I appreciate the sound of a slide trombone ..... that is when the guy playing it can play it really, really well!  You see, I grew up playing a slide trombone in grade school, high school and then in a dance orchestra.  Unfortunately and regrettably, I never sufficiently applied myself in order to be able to play the instrument the way it is meant to be played.

But Urbie Green did!  Here is Urbie Green playing "You Are So Beautiful" on the slide trombone.  I hope you appreciate Urbie's talent as much as I do!

Question:

What goes through the door without pinching itself?

What sits on the stove without burning itself?

What sits on the table and is not ashamed?

Song Of The Day - "Mama's Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys" by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson - Wednesday, 2/9/2011

Waylon Arnold Jennings (June 15, 1937 - February 13, 2002) was an influential American country music singer and musician.

A series of duet albums with Willie Nelson in the late 1970s culminated in the 1978 crossover hit, "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys".

Willie Hugh Nelson (born April 30, 1933) is an American country singer-songwriter, author, poet and actor

Along with Nelson, Waylon Jennings was also achieving success in country music in the early 1970s, and the pair were soon combined into a genre called outlaw country ("outlaw" because it did not conform to Nashville standards).

"Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys" is a country music song written by Ed Bruce and Patsy Bruce. It was made famous by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, whose version was first released on their 1978 album Waylon & Willie. The song's lyrics advise mothers to raise their children as doctors or lawyers rather than cowboys, who seem to be "always alone."

The Waylon & Willie version peaked at No. 1 in March 1978, spending four weeks atop the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart.

Lyrics:

Cowboys ain't easy to love and they're harder to hold
And they'd rather give you a song then diamonds or gold
Lonestar belt buckles and old faded Levi's each night begins a new day
And if you don't understand him and he don't die young
He'll probably just ride away

Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
Don't let 'em pick guitars and drive them old trucks
Make 'em be doctors and lawyers and such

Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
They'll never stay home and they're always alone
Even with someone they love

Cowboys like smokey old pool rooms and clear mountian mornings
Little warm puppies and children and girls of the night
And them that don't know him won't like him
And them that do sometimes won't know how to take him
He ain't wrong he's just different
but his pride won't let him do things to make you think he's right

Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
Don't let 'em pick guitars and drive them old trucks
Make 'em be doctors and lawyers and such

Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
They'll never stay home and they're always alone
Even with someone they love

Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys

"The head of Homeland Security told people at the game, if they saw anything not right give them a call. They got 50 million calls as soon as Christina Aguilera started singing the National Anthem. The good news, you can’t accuse her of lip syncing."  ~ Jay Leno (2/7/2011)

Take the Big 12's highest-scoring teams, add in the fact that they are bitter border rivals, put them on national television with a chance to shine and what do you get?

Lots of offense and not much defense in #2 Kansas' 103-86 victory over #19 Missouri on ESPN's Big Monday.

"I don't know if there was a lot of defense played, but a lot of scoring took place."  ~ Missouri coach Mike Anderson

The Jayhawks (23-1, 8-1) started the game leading the nation in field goal percentage at 52 percent. On Monday, they shot at a 61 percent clip, which they needed to, because Missouri (18-6, 4-5) hit a hot 52 percent.

Bible Verse Of The Day - Colossians 2:9-10 - Wednesday, 2/7/2011

For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. – Colossians 2:9-10

In this powerful verse, Paul sums up the most controversial aspect of Jesus Christ’s life – that He was the true God. The Greek world believed in demigods, or heroic men who achieved divine status. But Paul states that Jesus upstaged them all. Jesus did not become a god; He was God. The Colossian believers didn’t need to look anywhere else, for God’s fullest and final statement IS Jesus Christ. But Paul doesn’t stop there. We now have that fullness in Christ. If you understand who Jesus is and have given your life to follow Him, you don’t need to look anywhere else. When you are under King Jesus, you are under the supreme authority of the universe. Stop and acknowledge His Lordship over your life today!
