Charlie Farquharson has transmitted more photos from First Street in Hermann.  These photos were taken this afternoon just prior to a period of heavy freezing rain, sleet and thunder.  The Winter Storm Warning has been changed to a Blizzard Warning for Gasconade County, Montgomery County and Warren County.

Our weather spotters have noticed that the overhead telephone lines, cable TV lines and electric power lines throughout Hermann are coate with ice.  As the thickness of the ice coating on these overhead lines increases and as wind gusts build to 35-40 mph, there is a definite possibility of telephone, cable TV and electric power outages.  Make preparations should you be forced to deal with any such outage.

The Winter Storm Warning for Gasconade County, Montgomery County and Warren County has been upgraded to a Blizzard Warning!  Make preparations now!  This is going to be the BIG ONE!

A Blizzard Warning is an advisory issued by the National Weather Service of the United States which means sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 mph / 15 m/s or greater with heavy snow is forecast for a period of 3 hours or more. A blizzard tends to reduce visibilities to 1/4 of a mile (400 m) or less. A Severe Blizzard Warning is a variety issued is some cases of winds above 45 mph / 20 m/s and temperatures below 10°F/-12°C. Many local weather offices will activate the Emergency Alert System and broadcast the alarm tone on relevant NOAA Weather Radio stations for both varieties of warning.

Charlie and Winston have both called in reporting heavy rain and loud thunder during this hour.  I also heard the thunder while seated at my desk.  The last time I heard thunder during a winter storm, we had 23 inches of snow.  That was when I was living in Cape Girardeau.  The warning signs for a MONSTER STORM are ominously apparent!

The stores are still open.  Get extra food, cigars and booze now!  Berlener's Pharmacy is still open.  Get your drug prescriptions filled now while you can!  The convenience stores are still open.  Fill up your fuel tanks while you can!

I was at Orscheln earlier.  They are now out of snow melt!

I drove downtown to have lunch with Charlie Farquharson and Winton Weatherly.  The city streets are in good condition at this time, but conditions will deteriorate through the evening hours.  We had cheeseburgers, french fries and beer at the Barrel Bar and Grill.  Everyone in the place wanted to talk to us about the weather forecast.

Cletus Snow and Fred, our weather spotters down in Owensville, have called in to inform us that Owensville is now out of portable generators and kerosene for kerosene heaters.  These items have been flying off the shelves.  Cletus and Fred report that salt and snow melt are still available.  No food outages have been reported in the Owensville area.  Owensville is receiving a light drizzle of freezing rain at this hour.

Conditions in Hermann remain the same.  Light freezing rain.  The parking lots and sidewalks are "slicker than snot".  Charlie and Winston urge you to stay off them!  Streets in the city are still passable, due to the fine efforts of MoDOT and the Hermann Street Department.  If you must get out, use extreme CAUTION!

Storm Team weather spotter Aunt Nellie from Redbird has called in to report freezing drizzle in Redbird.  Aunt Nellie reckons that the freezing drizzle started shortly after 8 a.m.  Redbird is in the southern most part of Gasconade County and is represented by Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry D. Lairmore.  Aunt Nellie says Commissioner Lairmore has never asked for her input about anything concerning the operation of Gasconade County.

Weather spotters, Charlie Farquharson and Winston Weatherly, report that freezing rain began falling in Hermann Ward 1 and Ward 2 shortly after our 8 a.m. Storm Team report.  It looks like freezing rain has fallen throught the entire metropolitan area of Hermann.

Currently the freezing rain has subsided a bit, but we we are expecting more of it before this part of the MONSTER STORM is over

CURRENT CONDITIONS:  29 F, wet, cold and windy!

"Good morning, Frank!  This is trained weather spotter, Charlie Farquharson, reporting from the Kaffee House on East First Street.  Great coffee down here, Frank!  Right now we have a temperture of 30 F.  The precipitation has not yet begun to fall.  It is cold, dry and windy!"

