A. A. Newman, a freshman at the University of Missouri - Columbia, visited with his parents in Bland over the weekend.  A. E. Newman reported that his son is doing great at Mizzou.  "He's getting straight A's in his first semester at MU!" said the elder Newman.  The younger Newman is studying nuclear physics and is preparing for a career with the nuclear Navy.  A. E. Newman went on to say "I just hope the boy doesn't screw up and melt down that research reactor Mizzou has out there on South Providence Road!  He's always been a little accident prone ya know!"

Do you remember "Professor" Irwin Corey, "World's Foremost Authority" and 96 year old comic legend?  He frequently appeared on "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour"Since the 1940's he's donned his "Professor" role and clothes, creating a double-talk style, worthy of many a politician or pretentious orator. He's very much alive and absurdly pontificating to this day.

So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.  ~ Acts 11:26b

Antioch was a big city, so we are reading about an urban church plant in this passage. With the density and diversity of Antioch it is amazing to realize that Christianity flourished in the large cities of that day. The Scripture and history have shown that the challenges of urban life have been a seedbed for church growth. In the rigors of different cultures and religions, the followers of Jesus were so distinct that they received a new name – Christians! What about our day? Are we living in such a way that we are distinct from all of the voices that call out around us? Like the story of Antioch, we have an amazing opportunity in front of us. The gospel was made to prosper in times like these.

Beating the Democrats in November's mid-term elections won't be enough!

“As President Obama remakes his senior staff, he is also shaping a new approach for the second half of his term: to advance his agenda through executive actions he can take on his own, rather than pushing plans through an increasingly hostile Congress.”  ~ From 10/8/2010 L. A. Times article by Peter Nicholas and Christi Parsons

Move over Columbus Day; today is 'National Coming Out Day'. Established in 1988, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights awareness day is being celebrating on college campuses and in communities across the country.

Pardon me, but have I missed something?  I haven't seen any special sales ads in The Hermann A-C or in my recently received ALCO sales circular.  Will Rivertown Restaurant or Lyndee's be serving any 'Coming Out Day' fried chicken dinner specials?  Will Bud Light be on sale at The Barrel Bar or at Sharp Corner Tavern?

At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’”  ~ Mark 5:30-31

We may react to Jesus question in the same way as the disciples. Then we find out that a woman, who was ceremonially unclean and therefore not supposed to touch anyone, had risked death to come and touch Jesus. God the Father was making a statement. Maybe the crowds saw Jesus as a great teacher, but this woman saw something more. When her uncleanness met Jesus, she was no longer unclean. Jesus was greater than her defilement. He was greater than her fear. To approach God in prayer when we feel unclean, weak and fearful is an act of faith that can cleanse and heal us as well. This woman knew that Jesus was greater than all of her issues. Do we see Jesus in the same way?

Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. “Bring them here to me,” he said.  ~ Matthew 14:16-18

It’s interesting to note that when Jesus was about to feed the multitudes he commissioned his disciples with the task. He knew that they didn’t have the resources and they knew it too! Yet following Jesus will lead us into situations where we don’t have the means to meet a need, yet Jesus tells us to do so anyway. Do you feel overwhelmed with your current circumstances? Take the resources you have and bring them to Jesus in prayer. Humility and prayer can do amazing things. It can provide for many in ways that you would never have imagined!

twice as much as I talk!"

This just in!  Exclusive coverage!  No other media organization is covering this breaking story!

A. E. Newman, candidate for Southern District Associate Commissioner, has notified Hermann Hearsay that he will embark upon a "listening tour" throughout the entire Southern District of Gasconade County.

Contacting us early this morning from his campaign headquarters in Bland, Newman said that he wants to be responsive to ALL the people of the southern district.  "My first-grade teacher tought me that because God gave me two ears and one mouth, I should listen twice as much as I talk.  The current Southern District Associate Commissioner seems to talk twice as much as he listens.  IF I am elected, I will change that!"

Newman told us that he plans to begin his "listening tour" in January of 2011.  He is currently lining up churches, VFW halls, restaurants and individuals who will agree to host his "listening tour meetings"

"It's pretty clear that over the last three months the economy has paused. And it's also pretty clear the American people are still demanding and asking the question, 'Where are the jobs?' And the reason we don't have new jobs is because of the job-killing agenda pursued by President Obama and his allies in the Congress."  ~ House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH)

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."  ~ John 1:1

The original Greek for “Word” is logos, which means much more than how we view words. Logos can also be translated as logic. It is a way to think of everything! The apostle John is saying that Jesus is more than a philosophy. He is the rationale of God. In other words, the very nature of Jesus demands that we look at the world in an entirely new way. Jesus Christ is God’s logic for the world!
