A Sicilian "Message"

One of my all-time favorite movies is 'The Godfather Series (Parts I, II and III)'.  There are many memorable scenes, but one that has popped into my mind today as the result of a "message" I received today is the scene which follows:

Sonny orders Clemenza to immediately punish stoolie Paulie: "Take care of that sonofabitch right away. Paulie sold out the old man, that stronz. I don't want to see him again. Make that first thing on your list, understand?" Just then, a brown paper-wrapped package is delivered and unwrapped by Tessio - a fish is found within Luca's bulletproof vest. It indicates that Luca Brazi has been executed gangster-style - his body has been thrown in the river. Clemenza tells Sonny what it means:

"It's a Sicilian message. It means Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes."

Today I received something akin to a Sicilian message.  Really it wasn't nearly as clever nor as ominous and threatening as a Sicilian message.  Perhaps it would be better described as an unimaginative clumsy message from a local redneck bully BIG MAN wannabe who evidently doesn't like some of the things I am publishing here on Hermann Hearsay.  You see, among other things, he has a different perspective than I do on the circus environment which is the Gasconade County Commission.  That's fine.  He has a right to his own opinions and viewpoints.  But I have a right to my opinions and viewpoints as well!

The best way to deal with a cowardly bully is to call them out.  Expose them to the fresh air and sun light of the day!  That's why I'm calling out our newest commenter 'Leona1412'.

'Leona1412', your subtle "message" is not appreciated.  We will track your IP address and GPS coordinates should that become necessary.  And with that information, we will discover your real name.  I doubt that you would want us to publish it or turn it over to the authorities.  So let me "make you an offer you can't refuse" ..... why don't you just slither away into the darkness and spare yourself the personal embarrassment of being identified!

Larry Miskel and Sharon Meyer Receive Positive Reception In Owensville!

I had the pleasure of riding along with other supporters on Larry Miskel's wagon in the Gasconade County Fair Parade yesterday evening.  Larry is one of two Republican candidates vieing for the office of Gasconade County Presiding Commissioner in the August 3rd primary election.  Larry is challenging two-term incumbent Ron Jost.

Lots of smiling faces lined the long parade route two to three persons deep on both sides.  I was amazed at how many people came out for this parade on a hot humid evening in Owensville!  I saw lots of young families with their enthusiastic young children.  Larry walked the entire parade route with three other supporters.  They handed out Larry's campaign literature and answered quick questions.  It appeared to me that Larry was very well received and can expect to receive strong support throughout the county.  The parade watchers were very friendly and courteous!

Directly in front of Larry Miskel's wagon was Sharon Meyer and her group of enthusiastic supporters.  Sharon is the Democratic candidate for the office of County Clerk.  She will face two-term incumbent Lesa Lietzow in the November general election.  Sharon and her supporters also walked the parade route handing out their campaign flyers.  They too were well-received by parade watchers!

Quincy McGoo falls off barstool at The Barrel Bar!

THIS NEWS REPORT FILED IN JUST 2 MINUTES AFTER WE LEARNED ABOUT IT!  WE'RE FAST!  IN FACT, WE'RE FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BULLET ..... JUST LIKE SUPERMAN!


This happened just 2 minutes ago!  Why wait 22 minutes to see the story published by CNL or why wait a week later to see the same story in The Hermann A-C when you can read all about it here on Hermann Hearsay ..... 11 times faster! 

We don't know if it was really Mr. McGoo or not but we think it was.  Kinda looked like him anyway!  Bald head, a bit rotund and those unmistakeable squinty eyes!  If it wasn't Mr. McGoo, our apologies to him and his family.  We were rushing out the rear entrance to file our report so we couldn't confirm.  We don't know if Mr. McGoo broke his nose when he hit it on the bar during his fall ..... but let's just say he did!  Makes for a cool, salacious story!  We understand Mr. McGoo's wife wasn't called, because McGoo was pretty inebriated.  If she learns of his poor unfortunate drunken mishap by reading about it here on Hermann Hearsay before the police can contact her, we apologize!  We're just sooooo darned fast!  More important to be fast than considerate of the next of kin!  Well, we don't know if McGoo ultimately expired enroute to the hospital.  You see, in 2 minutes, we didn't have time to check into that aspect of the story! 

The important thing is that we're FAST!  AND WE'RE ALSO FULL OF ERRORS, LIES, HALF-TRUTHS, DISTORTIONS AND INNUENDOES!  You pretty much can't trust a word that we've published, but the important thing is that we're FAST!