When God the Father sent his only Son to earth on a rescue mission, he gave to us generously-the best that he had! We too are to live generous lives, being “rich in good deeds”. By sharing what God has given us for his glory, we can store away treasures in heaven. Life that is truly life is a life lived giving and displaying God’s infinite generosity to the world. This is what we were created to do!

Editorial Comment: The Abnormal Psychology of Angry "Crank" Commenters

"Crank" is a pejorative term used for a person who unshakably holds a belief that most of his or her contemporaries consider to be false.  A "cranky" belief is so wildly at variance with commonly accepted belief as to be ludicrous. Cranks characteristically dismiss all evidence or arguments which contradict their own unconventional beliefs, making rational debate an often futile task.

Common synonyms for "crank" include crackpot and kook. A crank differs from a fanatic in that the subject of the fanatic's obsession is either not necessarily widely regarded as wrong or not necessarily a "fringe" belief. Similarly, the word quack is reserved for someone who promotes a medical remedy or practice that is widely considered to be ineffective; this term however does not imply any deep belief in the idea or product they are attempting to sell. Crank may also refer to an ill-tempered individual or one who is in a bad mood.

The second book of the philosopher and popular author Martin Gardner was a study of crank beliefs, Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science. More recently, the mathematician Underwood Dudley has written a series of books on mathematical cranks, including The Trisectors, Mathematical Cranks, and Numerology: Or, What Pythagoras Wrought. And in a 1992 UseNet post, the mathematician John Baez humorously proposed a "checklist", the Crackpot index, intended to "diagnose" cranky beliefs regarding contemporary physics.

According to these authors, virtually universal characteristics of cranks include:

1. Cranks overestimate their own knowledge and ability, and underestimate that of acknowledged experts.
2. Cranks insist that their alleged discoveries are urgently important.
3. Cranks rarely, if ever, acknowledge any error, no matter how trivial.
4. Cranks love to talk about their own beliefs, often in inappropriate social situations, but they tend to be bad listeners, and often appear to be uninterested in anyone else's experience or opinions.

I have found the Wikipedia information about "cranks" to be most helpful.  Sometimes we get "cranky" commenters here at Hermann Hearsay.  It's not that often, but it does happen from time to time.  When it does happen, it can be most discouraging to my junior staff writers.  Many times, I have had to step in to address the "cranky" commenter myself.  When I do, it has not always gone well even though I have tried to be polite and civil with the complaining person.

It seems to me that cranks have no interest in learning about the subject or person which they harshly criticize.  They simply have no respect for listening to a differing point of view. 

They will not read books (or any other kind of written material) on the topic they argue.  To do so would require them to expend some time and energy.  They will not talk to the individual they criticize and smear in an effort to learn his/her side of the story. Their motivation is only to speak (most often loudly) and be heard.

When cranks get into a defensive mode, I think it helps them more in the long run to be ignored.  I am currently ignoring one such crank who has come to this site repeatedly to accuse an innocent man of wrongdoing.  This crank no longer cares whether or not he has his facts correct.  He simply seeks to maliciously smear an innocent man and use the good name of Hermann Hearsay to help him do it.  That's why I am ignoring him!

Hermann Hearsay does not tolerate angry cranks, and we will NEVER allow them to use our blog site to publish and amplify maliciously false accusations about innocent people.

The longer debates with cranks rage on in the Comment Section of our blog site the more likely it is for the crank to write or imply any one or more of the following:

1. They are a genius on the matter under debate, a genius on the scale of Albert Einstein.
2. My staff writers who've researched the topic they have written about or the matter which the crank raises in a comment  are ignorant and don't have the gift of seeing the "real" truth and are unwilling to perform investigative due diligence. 
3. My staff writers and I are or ought be afraid of them for some reason or another.
4. They (and others) are watching me and my writers, implying that we should be concerned for our own physical safety.
5. And so on to include cursing, threats and intimidation of every kind imaginable.

Obviously, the more they say stuff like this the less likely they are to have an "oops, I was wrong" moment.  Consequently, I think elongated debates reinforce their resistance to being educated in the facts of the matter which they haven choosen to argue.

Thus, it often seems that the only choice which I am left with is to just ignore them.
