Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. – 1 Timothy 6:18-19

When God the Father sent his only Son to earth on a rescue mission, he gave to us generously-the best that he had! We too are to live generous lives, being “rich in good deeds”. By sharing what God has given us for his glory, we can store away treasures in heaven. Life that is truly life is a life lived giving and displaying God’s infinite generosity to the world. This is what we were created to do!

Editorial Comment: The Abnormal Psychology of Angry "Crank" Commenters

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, Editor

Date:  1/30/2011
Post:  1,599

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia .....

"Crank" is a pejorative term used for a person who unshakably holds a belief that most of his or her contemporaries consider to be false.  A "cranky" belief is so wildly at variance with commonly accepted belief as to be ludicrous. Cranks characteristically dismiss all evidence or arguments which contradict their own unconventional beliefs, making rational debate an often futile task.

Common synonyms for "crank" include crackpot and kook. A crank differs from a fanatic in that the subject of the fanatic's obsession is either not necessarily widely regarded as wrong or not necessarily a "fringe" belief. Similarly, the word quack is reserved for someone who promotes a medical remedy or practice that is widely considered to be ineffective; this term however does not imply any deep belief in the idea or product they are attempting to sell. Crank may also refer to an ill-tempered individual or one who is in a bad mood.

The second book of the philosopher and popular author Martin Gardner was a study of crank beliefs, Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science. More recently, the mathematician Underwood Dudley has written a series of books on mathematical cranks, including The Trisectors, Mathematical Cranks, and Numerology: Or, What Pythagoras Wrought. And in a 1992 UseNet post, the mathematician John Baez humorously proposed a "checklist", the Crackpot index, intended to "diagnose" cranky beliefs regarding contemporary physics.

According to these authors, virtually universal characteristics of cranks include:
  1. Cranks overestimate their own knowledge and ability, and underestimate that of acknowledged experts.
  2. Cranks insist that their alleged discoveries are urgently important.
  3. Cranks rarely, if ever, acknowledge any error, no matter how trivial.
  4. Cranks love to talk about their own beliefs, often in inappropriate social situations, but they tend to be bad listeners, and often appear to be uninterested in anyone else's experience or opinions.
I have found the Wikipedia information about "cranks" to be most helpful.  Sometimes we get "cranky" commenters here at Hermann Hearsay.  It's not that often, but it does happen from time to time.  When it does happen, it can be most discouraging to my junior staff writers.  Many times, I have had to step in to address the "cranky" commenter myself.  When I do, it has not always gone well even though I have tried to be polite and civil with the complaining person.

It seems to me that cranks have no interest in learning about the subject or person which they harshly criticize.  They simply have no respect for listening to a differing point of view.

They will not read books (or any other kind of written material) on the topic they argue.  To do so would require them to expend some time and energy.  They will not talk to the individual they criticize and smear in an effort to learn his/her side of the story. Their motivation is only to speak (most often loudly) and be heard.

When cranks get into a defensive mode, I think it helps them more in the long run to be ignored.  I am currently ignoring one such crank who has come to this site repeatedly to accuse an innocent man of wrongdoing.  This crank no longer cares whether or not he has his facts correct.  He simply seeks to maliciously smear an innocent man and use the good name of Hermann Hearsay to help him do it.  That's why I am ignoring him!

Hermann Hearsay does not tolerate angry cranks, and we will NEVER allow them to use our blog site to publish and amplify maliciously false accusations about innocent people.

The longer debates with cranks rage on in the Comment Section of our blog site the more likely it is for the crank to write or imply any one or more of the following:
  1. They are a genius on the matter under debate, a genius on the scale of Albert Einstein.
  2. My staff writers who've researched the topic they have written about or the matter which the crank raises in a comment  are ignorant and don't have the gift of seeing the "real" truth and are unwilling to perform investigative due diligence.
  3. My staff writers and I are or ought be afraid of them for some reason or another.
  4. They (and others) are watching me and my writers, implying that we should be concerned for our own physical safety.
  5. And so on to include cursing, threats and intimidation of every kind imaginable.
Obviously, the more they say stuff like this the less likely they are to have an "oops, I was wrong" moment.  Consequently, I think elongated debates reinforce their resistance to being educated in the facts of the matter which they haven choosen to argue.

Thus, it often seems that the only choice which I am left with is to just ignore them.

“Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’” The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, “Rid the earth of him! He’s not fit to live!” – Acts 22:21-22

When the apostle Paul made this statement to his Jewish listeners it was too much for them to bear. They would have to expand their views and accept that God was moving beyond their Jewish cultural borders. This strange new teaching that came from Jesus Christ threatened their very identity as a people. Like the Jews of Paul’s day, we can become very set in our religious ways. Yet the gospel is always expanding beyond our cultural borders to reach the earth. Are we willing to embrace the discomfort of change as this happens? Or will we cling to the systems that we know?

