.

Joe, the reasons we are refusing to publish your comment are these:
  1. Your allegation against an upstanding Hermann citizen is baseless, unfounded, unproven, malicious and libelous.  Other than that it contained no spelling errors and just a few grammatical errors.  Joe, you dumbass, we don't repeat and amplify angry lies here on Hermann Hearsay
  2. Your allegation was general in nature.  You did not provide details about:  (a) the time period during which the alleged wrongdoing took place, (b) the exact amount of money involved, nor (c) the source of your information.  Because of this lack of specificity, we believe you don't know what the hell you're talking about.  If you want to make such an allegation, come to us with more specifics.  Prove what you are saying, Joe ..... or crawl back into the dark hole from which you have emerged.
  3. We can't prove it ... yet, but we think we know who you are.  We think you have a personal grudge against the person you are accusing.  Joe, we think you are a spineless, gutless worm who hides behind a fictitious name in order to spread your angry lies.  Joe, we think you and your associates will be outed in the due course of time.
Man up, Joe!  We doubt that you are capable of that.  But if you do have the proof, the exact amount of money wrongfully taken from the State of Missouri and a credible source for your information, then bring it!  We doubt that you do have proof!  We think you are just an angry, spineless, vindictive little coward who is making wild accusations against a person who is much more credible and reputable than yourself!

Joe, you now have the distinction of being the FIRST commenter to have his comment rejected by Hermann Hearsay.  To what mailing address shall I send your "Certificate of Award".

Editorial Comment: Hermann Candidate For Ward 2 Alderman Speaks Out On Issues

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

Patrick Layton Paulsen is a GREAT AMERICAN!  Although Pat ran unsuccessfully for President several times in the 60s and 70s, we still support the strong stand he took then and still takes on the issues of concern to all Americans.  Now, four decades later, Hermann Hearsay is supporting and endorsing Pat Paulsen in his bid to unseat incumbent Brian Chorley as Ward 2 Alderman of Hermann.

Paulsen has all the qualifications necessary to do a fine job for the people of Hermann.  Paulsen has no court record (that we can find) on http://www.case.net/.  I suppose it is possible that Mr. Paulsen, being a very shrewd and well-connected politician, has managed to have his court records expunged.  Mr. Paulsen is a wise man, and we have never known him to intentionally lie.  He does drink a little bit, but we are willing to overlook this one and ONLY character flaw!

Here is a tape of Pat Paulsen stating his position on three big national issues four decades ago.  Pat appeared on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1967 and 1968, providing his editorial comments regarding Social Security, gun control and healthcare.  Pat's views haven't changed one bit since that time!

VOTE PAT PAULSEN FOR WARD 2 ALDERMAN OF HERMANN!  IF PAT CAN HANDLE THE BIG NATIONAL ISSUES, HE CAN CERTAINLY DEALWITH OUR POT HOLES AND BROKEN SEWER LINES!

Editorial Comment: Hermann Hearsay endorses whoever challenges incumbent Ward 2 Alderman, Brian Chorley.

Hermann Hearsay has decided to endorse whoever files against Brian Chorley for Ward 2 alderman in Hermann.  The filing deadline is January 18.  We are hopeful that some qualified resident of Ward 2 will step forward and offer their service before the filing deadline.

After close consultation with several Hermann residents whose judgment we trust, we feel we cannot endorse the incumbent.

Editorial Comment: Publisher Of Local Online "News" Site Takes Another Gratuitous Swipe At Northern District Associate Commissioner Matt Penning

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

Date:  12/30/2010
Post:  1,373

Jeff Noedel, Publisher of CountyNewsLIVE.com, has once again taken a gratuitous swipe at Northern District Associate Commissioner Matt Penning.  Embedded within a "news" article about Gasconade County's swearing in ceremony today, Mr. Noedel took another cheap shot at Commissioner Penning by observing as follows:

"Associate Commissioner Matt Penning (north district) and county surveyor Paul Dopuch were not present."

Noedel writes a statement like this without bothering to investigate the reason for Commissioner Penning's absence.  Noedel allows his readers to draw the conclusion which Noedel wants them to draw which is a negative conclusion.

I know the reason for Commissioner Penning's absence today.  If Noedel had done the follow-up work he should be doing as a "news reporter", he would know the reason too.  Commissioner Penning will likely NOT contact Noedel to tell him the reason he missed the swearing in ceremony, and that's because Noedel has consistently made every effort to throw Penning "under the bus" in just about every article he has ever written about the Gasconade County Commission.  If Noedel wants to know why Penning has stopped granting him interviews, he need only look in the mirror.  Noedel has never and will never give Penning a fair shake.

