BREAKING NEWS - Associate Circuit Judge John B. Berkemeyer calls meeting to discuss Sheriff Randy Esphorst's initiative to study feasibility of building a jail in Swiss

Published by Clark Kant, Contributing Writer and Investigative Reporter

Date:  11/8/2010
Post:  1,036

Hermann Hearsay learned this evening that Gasconade County Sheriff Randy Esphorst's recent proposal to study the feasibility of constructing a county jail at Swiss, MO, a proposal which was presented to the County Commission, endorsed by Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore and ultimately approved and authorized for payment by Presiding Commissioner Ron Jost at the Commission's 11/4 meeting in Owensville, has NOW been challenged or at least questioned by Associate Circuit Judge John B. Berkemeyer.  Presiding Commissioner Ron Jost approved and authorized an expenditure of $2,500 for the County Sheriff to hire a consulting firm to conduct the feasibility study.  The funds have been allocated, the consulting firm has been engaged and the study actually began today.  In other words, "the horse is out of the barn"!

As we understand Judge Berkemeyer's objection, it is believed by some that Missouri state statute prohibits the construction of a county jail at any location but the county seat.  And if this is in fact the case, as was also pointed out a few weeks ago to Sheriff Esphorst by an attorney representing the City of Rosebud, then the expenditure of $2,500 of public money will be for naught and should never have been proposed, approved or authorized for payment.

Tomorrow I will be getting a copy of the video tape which records the discussion that took place at today's County Commission Meeting, and I will be doing further research into this matter.  I understand that Judge Berkemeyer has called a special meeting for this Friday morning at 8:00 a.m.  Participants will be Judge Berkemeyer, Prosecuting Attorney Ada Brehe-Krueger, Sheriff Randy Esphorst and Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry LairmoreJudge Berkemeyer stressed several times during the discussion that he would like for this Friday's meeting to be a very positive one.  (Note:  It is not known at this time whether notice of the meeting will be posted to the public nor whether the public may attend the meeting.)

Stay tuned for additional reporting later this week.

"Ring of Fire" or "The Ring of Fire" is a country music song popularized by Johnny Cash and co-written by June Carter (wife of Johnny Cash) and Merle Kilgore. The single appears on Cash's 1963 compilation album, Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash. The song was originally recorded by June's sister, Anita Carter, on her Mercury Records album Folk Songs Old and New (1963) as "(Love's) Ring of Fire".

The song was recorded on March 25, 1963, and became the biggest hit of Johnny Cash's career, staying at number one on the charts for seven weeks.

Here is Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson performing "Ring of Fire" .....

Fire!  Something about the hot flames of a raging fire
attracts our attention!
In this fire, what is the combustible material?  Can you guess?
Are these flames coming from a home fire?
An automobile engulfed in flames after gasoline tank explosion?
A grass fire?
For answer, see first comment.

LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.  ~ Psalm 16:5

David, the author of this Psalm, was distressed as he was writing this. Yet in the midst of great hardship, David acknowledged that God guards those things that are valuable to David: his portion, his cup and his lot. His portion was the provision that was needed for him to survive. His cup was the purpose in life that he had (remember Jesus, who spoke to the Father of “taking this cup from him”). His lot was the inheritance of land that was a major part of preserving Jewish lineage. When David felt separated from all of these things, he reminded himself that his current situation was not the final word: it was God’s faithfulness that he trusted in during times of trial. That same faithfulness is available to you and me. Our God is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Song Of The Day - Sunday, 11/7/2010

This great old hymn goes out to all of our readers on this the first Sunday in November .  From the 'Titanic' soundtrack, here is "Nearer My God To Thee" .....

Line from the movie, 'Titanic' ... "Gentlemen, it has been an honor playing with you tonight."

Lyrics: Sarah F. Adams, 1805-1848

Music: Lowell Mason, 1792-1872

Lyrics:

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me;
Still all my song would be nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I'd be nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

There let the way appear steps unto heav'n;
All that Thou sendest me in mercy giv'n;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

There with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Or if on joyful wing, cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upwards I fly,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?”  ~ Luke 5:29-30

Jesus was always making religious leaders uncomfortable. To eat at the house of Levi with his guest list was scandalous to the Pharisees, because tax collectors were regarded as traitors to the Jews. They were notorious for using their position for personal gain and were seen as informants to the Romans. Are we willing to eat with scandalous people? If all our friends are Christian, we miss the path of the Master. The safe and sanitized bubble of today’s Christianity needs more dinners with tax collectors and sinners. Who are the tax collectors and sinners of your neighborhood? Do they like you so much that they invite you over to their place for dinner? Does that make you nervous? Jesus life challenges the Pharisee in all of us. He wants to lead us forward and outward with the love of God that has overcome the world.

Editorial Comment: Stories which Hermann Hearsay will never cover!