The Decline: The Geography Of A Recession

Published by Dick Schaefer,

According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were nearly 31 million people unemployed (as of August, 2010) -- that's including those involuntarily working part time and those who want a job, but have given up on trying to find one. In the face of the worst economic upheaval since the Great Depression, millions of Americans are hurting. "The Decline: The Geography of a Recession," as created by labor writer LaToya Egwuekwe, serves as a vivid animated
representation of just how much. Watch the deteriorating transformation of the U.S. economy from January 2007 -- approximately one year before the start of the recession -- to the most recent unemployment data available in August of 2010.  Unemployment has not improved since this animation was created.  If anything it has deteriorated further.  Original link: www.latoyaegwuekwe.com/geographyofarecession.html . Commentary:

Pretty sad, isn't it?!  The politicians on a national, state, county and local level have promised you that they are working hard for their constituents to bring jobs to your community.  Have you seen them do anything?  Have you seen any positive results?

The lesson in all of this is that we need to rely upon ourselves vs. politicians or the government.  That's what our fathers and grandfathers and great grandfathers did.  They build this nation on their own self-reliance and grit.  And that's exactly what we need to do in our generation!

If you're waiting on your local Chamber of Commerce to do something, don't hold your breath.  If you are waiting on the Gasconade County IDA, GVEZ and the politicians who sit on their boards to do something, don't hold your breath.  If you're waiting on your representatives in the Missouri State legislature to bring jobs to your local area, don't hold your breath.  If you are waiting for the U.S. Congress and President Obama to do something which actually works, you may find yourself waiting a long, long time!

Folks, you are going to have to DO for yourselves!  Start a small business and control your own destiny!  No capital to start a traditionl business?  Don't let that stand in your way!  Grants and low-interest business loans are available.  You have to search and find them!  Another option is to start a non-traditional network marketing business.  These type of businesses require no large outlays for inventory, overhead, employees, utilities, insurance and physical infrastructure.  They are home-based businesses which anyone with a little imagination and motivation can start.

If you are reading this article and you are thinking that you would like to start a small business, I would be happy to offer thoughts and advice based upon my own experience as a corporate manager, a financial services representative and a network marketing business owner.  A small business of your own can be very satisfying and very profitable IF you are not afraid of hard work.  Robert T. Kiyosaki, himself a successful business man, investor, and author of the "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" book series, has written in his most recent book that "network marketing is the business opportunity of the 21st. century"!
Don't wait on anyone else to help you find a good-paying job!  Take the bull by the horns, and make something happen on your own!

A. E. Newman emailed a letter to us and asked that we publish it.  Newman is a "friend of the unemployed and the underemployed" and a candidate for the office of Southern District Associate Commissioner.  Here's A. E. Newman's Letter to the Editor:

Dear Mr. Oldsun,

As you know our county suffers from a high unemployment rate.  As of December, 2010, the official rate stated by the BLS was 10.1%.  If you add to that a significant number of our citizens who are underemployed based upon their skill and experience level as well as others who have become discouraged to the point that they have dropped out of the labor market, we have a major problem in Gasconade County.

Are our politicians and community leaders doing anything about it?  The answer to that question is that they are obviously NOT doing enough!

I want to try to help the situation.  I have found a website called Jobs.com which advertises jobs in Missouri.  Would you please provide your readers a link to this website.  Tell them to click on the following hotlink:

Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. One man’s faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. – Romans 14:1-2

A theme that runs throughout the New Testament is preferring others as more important than yourself. This passage mentions disputable matters, or practical applications of Christian life that can be interpreted in a number of ways. In this case it was one believer’s dismissal of other gods as false, therefore he felt free to eat meat sacrificed to idols that he didn’t view as real. But another believer saw the meat as defiled and therefore chose to eat only vegetables. Both were set on glorifying God by his actions. When we look past actions and explore motives, we often find common ground. This allows us to accept each other without passing judgment.

Tips For Successful Job Interviewing - What to say and what NOT to say!

The unemployment rate is very high in Gasconade County.  Official numbers for December, 2010 from the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) indicate that the unemployment rate is 10.1%.  That rate DOES NOT include those of you who are underemployed nor those of you who may have become discouraged and have stopped looking for a job.

Now, don't be unnecessarily alarmed.  County Commissioner Jerry Lairmore is working on the problem.  He is a member of both the IDA and GVEZ, and he always gives reports on meetings they have as well as what actions are being taken to bring jobs to Gasconade County.  So, I'm quite sure that job opportunities in the county will be improving very soon!

