Don't Fence Me In!

Pubished by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

Rumor in the coffee shops, restaurants, beer taverns and massage parlors all about Hermann is that the empty parking lot directly across from Simon's Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge will soon be fenced in permanently!  Last fall during Octoberbest, the lot was fenced in with pretty bright orange plastic fencing material.  (Being a HHS graduate, I would have preferred Hermann Bearcat blue myself!)

Now comes word, according to my well-placed sources, that the owner of the lot is considering a permanent fence around the perimeter of the lot.  We haven't confirmed this story, so we don't know if the owner is proposing a 10 ft. high solid stone fence, or a barbed wire fence, or a split rail cedar fence.  A question being asked by Hermann locals is "What is the purpose of this fence?"  The opinion being voiced by Hermann locals is "Don't fence in this empty parking lot!"

Willie Nelson says it best ................

If anyone has any further details on this important development in downtown Hermann, please let us know!  We understand that a former partner of the man who owns the empty parking lot at First & Schiller has published an expose on this matter at his online news website.  But since we are not paid subscribers, we can't even sneak a peek!  Wish we could afford the $19.95 annual fee for an annual subscription!  Doggone it!  *&(^$#@  Ya know, as a member of the local media we should be entitled to a free subscription just as a professional courtesy!

  2. Is there some sort of conspiracy to run Stevie Simon out of business? First the City makes the stree in front of his place one-way. Now he may be losing the free parking across the street!

  4. Are they going to be charging $5.00 per vehicle to park in that empty lot? One of the local wineries charges for parking ya know!

If I owned that empty lot, I'd build a 4-story parking garage and charge for parking.

  6. One of those nice white-washed wooden fences like Tom Sawyer painted up in Hannibal would be real attractive in the downtown area.

  7. Is Glenn going to be fencing something "in" or is he going to be fencing something "out"? Maybe the feral cats are over-running his property down there? If that's the case, I could rent him the services of my bulldog
"Bruiser". "Bruiser" keeps cats away at my place so I'm sure he could help ol' Glenn out as well!

Was drinkin' a few long-necks down at The Barrel last night. Folks in there were hopping mad about the news! The biker guys and the biker chicks say they're gonna boycott Glenn's winery if he shuts down there off-street parking. Those biker people like to park their Harleys in a safe place!

Hope they don't spray paint graffiti on Glenn's new fence!

  10. I think it should be a nice wrought iron fence (painted black) and built upon a nice low-profile brick wall with white capstones. That would really be cool!

  11. The Great Wall of China is really cool! It is very thick/wide. You can even walk on top of it. That would be a neat idea for the vacant lot on the corner of First & Water Streets. We could walk on top of Glenn's Wall and get a good view of the river!

  14. I walked downtown to investigate the rumor about the plan to fence in the vacant lot at the corner of First & Schiller Streets. I think there is merit to this rumor. The utility lines have been flagged in preparation for any necessary digging along Water Street. Also merchants in the area were aware of the rumor. The rumor is very strong. I don't know if a construction permit has been obtained. I'll check that out on Monday.

  15. Will there be constantine razor wire at the top of the fence perimeter and guard turrets at all four corners? I recommend high intensity flood lights as well!

I wish they'd pave that corner lot rather than fence it in!

  17. Has anyone heard whether or not Berlener's and Save-A-Lot will be fencing in their parking lot?

A well-manicured hedge around that corner lot would look really classy! With a big water fountain in the center of the lot too!