A resident of Hermann (who shall remain unnamed by this reporter) made a comment on the CNL website.  This resident was understandably misled by Noedel, and her comment reflected the fact that she had not sought to learn the "other side of the story".  I understand that she has been contacted by Commissioner Penning and has been told the reason for his absence.  I am waiting to see whether this woman will make another comment on CNL retracting her initial hasty comment.  At this juncture, I am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and presume that she will comment further now that she knows the TRUTH.

I am not going to report what Commissioner Penning was doing today.  Suffice it to say that it involved a generous act of human kindness.  Commissioner Penning was a Good Samaritan today by helping another human being who is suffering through a serious medical condition and his wife who is struggling to keep everything going at their home.  I am proud to call Matt Penning my friend.  And I am also proud to be represented by Matt Penning on the Gasconade County Commission.

As for Jeff Noedel ..... he is a disruptive influence in our small community.  Jeff Noedel is a sniveling muckraker and excrement agitator!  Jeff Noedel holds petty grudges and misuses his so-called "news" website to intentionally mischaracterize the motives, intents and objectives of certain individuals with whom he disagrees, and in the case of Commissioner Penning, an individual in county government who will no longer grant him access for interviews.

Mr. Noedel, you have burnt and you are burning many bridges in the Hermann community.  It's time for you to move on.  I encourage you to fold up your laptop, put your camera in its case, shutdown your  cellphone and move along to some other community.  Hermann does not need a person like you who intentionally misrepresents the news in order to stir up controversy for your own commercial self interest!  Hermann will do just fine with Don Kruse, a real journalist, and The Hermann Advertiser-Courier, a legitimate news publication!

Why pay for information when you can conveniently receive it for FREE? Why pay some lazy, middleman publisher of what increasingly amounts to just an online "ad sheet" to "re-package" the news and other information you can get elsewhere for FREE?

Here's a case in point ..... Why jump around all over the internet from one online source to another to find the local, state, national and international news that is of interest to you? Why spend all that time and energy when Poor Richard 2011 of HermannMoNews has already done that for you.  Poor Richard 2011 updates his site with 10 - 20 current news stories each and everyday.  He finds interesting news articles that I would never find.  I consider HermannMoNews the 'Drudge Report' of Hermann.  PR2011 provides news FREE at his website: http://www.HermannMoNews.blogspot.com.

In addition to being a FREE news site, HermannMoNews does not require any registration in order for you to leave comments.  Leave comments identifying your true name, or leave comments "anonymously", or leave NO comments at all.  It's entirely your choice!  Your personal information is always protected.  Since Poor Richard 2011 collects NO personal information regarding your name, address or email address, he obviously cannot sell it to third parties as some website operators do!

In 2011, save yourself some money and get the FREE information you want from FREE sources. We will suggest other money-saving tips in the next several days leading up to the New Year. Be sure to come back to Hermann Hearsay. Afterall, our service is FREE, leaving you more money in your pocket for Christmas gifts and a gala New Year's celebration!

Here's a case in point .....  Are you aware that you can obtain up-to-the-minute information regarding obituaries from Toedtmann and Grosse Funeral Home, Hermann's family owned funeral home?  That's right!  They provide timely obituary information FREE at their website:  http://www.toedtmanngrosse.com

You can even do as I have done and register for their FREE email notifications so that you receive immediate notification from them on all local obituaries.  Want to follow the same information in some other town or city?  Then just go to the website of the local funeral home(s) from your town or city of interest and register for the same notification service.

Editorial Comment: "Give us your tired, your bullied, bloodied and browbeaten, Your huddled masses yearning to express viewpoints freely"

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

Apparently we have once again "hit a nerve"!  Yesterday's "Quote Of The Day" posting mocked Hank Vonk's 12/6 "Letter to the Editor" over at online "news" website CNL.  We received a number of comments from disaffected CNL subscribers who are tired of being "relentlessly bullied" by the "Hanksta" aka "The Bully From The South"

One of our own staff members, himself a past CNL reader and commenter, can relate to this.  Dick Schaefer, one of our contributing writers and investigative bloggers, often had trouble getting his comments posted by the publisher of CNL.  He butted heads with publisher Jeff Noedel on numerous occasions.  Schaefer can relate to those who have experienced the "relentless brow-beating and bullying" of Hank Vonk aka Luckyrider when he was able to get his "unpopular" viewpoints published as comments on CNL.

