A Nation Of Thieves

Changing America

Dr. Thomas Sowell, in "Dismantling America," said in reference to President Obama, "That such an administration could be elected in the first place, headed by a man whose only qualifications to be president of the United States at a dangerous time in the history of the world were rhetoric, style and symbolism -- and whose animus against the values and institutions of America had been demonstrated repeatedly over a period of decades beforehand -- speaks volumes about the inadequacies of our educational system and the degeneration of our culture."
Obama is by no means unique; his characteristics are shared by other Americans, but what is unique is that no other time in our history would such a person been elected president. That says a lot about the degeneration of our culture, values, thinking abilities and acceptance of what's no less than tyranny. As Sowell says, "Barack Obama is unlike any other President of the United States in having come from a background of decades of associations and alliances with people who resent this country and its people." In 2008, Americans voted for Obama's change. Let's look at some of it.
Obama's Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius threatened that there would be "zero tolerance" for "misinformation" in response to an insurance company executive who said that ObamaCare would create costs that force up health insurance premiums. That's not only an attack on our constitutionally guaranteed free speech rights but an official threat against people who express views damaging to the administration.
Not to be outdone by his HHS secretary's attack on free speech, Obama wants full disclosure of the names of people who were backers of campaign commercials critical of his administration, saying that there has been a "flood of deceptive attack ads sponsored by special interests, using front groups with misleading names." Disclosure would leave administration critics open to government and mob retaliation.
Obama and his congressional and union allies have lectured us that socialized medicine is the cure for the nation's ills, but I have a question. If socialized medicine, Obamacare, is so great for the nation, why permit anyone to be exempted from it? It turns out that as of the end of November, Obama's Health and Human Services secretary has issued over 200 waivers to major labor unions such as the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union and Transport Workers Union of America and major companies such as McDonald's and Darden Restaurants, which operates Red Lobster and Olive Garden. Keep in mind that the power to grant waivers is also the power not to grant waivers. Such power can be used to reward administration friends and punish administration critics by saddling them with millions of dollars of health care costs.
Obama's heath care legislation contains deviousness that has become all too common in Washington. What was sold to the American people as health care reform legislation includes a provision that would more heavily regulate and tax gold coin and bullion transactions. Whether gold and bullion transactions should or should not be more heavily regulated and taxed is not the issue. The administration's devious inclusion of it as a part of health care reform is.
Fighting government intrusion into our lives is becoming increasingly difficult for at least two reasons. The first reason is that educators at the primary, secondary and university levels have been successful in teaching our youngsters to despise the values of our Constitution and the founders of our nation -- "those dead, old, racist white men." Their success in that arena might explain why educators have been unable to get our youngsters to read, write and compute on a level comparable with other developed nations; they are too busy proselytizing students.
The second reason is we've become a nation of thieves, accustomed to living at the expense of one another and to accommodate that we're obliged to support tyrannical and overreaching government.
Adolf Hitler had it right when he said, "How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think."

It has been said that as we get older the years get shorter and the days get longer! Life can often feel like a race that we are running and can’t quite keep up. Placing our hope in the Lord and the new life that he offers us in Christ is compared here to soaring on wings like eagles-like flying. Imagine it, no longer are we destined to place our hope in ourselves, our jobs, the economy, our friends or a spouse. We now have a hope that cannot be shaken. When our hope is in the Lord our strength is renewed. Whatever you are facing today you have a choice. Where will you put your hope?

This kind of analyis is not presented to the masses by the national media. Why? Are they afraid the American people can't understand the information? Or maybe the problem is that reporters for the national media don't understand the information well enough to present it to us.

Tax Cuts Clearly Explained

If you go to the White House website, right at the top is a bar you can click on to see "Tax Cuts Clearly Explained." If you click, you see a video of one of President Obama's economic advisors using a whiteboard to explain that Republicans are bad, that Obama is above politics, and that if Obama gets his way, jobs and growth and goodness will spring forth.
The video starts out simply enough. Republicans want to extend the Bush tax rates for everyone; Obama wants to leave out the top 2% of income earners. It was all about the Bush tax rates and for how long, and to whom, to extend them.
But then the video starts talking about a host of things unrelated to those tax rates. The economist even lists them on his whiteboard.
Since Congress got into the compromise act, tax credits for ethanol, alternative fuels, and who knows what else have also been added.
In the spirit of clarity, what follows is my attempt to explain tax cuts.
The Republican position was to keep tax rates where they are now and where they've been since 2003.
Republicans would have compromised by simply extending the current rates for two years instead of permanently. Obama saw that bet and raised unemployment insurance, earned income tax credit, American opportunity tax credit, child tax credit, payroll tax, and investment incentives. Congressional Democrats saw that bet and raised it ethanol and alternative fuels subsidies.
This is all about the Democrats rewarding their interest groups and blaming the certain deficit on Republicans. As usual, the Stupid Party will see that bet, holding a pair of deuces.
I'll try to clarify it with another analogy. A 700-pound man goes to the doctor. The doctor says the man needs to diet, and in fact prescribes a certain salad as the man's meal for the next few months. This kind of analyis is not presented to the masses by the national media. Why? Are they afraid the American people can't understand the information? Or maybe the problem is that reporters for the national media don't understand the information well enough to present it to us.

