I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. – John 17:14-15 (NIV)
We are given God’s word, but that word is to equip us to engage with the world around us. Notice that Jesus does not pray for our comfort, but safety as we deal with a world that will react to the foreign nature of the Scripture. So don’t be surprised at people’s reactions to the doctrines of hell, heaven, the cross, and Jesus divinity, but don’t be surprised at God’s protection as we live in the world but not of the world. This is Jesus prayer over our lives today.