BREAKING NEWS - Presiding Commissioner Jost Angrily Lashes Out At Attendee Of Today's County Commission Meeting

NOTE:  THIS IS A PRELIMINARY REPORT.  MORE TO COME AFTER WE REVIEW AVAILABLE AUDIO AND VIDEO RECORDINGS.

Two eyewitness sources called this morning to inform Hermann Hearsay that Presiding Commissioner Ron Jost angrily lashed out at Hermann Alderman John Penning, one of the attendees at this morning's Gasconade County Commission Meeting at the Courthouse.  Jost is reported to have jumped up from behind his desk as he then came out into the public seating area where the elderly John Penning was seated.  Jost towered over the seated Penning in an angry, threatening way.  At that point, Jost demanded that John Penning leave the meeting or he (Jost) would ask that the Sheriff have him removed.  Jost then declared the public portion of the meeting closed and cleared the meeting room of all attendees which included other citizens and members of the press.  At that point, the Commission went into a planned closed session meeting to receive a preliminary report from the state auditors.

Hermann Hearsay will be purchasing a copy of the video tape recorded by Charlie Brown today so that we can review the angry exchange between Ron Jost and John Penning.  We will also be reviewing an audio recording of the meeting made available to us by one of the meeting attendees.  We will report more details to you later this evening or tomorrow just as soon as we can sort through "who said what".

Note:  Jeff Noedel of CountyNewsLIVE.com posted an article on his "news" website just 22 minutes after the Commission Meeting abruptly ended.  In his article, Noedel "spins" the story to his own personal suiting.  Noedel published his "preliminary teaser report" in such a way as to make it appear that both John Penning and Matt Penning were the villains in this morning's meeting.  Noedel has thus far not reported very much about what led to this incident which was something that occurred at last Thursday's Road Department meeting.  We will be monitoring CNL's "reporting" on this story.  The question is ... Will it be another one of those secret hidden postings available to paid subscribers only?  Or will Noedel publish his report for all the world to see?

Anyone in Hermann who has cable TV should make plans to watch or record the video tape broadcast of this morning's County Commission Meeting which will be aired tomorrow (Friday) on the City of Hermann's public channel.  This morning's County Commission meeting was apparently very exciting, but it was also extremely disfunctional ..... just as so many of them have previously been !

Once again, we have further undeniable, graphic, video-recorded proof that Ron Jost is neither intellectually nor tempermentally fit to lead this county.  And with the latest reporting by Jeff Noedel, we see that no matter what the substance of the wrong-doing or unprofessional conduct by Jerry Lairmore or Ron Jost, the reporting by CNL is always spun so that the blame is cast upon someone else.  This morning, it just happened to be the elderly father of Matt Penning who got "thrown under the bus" so Lairmore and Jost could be protected.

During this morning's meeting, John Penning, a Hermann Alderman, confronted Jerry Lairmore about calling his son a "lieing son-of-a-bitch" at last Thursday's Road Department meeting in the presence of Presiding Commissioner Jost (who did absolutely nothing to stop it) and three county employees.  Amazingly, Noedel has found a way to make the story about John Penning telling Jost to "shut up" and Matt Penning's efforts to bring the county' tire purchasing problems to light rather than to make the story about the gross unprofessionalism of Jerry Lairmore and the failure by Ron Jost to maintain decorum at the County's Road Department Meetings.

Ain't it interesting that Presiding Commissioner Ron Jost managed to find the intestinal fortitude to confront citizen John Penning for "being out of line" during this morning's meeting but could not find that same intestinal fortitude to confront Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore exactly one week ago for "being out of line" for badgering, brow-beating and calling his colleague a "lieing son-of-a-bitch"?  Double standard, Mr. Jost?

A. E. Newman, owner and operator of 'Mid-Missouri Mule Rides' near Bland, MO, snapped a photo of one of the female horseflies abundant on his mule farm.  See photo below.  We asked Newman if these large flies should more properly be called muleflies, but he insisted that they be called horseflies so as not to bring disrepute upon his mules.


Horsefly - Any member of the dipteran genus Tabanus or, more generally, of the family Tabanidae. These stout flies range from as small as a housefly to as large as a bumblebee. Sometimes called greenheaded monsters, horseflies have metallic or iridescent eyes. Adults are fast, strong fliers usually found around streams, marshes, and wooded areas. They may carry animal diseases, including anthrax, tularemia, and trypanosomiasis. The bites of the bloodsucking females can be painful, and a swarm may suck more than 3 oz (about 90 ml) of blood a day from an animal. Males feed on nectar, honeydew, and plant sap. Horseflies of the genus Chrysops, usually called deerflies, are smaller and have dark markings on the wings.

