Bible Verse Of The Day - 2 Samuel 24:24 - Saturday, 5/21/2011

But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels of silver for them. – 2 Samuel 24:24 (NIV)
David understood something that many of us don’t see today: worship costs us something. David was responding to God’s judgment by building an altar on Araunah’s land, which would later become the site of Solomon’s temple. But instead of simply taking Araunah’s offer of free land, David insisted that he pay for it. Worship that is valuable to us will cost us time, money and energy. Don’t be a consumer and thus cheapen your worship of God. His glory demands our best. What can you offer to God today?

Bible Verse Of The Day - Numbers 11:27 - Friday, 5/20/2011

A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” – Numbers 11:27 (NIV)
There have always been people who want to contain the work of God. This young man thought that Moses would clamp down on these men who were moving in spiritual power. Instead, Moses gives them a very surprising answer: “I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put His spirit on them.” Instead of trying to quarantine the work of the Spirit, we would do well to encourage and release people as God is building a kingdom of priests unto Himself.

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. – Ephesians 1:17 (NIV)
Notice that knowing God is linked to the Spirit of wisdom and revelation. No matter how much we try to figure out God, the knowledge of God is not up to us – it has to be revealed. The apostle Paul was praying for a people who were basing their knowledge of God more upon His revelation and not their own. This is not a God formed in our image – we are formed in His image. When we see God as our glorious Father, we’ll move from information about God to worship, and in doing so, we will know Him better.

In those days, when your numbers have increased greatly in the land,” declares the LORD, “men will no longer say, ‘The ark of the covenant of the LORD.’ It will never enter their minds or be remembered; it will not be missed, nor will another one be made. – Jeremiah 3:16 (NIV)
At a time with the people of God were far from Him, the prophet Jeremiah corrects the Israelites over their memories of “the glory days”, when the ark of God was the sign that God was in their midst. Jeremiah was foretelling of a day when we would not need external reminders that God is among us. God did not need to replace the Ark of the Covenant because God Himself would come and set up His dwelling place among men. Jesus Christ now offers to bring His presence into our hearts. This has been God’s plan from the beginning.

Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.” – Exodus 19:5-6 (NIV)
Many people think of the Laws of Moses as repressive commandments. But this passage in Exodus tells us that God has always wanted a people for himself. In a sense, any relationship needs rules. The progression of a dating relationship to a marriage is when both parties become convinced that they can give themselves to each other because their views of life are compatible. Jesus came to bring God’s view of life to us and then He sent the Holy Spirit to transform our hearts to love those views. When hearts become soft toward God, we desire to become His people, His treasured possession. How about you? Do you see the laws of God as repressive or lovely? This is an indication of the condition of our heart.

Bible Verse Of The Day - Galatians 1:8 - Monday, 5/16/2011

But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! – Galatians 1:8 (NIV)
The word gospel literally means “good news”. As Paul is addressing the legalism of the Galatians he speaks of the many versions of “good news” that come to us. There’s the “good news” of career, which proclaim to us that if we just work hard enough we will be satisfied. The “good news” of family tell us that we will be fulfilled if we become better parents. But what seems to be good news is never enough. Paul tells us that the good news of Jesus Christ – that Jesus gives us peace and fulfillment with God – is the news that will liberate us from the idols of career or family, and that liberation will ultimately make us a better worker or parent. Anything that takes away from God’s work through Christ is a false gospel.

When those who were carrying the ark of the LORD had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. – 2 Samuel 6:13 (NIV)
Previously in this story, the Philistines had taken the Ark of the Lord, but after a series of bad things happened, they quickly decided to return the Ark to the Israelites. Instead of handling the Ark the way God had prescribed, David was rushing it back to the temple. This resulted in the death of one of his men. Once David realized his error, he returned to God’s orders of how the Ark was to be moved. Like David, we can try to rush the things of God in our lives in the name of pragmatism. But God doesn’t bless our attempts to cut corners. We are so interested in the destination that we fail to see that God is more interested in the journey.

