Renovated German School Museum

German School Museum
Hermann, MO
Published by Dick Schaefer, Award-winning, Unpaid, Part-time Contributing Writer and Amateur Investigative Reporter

Date:  8/25/2010

The German School Museum in Hermann is once again OPEN for tours!  I worked the afternoon shift as a volunteer tour guide on Tuesday, and I was very impressed by all the great work which has been accomplished by Historic Hermann, Inc. this past year.  Joy Kallmeyer and the entire Board of Directors are to be commended for their outstanding efforts in renovating this great Hermann treasure!

If you are retired, have some time on your hands and would like to volunteer at the German School Museum, please call Mike Martens at 486-1013.  This is my second year as a volunteer.  I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience!  Work with a great group of volunteers, and meet interesting visitors from all over the world!  Yesterday, we were visited by a couple from Istanbul, Turkey!  It's always fun to meet new people.

If you're interested in seeing the renovations up close, we invite you to attend the celebration event planned for the afternoon of Sunday, September 12.  Refreshments will be served.

Don't Fence Me In!

Pubished by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

Rumor in the coffee shops, restaurants, beer taverns and massage parlors all about Hermann is that the empty parking lot directly across from Simon's Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge will soon be fenced in permanently!  Last fall during Octoberbest, the lot was fenced in with pretty bright orange plastic fencing material.  (Being a HHS graduate, I would have preferred Hermann Bearcat blue myself!)

Now comes word, according to my well-placed sources, that the owner of the lot is considering a permanent fence around the perimeter of the lot.  We haven't confirmed this story, so we don't know if the owner is proposing a 10 ft. high solid stone fence, or a barbed wire fence, or a split rail cedar fence.  A question being asked by Hermann locals is "What is the purpose of this fence?"  The opinion being voiced by Hermann locals is "Don't fence in this empty parking lot!"

Willie Nelson says it best ................

If anyone has any further details on this important development in downtown Hermann, please let us know!  We understand that a former partner of the man who owns the empty parking lot at First & Schiller has published an expose on this matter at his online news website.  But since we are not paid subscribers, we can't even sneak a peek!  Wish we could afford the $19.95 annual fee for an annual subscription!  Doggone it!  *&(^$#@  Ya know, as a member of the local media we should be entitled to a free subscription just as a professional courtesy!

Shelbyfest Coming To Hermann

Publised by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSPWRAFTC & Editor

Shelbyfest is coming to Hermann this weekend!  Cool Shelby Mustangs of every color!  Beautiful paint jobs and shiny chrome wheels!  Throaty exhaust noise!  I can't wait!

The shiny Mustangs and Shelby Mustangs will begin rolling into Hermann on Thursday.  The event begins Friday, April 23 and ends on Sunday, April 25.  This is the Fourth Annual Shelbyfest in Hermann and the organizers are anticipating as many as 350 to 400 vehicles this year.
But what's a Shelby?  Or more to the point, who is this man named Shelby?