Campaign Financing, Presiding Commissioner Race

Have you ever checked into the campaign financing for any of your local election races?  To be honest, I had never before looked into the financing of any local election campaigns.  I was always too busy working, making a living for my family and enjoying life.

But I have time to look into things like this now that I'm retired.  That's why I looked into the campaign financing for the Presiding Commissioner race in  Gasconade County.  I went to the Missouri Ethics Commission website at www.mec.mo.gov.com/.  Then I clicked on "Information about >>> Campaign Financing".  That brought me to a menu where I selected "Campaign Finance Searches >>> Candidates".  Then I did searches for the candidates for Presiding Commissioner.  I expected to find campaign finance information for all three candidates: Ron Jost (R), Larry Miskel (R) and Jerry Spurgeon (D).

But here's what I did find when I entered my search parameters as follows:

Registered Candidates and Candidate Committees

Election Year -- Select Year -- -- 2010

Political Office -- COMMISSIONER

Political Subdivision -- GASCONADE COUNTY

Committee Status -- All Committees -- ACTIVE TERMINATED

SEARCH FOR: COMMISSIONER IN -- ALL -- IN GASCONADE COUNTY

MECID -- A101288

COMMITTEE NAME -- MISKEL FOR PRESIDING COMMISSIONER

LAST NAME -- MISKEL

FIRST NAME -- LARRY

YEAR -- 2010

OFFICE SOUGHT -- COMMISSIONER

DISTRICT SUBDIVISION -- GASCONADE COUNTY

STATUS -- Active

Well, you can just imagine my surprise (and disappointment) when all I could find was information regarding Larry Miskel's campaign finances.  As of this date (7/28/2010), Ron Jost (R) and Jerry Spurgeon (D) have not yet registered anything about their campaign finances with the Missouri Ethics Commission.  When I looked further into this question, I was told that a candidate who expects to be self-financed and expects to limit their campaign contribution receipts and outgoing expenditures to $1,000 or less need not file all the otherwise required financial reports with the Missouri Ethics Commission.

Hmmmmm?  So then, by finding nothing on file for Jost and Spurgeon, am I to conclude that Messrs. Jost and Spurgeon expect to have campaign contributions and expenditures (including donations in kind) which total $1,000 or less?  I suppose that is the inescapable conclusion ..... unless Jost and/or Spurgeon are just late in filing their reports which were due on 7/15 and 7/26 (8-days prior to primary election date).

As for Larry Miskel's campaign finance reports, they are all there on file with the Missouri Ethics Commission.  They all appear to be in good order .... filed on time or ahead of deadline dates, very organized and very complete.  If you'd like to take a look at them, you can click on the following link and you will be taken directly to a summary page without need for navigating through the Missouri Ethics Commission website:

Editorial Comment: Hermann Hearsay Traffic Rankings Improving Dramatically Since July 1st

During the past month, Hermann Hearsay has experienced a dramatic improvement in our traffic rankings as measured and reported daily by Alexa.com.

On July 1st, our traffic rankings were as follows:
  • Alexa U.S. Traffic Ranking:  337,491
  • Alexa World Traffic Ranking:  well over 1 million
As of today, 7/28, our traffic rankings are as follows:
  • Alexa U.S. Traffic Ranking:  146,071 (improvement of 191,420)
  • Alexa World Traffic Ranking:  970,583 (first time under 1 million)
Because our Alexa World Traffic Ranking has dropped under 1 million for the first time , we will begin tracking our World Traffic Ranking along with our U.S. Traffic Ranking on a daily frequency
and report it along with the other 'Performance Metrics' which follow each of our postings.

We are grateful to our many loyal readers and to the new readers we have picked up during the month of July!  Our pledge to you is that we work to continuously improve the quality and accuracy of our content. 

We have decided to keep our daily format the same for the time being.  We will continue to bring you our 'Quote Of The Day', our 'Laugh Of The Day', our 'Photo Of The Day' and one or two news analysis articles or political opinion commentaries.  In the future, we may add a 'Bible Verse Of The Day', a 'Song Of The Day' or a 'This Date In History' column.  We are also considering the addition of daily history education column ....... either 'Missouri History' or 'U.S. Founding Father History'.

Business at 'Mid-Missouri Mule Rides' near Bland has been picking up since A. E. Newman began offering his "romantic champagne and caviar mule rides at sunset" just three months ago.  Because of the increasing demand by young lovers from all over the region, Newman has purchase three more mules.  The mules in the photo below were purchased from a rancher in Montana.