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

The editorial board here at Hermann Hearsay has a long-standing policy that there are certain stories which we will NEVER publish.  Recent coverage of these types of stories by another online news agency has convinced us that we have been correct in our conservative editorial policy.  We affirmed our policy in our Saturday morning policy meeting this past week.

We will NEVER EVER stoop so low as to cover any of the following sensational, voyeuristic and privacy invasive stories:
  1. motor vehicle wrecks and collisions where mangled and blood-stained vehicles are photographed wrapped around a tree or wrapped around another vehicle while the occupant(s) has/have been transported to either the hospital or to the morgue,
  2. single-family and multiple-family dwelling fires where homes and apartments are photographed or video-tape recorded while they are engulfed in flames and the occupants stand helplessly by shivering in the cold night air, and
  3. funerals and grave site burial services where bereaved family members and friends are photographed or video-tape recorded during what should rightfully be their personal and private moments of overwhelming grief.
This type of "news coverage" is OBSCENE.  We will NEVER seek to profit from the misery and personal suffering of other human beings.  Yes, these types of stories might attract a few extra readers seeking to satisfy their morbid and voyeuristic curiosity, but we choose not to be in the business of publishing that kind of heartless, graphic and sensational material.

Additionally, we have taken the editorial position that we will take the moral high ground and denounce publishers who engage is such obscene "news reporting".  Local news media organizations much self-regulate the entire industry.  In this vein, we call upon CNL (CountyNewsLIVE.com) to cease and desist from this type of sensational and obscene reporting.  If this type of reporting does not cease at CNL, we promise that we will take it upon ourselves to make them quite famous within the local community for their tasteless coverage of such stories.

For reference, here are the most recent examples of sensational reporting:

Rigid Adherence To Party Politics Can Be Dangerous

Published by Dick Schaefer, Award-winning, Unpaid, Part-time Contributing Writer; Amateur Investigative Reporter; and Aspiring Photo-Journalist

Are you a blind follower of the Democratic Party, the Republican Party, the Libertarian Party, the Tea Party, the Socialist Party, or some other political party?  OR do you think for yourself?  Are you an independent thinker who leads others rather than blindly following the political party leaders (demagogues)?

I know people who have voted exclusively for Democrats their entire lives.  Heck, their parents and grandparents voted for Democrats their entire lives!  And I know people who have voted exclusively for Republicans their entire lives.  Their parents and grandparents voted for Republicans their entire lives.  Because I have lived in Gasconade County and Cape Girardeau County the better part of my life, I know more of the latter than the former.

Tell me, do you think it is smart to be locked into one political party and one ideology to the extent that you never consider voting for a candidate of the other party?  Do you think this is a good thing for democracy?  Do you think that blind adherence to one political ideology is a good thing?

Let's say you're a strong conservative Republican, and you have a choice between an arrogant and incompetent incumbent Republican and a competent conservative Democrat in a city or county election.  Do you blindly vote for the incumbent Republican because YOU ARE A REPUBLICAN and YOUR PARENTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN REPUBLICANS or do you vote for the conservative Democrat who you know to be much more qualified for the job?

In the recent mid-term elections, some prominent conservative Republicans supported and voted for a couple competent, conservative Democrats rather than follow the party line.  They did this because they judged the Democratic challengers to be more competent, less arrogant and more worthy of their support.  These conservative and independent thinking Republicans followed their own personal convictions rather than the endorsements of the County Republicans.  In a few cases, these Republicans recognized they would face the wrath (and intimidation) of certain arrogant Republican party regulars.  And that's exactly what happened!

I commend the Stemme's, the Kallmeyer's, A. E. Newman and many others for having the courage and sound judgment to go against the flow!  I denounce a certain "goose-stepping" Owensville Republican for attempting to browbeat Olan Stemme in his office immediately prior to the election because he supported a Democrat candidate for County Clerk.

What are you?  Are you an independent thinker?  Do you have the courage of your convictions to go against your political party and vote for the candidate of another party when you judge that candidate to be more worthy and deserving?  OR are you a blind follower of the dictates of a political party?  Do you march to your own beat, OR are you a blind "goose-stepping party regular"?

You may recall that the German people learned how dangerous it can be to blindly follow one political party!  Let us hope and pray that will never happen in America!

When the Canaanites who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning.” That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim.  ~ Genesis 50:11

This may seem like an obscure Scripture but it should challenge every one of us. This passage describes the funeral of Jacob, the father of the 12 tribes of Israel. His son Joseph, has fulfilled a promise to bury his father in the land of Canaan and all of Egypt is mourning. These were God followers whose lives influenced everyone around them. There was a legacy that was so profound that it affected the people who disagreed with Jacob and the God he served. What about our lives? If we left our neighborhoods, would our neighbors mourn the loss to the community?