And now we see that others are openly complaining about Hank Vonk and CNL.  For your convenience, you may click on this link to go back and re-read yesterday's "Quote Of The Day" along with comments from our readers:  http://hermannhearsay.blogspot.com/2010/12/quote-of-day-monday-1262010.html.

To all disaffected, unappreciated, disrespected, over-charged, browbeaten CNL paid subscribers, Hermann Hearsay makes this open invitation to all of you:

"Give us your tired, your bullied, bloodied and browbeaten,

Your huddled masses yearning to express viewpoints freely,

The wretched refuse of your over-priced "news" website.

Send these, your disrespected and unappreciated, to us;

We lift our lamps beside the open door of FREE speech!"

Hermann Hearsay ..... a friendly site for  FREE thinkers, FREE subscriptions and FREE speech!

Editorial Comment: Hermann Hearsay's Comment Policy

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

Since Hermann Hearsay's start-up, we have have employed a very liberal comment policy.  We have posted nearly 1,100 articles since our start-up, and we have yet to MODERATE or BAN a single post from our readers due to content or tone.  The only reasons that we would MODERATE or BAN a comment would be if the comment contained profane language or if the comment libeled a private person.

We allow all political views, and we allow our readers to voice their opinions and viewpoints about the job performance of elected public officials.  I have experienced political censorship on another local website myself, and I know others who have also experienced censorship.  At Hermann Hearsay, you can disagree with us, and we will not hold that against you.  We will keep publishing your comments.  We are entitled to our viewpoints which we freely publish on this site .... AND you are also entitled to your viewpoints!  We need to encourage people to express their personal viewpoints in America.  We need more vigorous political debate in America ..... NOT LESS!

We allow our readers to use their real names, fictitious usernames or to just comment "anonymously".  Another local news website takes the view that commenters who use fictitious usernames or who comment anonymously are necessarily more rude and uncivil to other readers than the commenters who use their real names.  We have not found this to be the case thus far on our website.  I believe we attract reasonable and intelligent readers.  We're interested in everything they have to say.  Some are uneasy discussing sensitive topics like politics, religion and public policy if they have to register using their real names.  For example, a local businessman may not be as forthcoming about his political views if he fears losing the business of those who may take an opposite view.  I understand this.  That's why we make it possible for all readers to make comments without the fear of economic reprisal.

Bottomline .... Our comment policy is liberal, and we will keep it that way to encourage free and open discussion.

If you disagree with us, let us know how you see it.  Let us know if you think we're missing something!

Editorial Comment: Stories which Hermann Hearsay will never cover!

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

The editorial board here at Hermann Hearsay has a long-standing policy that there are certain stories which we will NEVER publish.  Recent coverage of these types of stories by another online news agency has convinced us that we have been correct in our conservative editorial policy.  We affirmed our policy in our Saturday morning policy meeting this past week.

We will NEVER EVER stoop so low as to cover any of the following sensational, voyeuristic and privacy invasive stories:
  1. motor vehicle wrecks and collisions where mangled and blood-stained vehicles are photographed wrapped around a tree or wrapped around another vehicle while the occupant(s) has/have been transported to either the hospital or to the morgue,
  2. single-family and multiple-family dwelling fires where homes and apartments are photographed or video-tape recorded while they are engulfed in flames and the occupants stand helplessly by shivering in the cold night air, and
  3. funerals and grave site burial services where bereaved family members and friends are photographed or video-tape recorded during what should rightfully be their personal and private moments of overwhelming grief.
This type of "news coverage" is OBSCENE.  We will NEVER seek to profit from the misery and personal suffering of other human beings.  Yes, these types of stories might attract a few extra readers seeking to satisfy their morbid and voyeuristic curiosity, but we choose not to be in the business of publishing that kind of heartless, graphic and sensational material.

Additionally, we have taken the editorial position that we will take the moral high ground and denounce publishers who engage is such obscene "news reporting".  Local news media organizations much self-regulate the entire industry.  In this vein, we call upon CNL (CountyNewsLIVE.com) to cease and desist from this type of sensational and obscene reporting.  If this type of reporting does not cease at CNL, we promise that we will take it upon ourselves to make them quite famous within the local community for their tasteless coverage of such stories.

For reference, here are the most recent examples of sensational reporting:
  1. Wednesday, 11/3 CNL posting:  http://countynewslive.com/content/2010/nov/03/young-driver-swerves-miss-dog-gellert-st-loses-control-and-hits-tree
