The LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: “‘ “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.”‘  ~ Numbers 6:22-26

This famous blessing is still used today in many churches and synagogues. Notice that this blessing does not come from Moses, but from Lord. And what does God want His people to know? That God wants to bless us and keep us. That he wants us to know Him so that we will understand that He is gracious and filled with peace. Is this your view of God? If not, then take the time to think about this blessing then pray this over your life and your household today!

Letter To The Editor: Barry Schmelly says ... "Unity is much over-rated!"

We're receiving a lot of "Letters To The Editor" regarding the subject of "County Unity".  Seems that a lot of people of have an opinion on this controversial subject.  Here's a letter from one of our FREE subscribers, Barry Schmelly.  Mr. Schmelly lives in Hermann.

Dear Mr. Olsun,

A number of Gasconade County polticians and media personalities have called for "UNITY" in Gasconade County.  It's a complete puzzlement to me as to what the hell they are talking about!  They probably don't know themselves!  In fact, I think they are just mouthing things they have heard others say and haven't really considered the implications.

Personally, I could care less whether we have "UNITY" in this county or not!  "UNITY" in and of itself is over-rated!  The things I want for the county are:

• openness and transparency in government,
• professionalism and accountability in government,
• honesty and integrity in government,
• fiscal responsibility in all government departments, and
• responsiveness to the voters ... all voters.

In my experience, it is sometimes necessary to "ruffle a few feathers" in order to accomplish these worthwhile objectves.  And if "feathers do get ruffled", so be it!  That's just fine and dandy as far as I'm concerned.

I will always support and back elected officials who "make waves" and "ruffle feathers" for these are the elected officials who make a difference.  These are the elected officials who properly and effectively repesent the constituencies who elected them to a position of public trust in the first place.

Feel free to publish my letter if you wish.  If not, that's OK too!

One of my all-time favorite movies is "Honeysuckle Rose" (1980) starring Willie Nelson, Slim Pickens, Dyan Cannon and Amy Irving.  There are some hilarious scenes in the movie when Garland Ramsey (played by Slim Pickens) travels down to Mexico to retrieve band leader Buck Bonham (played by Willie Nelson).  Please excuse the salty language .....

Many times we talk about our experience with God in terms of our decision. But the Bible places that moment in a rich context – we were brought to that point of decision by the will of God! There is a mystery here: we decided to follow Jesus because God gave us the right to decide. In no way could we create that right ourselves! This places us squarely dependent upon the God from whom all blessings flow. That dependence positions us as a child, and therefore an heir, to all that our heavenly Father has to give us.

Elmer Fudd Endorses A. E. Newman And Calls For COUNTY UNITY

Speaking today from his farm near Swiss, Elmer Fudd enthusiastically endorsed A. E. Newman of Bland for the office of Southern District Associate Commissioner of Gasconade County.  Quoting Fudd ..... "A. E. Newman represents the kind of change we need in Gasconade County!  Newman will work toward COUNTY UNITY.  He will work cooperatively with Northern District Associate Commissioner Matt Penning to get some things done that we need to get done in this county.  And Newman will keep his nose clean!  He will never get sued, and he will never be the target of ethics complaints!"

Mr. Fudd reminded us that he will be offering his world famous "Elmer Fudd's Wabbit Stew" once again this fall.  Assuming Elmer has some success shooting wabbits when the wabbit season opens, he will begin taking orders on November 15th

In a Letter to the Editor received this morning, A. E. Newman of Bland calls for COUNTY UNITY.  Newman's letter is reproduced hereinbelow:

Dear Editor,

I have observed with great interest all the calls for "county unity".  It seems to be the thing to do by politicians of all stripes. 

But do they actually understand what they are asking for?  I wonder!

IF they are calling for Northern District Associate Commissioner Penning to cease and desist from pointing out improper and illegal actions of other Gasconade County officials, then count me out of that kind of "county unity".  I think improper and illegal actions of county officials should be confronted!

IF they are calling for Northern District Associate Commissioner Penning to cease and desist from pointing out wasteful and inefficient spending by departments of Gasconade County, then count me out of that kind of "county unity".  I think wasteful and inefficient spending should ALWAYS be confronted!

IF they are calling for the Mayor of Hermann Larry Miskel to shut up and remain silent when he is not properly notified that the Governor of Missouri will be visiting the city which he has been elected to represent, then count me out of that kind of "county unity".  I agree with Mayor Miskel that it IS proper protocol and just common courtesy to notify the mayor of any city in the county when a high ranking government official will be visiting that city.  The Mayor was justified in voicing his objections for not being notified of the recent visit of Governor Jay Nixon to Hermann.  Those who seek to categorize his recent objections as improper are idiots!

IF they are calling for citizens of the county to cease and desist from filing a formal complaint with the Missouri Ethics Commission if and when they believe a county official has done something unethical in the conduct of their official duties, then count me out of that kind of "county unity".  The Missouri Ethics Commission is tasked with investigating legitimate ethics complaints.  Anyone who seeks to intimidate a citizen of this county and dissuade them from filing a formal complaint against a government official who has potentially acted unethically is not a person I can respect.

Yes, we do need COUNTY UNITY, but not the type of unity that some having been advocating!  We need to unite together as citizens of Gasconade County in our common demands for:

• transparency in government,
• accountability in government,
• honesty in government,
• professionalism in government, and
• efficiency in government.

A couple weekends ago, flash flooding occurred along Frene Creek.  Campers at the Harold Vohs Campground in the lower Hermann City Park were forced to quickly evacuate.  Questions were raised as to whether campers are provided "sufficient warning" about the potential for sudden flash flooding.  I found this sign at the campground.  The question is:  "Is this one sign sufficient for the purpose of providing adequate warning to campers?"

I've lost track of all the "calls for COUNTY UNITY"!  There have been a bunch of 'em!

Let's see if I can remember them all?  There was Jeff Noedel, Publisher of CNL.  There was Jerry Lairmore, Southern District Associate Commissioner.  There was Hank Vonk, CNL Contributing Writer and Owner/Operator of Enchanted Ridge Ranch near Owensville.  I recall that Brian Chorley, a Hermann Alderman, has long pleaded for COUNTY UNTY.  I recall that Owensville Alderman John Kamler added his voice to the "call for UNITY" at the last county commission meeting held in Owensville.  Just this week, Randy Esphorst, the Sheriff of Gasconade County, sent a letter to the editor at CNL calling for COUNTY UNITY.  I'm sure there have been others, but I just can't remember them all at this me.

This "Cystal Ball News Report", a unique feature at Hermann Hearsay, is about foretelling WHO will be next person(s) to call for UNITY in Gasconade County.  It's easy to report who has called for UNITY minutes after the fact.  It's easy to publish letters to the editor from those who call for UNITY.

Hermann Hearsay will now tell you WHO will be calling for COUNTY UNITY in the very near future.  Our predictions which follow have a 90% certainty of occurring before 12/31/2010:

All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth.  ~ Colossians 1:6b

Paul describes the gospel as a living entity. Notice that it is the gospel that is bearing fruit and growing. Once people really understand the good news, the gospel has a life of it’s own that expands in surprising ways. Just ask the underground church in China or the new expressions of faith that are appearing all over America. In a day when mainline churches are declining, the gospel is going forward in dynamic new ways. We can’t contain it nor should we. When we feel spiritually dry and worn out, we need to come back to the gospel. Have you reminded yourself of God’s grace in all its truth today?