The following information is taken from Wikipedia:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Carroll Hall Shelby, (born January 11, 1923 in Leesburg, Texas) is a retired American racing and veteran automotive designer and racing driver.
Personal life
Carroll Shelby was born on January 11, 1923 to Warren Hall Shelby, a rural mail carrier, and his wife Eloise Lawrence Shelby.  Shelby suffered heart valve leakage problems by age 7 and spent most of his childhood in bed. By age 14, Shelby's health improved and he was subsequently declared to have "outgrown" his health problems.  Shelby's first wife was Jeanne Fields; they married on December 18, 1943. Their daughter Sharon Anne Shelby was born a year later on December 27, 1944. They had two more children; sons named Michael Hall (born November 2, 1946) and Patrick Burke (born October 23, 1947). Shelby and Fields later separated and divorced in February 1960. Shelby later married his current wife Cleo Patricia Marguerita Shelby on September 3, 1997.
Automotive Executive of the Year Award - 2008 Honoree
Carroll Shelby was been named as the 2008 Automotive Executive of the Year and received a lifetime achievement award, honoring a career of excellence in the automotive industry. The award, sponsored by DNV Certification and the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), has been designated by a nominating body, representing automotive journalists, supplier community representatives and automotive industry analysts. Since 1964, the Automotive Executive of the Year Award has recognized excellence in automotive leadership. Past winners include Jim Press, Bill Ford, Dieter Zetsche and Lee Iacocca. The list of past winners illustrates the rich history and honor surrounding this prestigious award.
Life before racing
After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas, Shelby enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, serving in World War II as a flight instructor and test pilot.
Driving career
Carroll Shelby has had an impressive impact on automotive racing and design over the last 50 years. Starting out amateur, he soon became a driver for the Cad-Allard, Aston Martin, and Maserati teams during the 1950s. Driving for Donald Healey, in a streamlined and supercharged, specially-modified, Austin-Healey 100S, he set 16 US and international speed records. Teamed with Roy Salvadori, and driving for Aston Martin, he won the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans.
He drove in the Mount Washington Hillclimb Auto Race in a specially prepared Ferrari roadster, to a record run of 10:21.8 seconds on his way to victory in 1956.
He was Sports Illustrated's driver of the year in 1956 and 1957.
He competed in Formula One from 1958 to 1959, participating in a total of eight World Championship races and several non-championship races.
Shelby the constructor
After retiring from driving in October 1959 for health reasons, he opened a high performance driving school and the Shelby-American company. He obtained a license to import a successful British Sports racing car manufactured by AC Motors of England, installing an American Ford engine rather than its original British Bristol engine, and introduced the car to the American public as an AC Cobra, Later to be known as a Shelby or Shelby Cobra. Shelby did not design or manufacture this car, but he did establish an appreciation for it on the North American Continent. Shelby continued on to be influential with Ford manufactured cars including the GT40, the Mustang-based Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500, and of course the 427 Shelby Cobra. Parting with Ford, Shelby moved on to help develop performance cars with divisions of the two other Big 3 American companies, Dodge, and Oldsmobile. The most memorable of these cars was the Dodge Viper.
He was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1991, and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1992.
In the intervening years Shelby had an interesting series of ventures start and stop (and be stopped) relating to production of 'completion' Cobras (Cobras which were allegedly built using 'left over' parts and frames). In the 1960s, the FIA required entrants (Shelby, Ford, Ferrari, etc.) to produce at least 100 cars for homologated classes of racing. Shelby simply built an insufficient number of cars and skipped a large block of VIN numbers, to create the illusion the company had produced large numbers of cars. Decades later in the 1990s, Carroll alleged that he had found the 'left over' frames, and began selling cars which were supposedly finally 'completed.' After it was discovered the cars were built from scratch in collaboration with McCluskey, Ltd., they were re-termed 'continuation' Cobras. The cars are still built to this day, known as the current CSX4000 series of Cobras.
In 2003, Ford Motor Co. and Carroll Shelby mended ties again. Carroll Shelby became technical advisor to the Ford GT project. In that same year, he formed Carroll Shelby International Inc. based in Nevada.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So, get out and take a close look at these wonderful Shelby Mustang cars this weekend.  They will once again fill up Fourth and Schiller Streets.  Be sure to be there at 12 o'clock noon on Saturday when they rev up their engines!  One of the coolest things I've ever experienced!  And while you're out enjoying the Shelbyfest this weekend, remember Carroll Shelby, the man who started it all!

"End Of An Era" ..... From The Night Desk - 1/7/2010

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, Staff Reporter

A grand era of online news reporting came to a sad but unceremonious close today as the Hermann Muenster sign was taken down and the new Hermann News sign was hoisted into its place at 406 South Market Street in Hermann.  Apparently, Hermann News will continue to operate in the news offices once occupied by Hermann Muenster staff.

It's not clear whether or not litigation between the previous co-owners of Hermann Muenster will follow.  One of the co-owners of Hermann Muenster has intimated publicly that litigation is a possibility.  Hermann Hearsay will monitor court filings and report to you if any action is initiated by either party.

Jeff Noedel's new CountyNewsLIVE.com started up earlier this week amidst the fanfare of friends and supporters.  Noedel was a co-owner of Hermann Muenster.  Mr. Noedel and his ever-present, camera-totin' side-kick, MU Journalism School grad, Alex Luft, will be holding their Grand Opening tomorrow afternoon at their new office location on West 5th Street.

Hermann Hearsay wishes HermannNews.com, CountyNewsLIVE.com and the venerable Hermann Advertiser-Courier newspaper all the best!  My goodness!  With all this high-powered local news coverage, Hermann residents are going to know about every little fender-bender, every feral cat running loose within the city limits, every controvery in the halls of both city and county government, and every indiscrete or promiscuous action of their neighbor!