Many of our readers are unemployed and underemployed and are therefore in search of a job.  Because job interviewing is so vitally important and the competition for good jobs is so great, it is important that you know what to say and what NOT to say in a job interview.  It is my sincere hope that this YouTube video clip will help you in that regard.

Are the government and the corporate media telling the truth about the unemployment rate?

The following article is dated, but the writer, Kurt Nimmo, illustrates that the government (thru the Bureau of Labor Statistics) understates (lies about) unemployment statistics.  In December of 2010, the officially stated unemployment rate for Gasconade County was 10.1%.  In fact, were we to include all those who were under-employed as well as those who have become discouraged and are no longer actively look for a job, the rate would have been significantly higher

Obama and the government are afraid Americans will soon be up in arms over the jobless recovery and the decline in their standard of living. In order to blindside them to the reality of an engineered impoverishment of society a precondition to world government — they routinely cook the figures on unemployment and then feed this to the corporate media.

For the first time in two years, the US economy came tantalizingly close to posting a monthly gain in jobs, reports the Christian Science Monitor. Employer payrolls fell by just 11,000 workers in November, much less than economists expected, according to a Labor Department report Friday. Also, the unemployment rate fell modestly, from 10.2 to 10 percent.

The long-suffering U.S. jobs market improved significantly in November, as employers trimmed the fewest jobs of any month since the start of the recession, and the unemployment rate posted the biggest one-month decline in more than three years, claims CNN. The unemployment rate improved to 10% in the month.

Nancy Pelosi said stealing money from future generations has put the nation on the path back to job growth and illustrates that the economic policies of President Obama and the Democratic Congress are starting to work.

Pelosi also blamed Obamas predecessor. Todays jobs report is evidence that our recovery efforts are moving our economy in the right direction. After losing an average of 673,000 jobs per month in the final three months of the Bush Administration, the report for November showed a job loss of 11,000 jobs — the lowest level since the recession began in December 2007.

Not so fast, says TrimTabs Investment Research.

In fact, the country lost 255,000 jobs in November, a negligible at best improvement of only 10.2% from the 284,000 jobs lost in October. We believe the BLS [Bureau of Labor Statistics] is grossly underestimating current job losses due to their flawed survey methodology. Those flaws include rigid seasonal adjustments, a mysterious birth/death adjustment, and the fact that only 40% to 60% of the BLS survey is complete by the time of the first release and subject to revision, writes TrimTabs.

The BLS (or maybe it should be simply BS) stats may provide Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats with an excuse to claim we are on the mend, however chances are the BLS will eventually revise its pie-in-the-sky figures to reflect reality. In November, the BLS revised their September and October job losses down a surprising 44.5%, or 203,000 jobs. In the twelve months ending in October, the BLS revised their job loss estimates up or down by a staggering 679,000 jobs, or 13.0%. Until this past month, these revisions brought the BLS revised estimates to within a couple percent of TrimTabs original estimates.

As for the unemployment rate — claimed by the corporate media to be around 10 percent — this is smoke and mirrors too. In August, a Federal Reserve official admitted the real unemployment rate is 16 percent. If one considers the people who would like a job but have stopped looking — so-called discouraged workers — and those who are working fewer hours than they want, the unemployment rate would move from the official 9.4 percent to 16 percent, said Atlanta Fed chief Dennis Lockhart.

In reality there are over 26 million Americans who are either jobless or underemployed. The real jobless rate takes into account part-time workers seeking full-time work, discouraged job seekers and persons furloughed from full-time to part-time status. The real rate of unemployment is 17.2% and is a more accurate indicator of the labor market, noted Americans for Democratic Action on December 3.

A vast majority of economists now agree that the current stimulative policies of current administration will lead to a period of slow economic growth and unacceptably high unemployment over the next decade. As of the end of October, more than 1 in every 6 Americans were unable to find full-time employment,

Others put the real unemployment number above 20 percent. If questionable tweaks to the governments statistical data are discarded, insists John Williams of Shadow Government Statistics, the actual unemployment rate, as of July, was 20.6%. Not to scare you, but the situation is actually worse than it seems. Over the years, the government has changed the way it counts the unemployed. An example of this is the criticized Birth-Death Model which was added in 2000. The model is designed to account for the birth and death of businesses and the resultant lag in survey data. Unfortunately, the model doesnt work that well during economic contractions (like we have now) and consistently overstates the number of jobs being created each month.

I've farmed out our weather reporting to AccuWeather.com.  If this works out the way I think it will, I'll have more time to work with Poor Richard on our joint "3-D Blog" venture.