Tax Cuts Clearly Explained

If you go to the White House website, right at the top is a bar you can click on to see "Tax Cuts Clearly Explained." If you click, you see a video of one of President Obama's economic advisors using a whiteboard to explain that Republicans are bad, that Obama is above politics, and that if Obama gets his way, jobs and growth and goodness will spring forth.
The video starts out simply enough. Republicans want to extend the Bush tax rates for everyone; Obama wants to leave out the top 2% of income earners. It was all about the Bush tax rates and for how long, and to whom, to extend them.
But then the video starts talking about a host of things unrelated to those tax rates. The economist even lists them on his whiteboard.
- Unemployment insurance,
- Earned income tax credit,
- American opportunity tax credit,
- Child tax credit,
- Payroll tax,
- Investment incentives.
Since Congress got into the compromise act, tax credits for ethanol, alternative fuels, and who knows what else have also been added.
In the spirit of clarity, what follows is my attempt to explain tax cuts.
The Republican position was to keep tax rates where they are now and where they've been since 2003.
- Democrats fought to keep the Bush tax rates only for those making less than $250,000 in a year. That is curious, since they've been saying for about ten years that the "Bush tax cuts" went only to the wealthiest Americans. Democrats are arguing to keep something they said never existed.
- According to the Congressional Budget Office, the entire package, as currently proposed in the Senate, would add $858 billion to the 2011-2020 deficit. Without it, the 2011-2020 deficit would be $6,246 B. So this package theoretically increases the ten-year deficit by 14%.
- Of that $858 B, about $544 B comes from keeping current tax rates; the rest comes from the new goodies unrelated to the Bush rates. So because Democrats said some part of that $544 B adds too much to the deficit, they added another $314 B to the deficit. That is how compromise and "the middle way" work in Washington .
- The CBO calculates future revenues under the assumption that tax rates have zero effect on the behavior of investors, consumers, employers, etc. Congress forces the CBO to make that assumption. Every economist this side of Paul Krugman knows that that assumption is wrong. One such economist is Christina Romer, President Obama's first choice as chief of his economic advisors. She said a tax increase of 1% of GDP reduces GDP by about 1.84%. And she said that this year in a published, peer-reviewed academic paper.
- Another top economic adviser to President Obama, Larry Summers, was more direct. "If they do not pass this [tax cut agreement] in the next couple of weeks, it will materially increase the risk of the economy stalling out and that we would have a double-dip [recession]." Bill Clinton advised that passing the tax cuts would "minimize the chances that it [the economy] will slip back [into recession]." Again, top Democrats say we must keep the Bush tax rates or the recession resumes.
- President Obama's view is that not keeping the Bush tax rates on those making under $250,000 "would be a grave injustice" and "would deal a serious blow to our economic recovery." Again, this is curious because Democrats keep saying that Bush's tax cuts went only to the wealthiest Americans and caused all the harm we now see to the economy. But apparently, not continuing the Bush policy for 98% of taxpayers would be a "serious blow" to the economy.
- President Obama believes that keeping the current tax rates for those making over $250,000 in a year "would cost us $700 billion" and do "very little to actually grow our economy." He assures us that "economists from all across the political spectrum agree" on that. I believed he polled the same economists who said his stimulus would keep the unemployment rate below 8%.
- As a matter of record, the final Bush tax rates passed Congress in mid-2003, shortly after Republicans retook the Senate. From August 2003 to December 2007, over eight million net new jobs were created, and real GDP grew almost 3% per year. At that same time, federal revenues increased by 2.3% of GDP ($785 B), putting revenues above the average level of 1960-2000, the forty years before Bush. Unemployment fell to 4.4%, and the deficit fell to 1.2% of GDP. Such was the catastrophe of four years of Bush's tax rates and Republican-written federal budgets.
- You will hear that this or that group (the top 2%, those who inherit dad's farm, etc.) does not "deserve" to have its taxes kept at the current rate. There are only two alternatives for where that money goes: the family that earned it, or the government. If the family doesn't "deserve" it, does the government?
Republicans would have compromised by simply extending the current rates for two years instead of permanently. Obama saw that bet and raised unemployment insurance, earned income tax credit, American opportunity tax credit, child tax credit, payroll tax, and investment incentives. Congressional Democrats saw that bet and raised it ethanol and alternative fuels subsidies.
This is all about the Democrats rewarding their interest groups and blaming the certain deficit on Republicans. As usual, the Stupid Party will see that bet, holding a pair of deuces.
I'll try to clarify it with another analogy. A 700-pound man goes to the doctor. The doctor says the man needs to diet, and in fact prescribes a certain salad as the man's meal for the next few months. Jeff Noedel, Publisher of CountyNewsLIVE.com, has once again taken a gratuitous swipe at Northern District Associate Commissioner Matt Penning. Embedded within a "news" article about Gasconade County's swearing in ceremony today, Mr. Noedel took another cheap shot at Commissioner Penning by observing as follows:
"Associate Commissioner Matt Penning (north district) and county surveyor Paul Dopuch were not present."
Noedel writes a statement like this without bothering to investigate the reason for Commissioner Penning's absence. Noedel allows his readers to draw the conclusion which Noedel wants them to draw which is a negative conclusion.
I know the reason for Commissioner Penning's absence today. If Noedel had done the follow-up work he should be doing as a "news reporter", he would know the reason too. Commissioner Penning will likely NOT contact Noedel to tell him the reason he missed the swearing in ceremony, and that's because Noedel has consistently made every effort to throw Penning "under the bus" in just about every article he has ever written about the Gasconade County Commission. If Noedel wants to know why Penning has stopped granting him interviews, he need only look in the mirror. Noedel has never and will never give Penning a fair shake.
A resident of Hermann (who shall remain unnamed by this reporter) made a comment on the CNL website. This resident was understandably misled by Noedel, and her comment reflected the fact that she had not sought to learn the "other side of the story". I understand that she has been contacted by Commissioner Penning and has been told the reason for his absence. I am waiting to see whether this woman will make another comment on CNL retracting her initial hasty comment. At this juncture, I am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and presume that she will comment further now that she knows the TRUTH.
I am not going to report what Commissioner Penning was doing today. Suffice it to say that it involved a generous act of human kindness. Commissioner Penning was a Good Samaritan today by helping another human being who is suffering through a serious medical condition and his wife who is struggling to keep everything going at their home. I am proud to call Matt Penning my friend. And I am also proud to be represented by Matt Penning on the Gasconade County Commission.
As for Jeff Noedel ..... he is a disruptive influence in our small community. Jeff Noedel is a sniveling muckraker and excrement agitator! Jeff Noedel holds petty grudges and misuses his so-called "news" website to intentionally mischaracterize the motives, intents and objectives of certain individuals with whom he disagrees, and in the case of Commissioner Penning, an individual in county government who will no longer grant him access for interviews.
Mr. Noedel, you have burnt and you are burning many bridges in the Hermann community. It's time for you to move on. I encourage you to fold up your laptop, put your camera in its case, shutdown your cellphone and move along to some other community. Hermann does not need a person like you who intentionally misrepresents the news in order to stir up controversy for your own commercial self interest! Hermann will do just fine with Don Kruse, a real journalist, and The Hermann Advertiser-Courier, a legitimate news publication!