Hermann Hearsay Night Desk

From The Night Desk Of Jimmy Oldsun - 1/6/2010

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, Staff Reporter on the Night Desk

A credible source who prefers to remain anonymous at this time has told Hermann Hearsay that the owners of a certain well-known business located on Market Street were seen moving office furniture and equipment out of their rented office space on Tuesday evening.  Hermann Hearsay has not been able to confirm this report with an independent second source nor has Hermann Hearsay been able to contact the owners themselves to find out if they are moving to a new location or whether they are just upgrading to newer office furniture and equipment.  That is why we are not reporting the name of the business nor the names of the business owners.  If anyone can shed any further light on this apparent
developing story, please contact our news department as soon as possible.

In an unrelated matter, two ambulance vehicles were called out in the eleven o'clock hour.  Since our owner, T. T. Tiger, is too squeaky tight to buy us a police scanner, I am unable to report anything further on this matter.  I'm sure we will all hear more about it in a coffee shop or convenience store tomorrow morning.  I hope you can wait until then for heavensakes!

On the continuing matter of the stray cats running rampant in Hermann, I can't say that I've seen anything of them as I have driven around town tonight.  I suppose that they may have all died off in the terrible cold last night.  If anyone out there has any stray cats to report, please contact our news department or Alderman John Penning.

Elmer J. Fudd, owner of the recently opened Elmer J. Fudd's Wabbit Stew has asked us to keep our eyes peeled for rabbits.  I didn't see any rabbits tonight, but I did see a grey squirrel running along a power line in the downtown area just before dusk this evening.

If you haven't already taken your patio plants inside yet this winter, it's probably too late.  I'm pretty sure the extreme cold spell has killed all patio potted plants by now.  The Weather Channel says it's 8 degrees Fahrenheit at about 12:30 am, Wednesday morning, but my outside thermometer is reading 10 degrees Fahrenheit.  The flags at the V.F.W. and the German School Museum indicate a very, very slight breeze.

The 2010 Gasconade County Sheriff Calendars are now available.  I've seen them at Time For Pie and the Hermann Advertiser-Courier, both sponsors of this year's calendar.  I don't where you'd go to buy one or get a free one, I'm just reporting that they're out and about.

On a non-local matter, I am anxiously awaiting college football's national championship game this Thursday night between the Texas Longhorns and the Alabama Crimson Tide.  I haven't the foggiest idea how this game might go, but I think it's gonna be a real battle of two great teams.  Bama is favored by 3-1/2 points.

Well, Clark told be to keep these nightly reports crisp and to the point, so I think I'll conclude by reporting that it's a cold night in Hermann and everything throughout the community seems to be buttoned up tighter than a tick!

Colder Than A Well-Digger's Ass In Alaska!

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, Staff Reporter

Brrrrrrrrrr!  It's a cold one tonight!  About 7 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale at 3:25 am accordin' to my uncalibrated outside thermometer.  I don't know what the windchill is.  If ya wanna know that, you'll have to go to one of those fancier daily news websites in Hermann or you can just go to:  http://www.weatherchannel.com/.

Clark has assigned me to the night desk.  He says our competition is coverin' Hermann news on a 24/7 basis.  Says that if they're gonna cover Hermann around the clock, then we are too!  That Clark is a real task master!

Well, I haven't heard of any worthwhile news to report to you so far tonight.  I saw the cop car go by a few times on their normal patrol.  And I saw a grey cat cross market street at about 2:56 am this morning!  It might have been one of those stray cats that Hermann Alderman John Penning has been complainin' about.  Nope, I didn't get an exclusive interview with the cat.  He ran off before I could get my pocket recorder out of my coat.  Maybe Jeff Noedel got an interview with him though.  I understand Jeff is manning the night shift over at Jeff Noedel's CountyNewsLIVE.com.

This night shift reporting is for the damned birds ...... for the penquins to be exact!

Signing off until tomorrow night,

Temporary Live Webcam At 4th & Schiller Streets

Published by Clark Kant, Editor In Chief

A dark rainy November night at 4th & Schiller Streets in Hermann!  Sorry, our webcam broke at 7:30 pm tonight, so we have substituted a still image of a rainy intersection in New York City!  Our crews will work through the night until the live webcam image is restored!