Bible Verse Of The Day - Habakkuk 3:17-18 - Thursday, 5/5/2011

Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. – Habakkuk 3:17-18 (NIV)
The prophet Habakkuk had a hard job. A Jewish civil war had divided Israel and Judah into bickering neighbors. Then the Assyrians, who had conquered Judah, were declining as an empire and the Babylonians would rise as the next world power. Judah was being judged for her unfaithfulness to God and Habakkuk was wondering why the judgment seemed worse than the crime. Yet in the midst of this, Habakkuk praises God in the midst of circumstances that he does not understand. There are times when the best response that we can give is praise; the only option is to rejoice. Don’t let unresolved issues keep you from God’s presence, for there are many things that we will not understand this side of heaven.

But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. – Jude 1:20 (NIV)
Jude brings us to an important point: praying builds us up! However you define what praying in the Holy Spirit means, what is more important is that you use whatever definition you have and strengthen your holy faith. We may want to go to Christian conferences or retreats, but do we pray? And when we pray, does it build us up? May these questions haunt us all in a good way as we seek to release more of the Holy Spirit in and through our lives.

Teach me, O LORD, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart. – Psalm 119:33-34 (NIV)
When the Psalmist asks God to teach him how to follow God’s decrees, he gives us an important insight. It is one thing to learn the decrees, but another to follow them. In an age of quick and easy information, this passage challenges us to take as much care in applying God’s word to our day-to-day lives as we may take in learning it. The access to Biblical insight is plentiful, but the world needs to see Christians who apply those insights in a tangible way. Take a moment and think about things that you already know that need to become a reality today.

Bible Verse Of The Day - Philemon 1:15-16 - Monday, 5/2/2011

Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back for good- no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord. – Philemon 1:15-16 (NIV)
In a day when slavery was a major industry, Paul challenges Philemon to look at his slave, Onesimus, in a radical new way. Onesimus left as a slave, but Paul wants him to return as a brother. When one looks at Biblical teaching we find a message of freedom from bondage, of liberty from prisons, and the restoring of dignity. Don’t let the abuses of history blur the pure message of Scripture – we belong to Christ, and all of us are heirs to the promises of God.

The LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” – Exodus 4:11-12 (NIV)
When God commissioned Moses to free the Israelites from the clutches of Pharaoh, Moses could only see his deficiencies. He still doesn’t believe that God will give him the ability to speak. There is a big difference between the struggle of not knowing what to do and knowing exactly what to do, but not wanting to do it. If you see something that you KNOW you need to do, trust that the God who caused to you see the opportunity will also equip you to accomplish the task. Anything less is unbelief.

Bible Verse Of The Day - - Saturday, 4/30/2011

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” – Mark 1:35-37 (NIV)
One of the things that marked Jesus life was solitary prayer. The Scripture constantly records Jesus seeking after His heavenly Father. What about our lives? Do we give ourselves time to get away to petition God in prayer? Notice that Jesus was not driven by the desires of either his disciples or the crowds. In living this way, He gives us an example to recognize the difference between the things that seem urgent and the one thing that is of primary importance. Take some time and seek after your heavenly Father today.

Bible Verse Of The Day - Numbers 16:22 - Friday, 4/29/2011

But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, “O God, God of the spirits of all mankind, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?” – Numbers 16:22 (NIV)
This story has a message for all of us: sin is not an isolated event. Today people may say, “This doesn’t affect anyone else. What’s the big deal?” According the Scripture, sin affects everyone around you. God sees sin in community terms. We are the casualties and carriers of the sin of Adam and all who came after him. But God did not leave us in that state. That’s why He sent His Son, Jesus Christ. The cross of Christ is where God stopped the ongoing ripple effect of sin in our lives. Jesus took the anger of God upon Himself so that our sin and the sins of those around us can be forgiven and redeemed.

Bible Verse Of The Day - 1 Corinthians 15:21-22 - Thursday, 4/28/2011

For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. – 1 Corinthians 15:21-22 (NIV)
Western culture has been formed by our view of the individual. We talk of a personal Savior. But the Scripture challenges that assumption. From God’s point of view, what we do not only affects us, but everyone around us. Because of Adam’s disobedience, we all suffer under sin. Because of Christ’s obedience all can be made alive. So we need to see that our choices have far reaching implications. So choose today to follow Jesus. That choice has far greater implications than you know.