The significance of a child being born from a virgin cannot escape us as we see this passage in Genesis. From the very beginning we see a battle set between this offspring of a woman and Satan. Though Christ was struck in the heel at Calvary, he crushed the head of the power of sin and death at the resurrection. Now the lion lies all of the time on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The unicorn always lies on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Alice asks the lion what day it is, he says, "Well, yesterday was one of my lying days." Alice can't figure it out just from the lion's answer so she asks the unicorn and the unicorn says, "Yesterday was also one of my lying days." What day is it?

"Auld Lang Syne" is the theme song from the 1940 movie "Waterloo Bridge".
"Waterloo Bridge" is a 1940 remake of the 1931 film of the same title.
The film was made by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, directed by Mervyn LeRoy and produced by Sidney Franklin and Mervyn LeRoy. The screenplay is by S. N. Behrman, Hans Rameau and George Froeschel, based on the Broadway drama by Robert E. Sherwood. The music is by Herbert Stothart and cinematography by Joseph Ruttenberg. The film stars Robert Taylor and Vivien Leigh, her first film after the success of "Gone with the Wind". MGM bought the 1931 version from Universal when they did this remake.
A simple tale of love gained and lost, the 1940 film "Waterloo Bridge" tells the story of a dancer and an officer who meet in a chance encounter on Waterloo Bridge. This initial encounter occurs during an air raid in World War I. But because of the Hays Code, which had not been in effect when the 1931 film version was made, the plot of the 1940 version had to be changed and somewhat sanitized. In the original play and film, Myra is an ordinary chorus girl of easy virtue, and Roy is too naive to realize this until near the end. In the 1940 version, Myra is a ballerina in a prestigious dance company, who descends into prostitution after mistakenly believing that Roy has been killed. In the first film, Myra is accidentally killed; in the 1940 version, she commits suicide in order not to involve Roy in a scandal.
"Waterloo Bridge" was a success at the box office and nominated for two Academy Awards — Best Music for Herbert Stothart and Best Cinematography. It was also considered a personal favourite by both Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor.
