April 14th is the anniversary of Lincoln being shot by John Wilkes Booth. April 14th, 1865 was Good Friday.
Lee had surrendered on April 9th so it seemed the Civil War was over. The prevailing feeling was jubilant. The night before the shooting, April 13th, candles burned in the windows of most public buildings and private homes. Newspapers described Washington. D.C. as "all ablaze with glory."
The shooting happened around 10 PM April 14th and Lincoln died April 15th around 7:22 AM.
Booth's first plan, set for March, 1865 was to kidnap Lincoln as he returned from a play at Campbell Hospital, take him to Richmond, and ransom him back to the Union in return for ending the Civil War. Booth with a half-dozen fellow conspirators were ready to act on that plan but Lincoln's plans changed and he never appeared where they waited in ambush.
Booth's next hope was to buy the South some time to rally by throwing the Government into disarray. This plan actually called for three simultaneous assassinations. Booth assigned Lincoln to himself, Gearge A. Atzerodt was to eliminate Vice President Johnson, and Lewis T. Powell was to murder Secretary of State Seward.
Atzerodt took a room in the hotel where Johnson was staying but lost his nerve and never attcked the Vice President.
Powell entered Seward's home on the pretext of having medicine for him and seriously wounded Seward (and others) but is forced to flee without killing Seward.
Seward survived and is best remembered today for an exceptionally good deal he made in 1867 while serving under Andrew Johnson. Seward's deal was so unappreciated in his day that it was called Seward's Folly--but today we regard the purchase of Alaska from Russia (for $7.2 Million or about 2 cents per acre) as a masterstroke.
Booth is cornered in a barn and dies of a gun shot wound on April 26th. Atzerodt, Powell, and others were hanged on July 7, 1865. Atzerodt's last words were "May we meet in another world."

On April 14, 1865, Lewis Powell, an associate of John Wilkes Booth, attempted to assassinate Seward, the same night that Abraham Lincoln was shot. Powell gained access to Seward's home by telling a servant, William Bell, that he was delivering medicine for Seward, who was recovering from a recent carriage accident on April 5, 1865. Powell started up the stairs when then confronted by one of Seward's sons, Frederick. He told the intruder that his father was asleep and Powell began to start down the stairs, but suddenly swung around and pointed a gun at Frederick's head. After the gun jammed, Powell panicked, then repeatedly struck Frederick over the head with the pistol, leaving Frederick in critical condition on the floor.
Powell then burst into William Seward's bedroom with a knife and stabbed him several times in the face and neck. Powell also attacked and injured another son (Augustus), a soldier and nurse (Sgt. George Robinson) who had been assigned to stay with Seward, and a messenger (Emerick Hansell) who arrived just as Powell was escaping.[19] Luckily all five men that were injured that night survived, although Seward Sr. would carry the facial scars from the attack through his remaining life. The events of that night took their toll on his wife, Frances, who died June 1865 from the stress of almost losing her husband. Then his daughter Fanny died of tuberculosis in October 1866.
Powell was captured the next day and was executed on July 7, 1865, along with David Herold, George Atzerodt, and Mary Surratt, three other conspirators in the Lincoln assassination.
Although it took Seward several months to recover from his wounds, he emerged as a major force in the administration of the new president, Andrew Johnson, frequently defending his more moderate reconciliation policies towards the South, to the point of enraging Radical Republicans who had once regarded Seward as their ally.
In the fall of 1866, Seward joined Johnson, as well as Ulysses S. Grant and the young General George Armstrong Custer, along with several other administration figures, on the president's ill-fated "Swing Around the Circle" campaign trip.
At one point Seward became so ill, probably from cholera, that he was sent back to Washington in a special car. Both Johnson and Grant, as well as several members of the Seward family, thought the Secretary was near death. But as with his April 1865 stabbing, Seward surprised many by making a good recovery.

In this passage of Revelations, the church of Ephesus worked hard at keeping their church safe from false teachers. They were serious about the truth of Scripture. But this is not enough. In their zeal for truth, they had lost their love for Christ. What was true in the first Century is true today as well. We can do all of the right things for the right reasons, yet not have the right heart. This devolves into churches that are technically correct, yet spiritually wrong. When we are willing to allow love to govern our usage of truth, then our lampstand is the light of Jesus to those around us.

Then the LORD said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts- – Exodus 31:1-3 (NIV)
What is interesting about Bezalel is that he was filled with the Spirit of God to build the tabernacle. When we think of people filled with the Spirit, does a builder come across your mind? How about an accountant? A doctor? A housewife? When we see the ramifications of Bezalel, we see that God’s anointing is not just for pastors on Sunday services or music, but God’s empowerment was meant for all areas of life. Find out what you are uniquely empowered by God to do, then do it with all your might.

- Gas prices are soaring nationwide. Hermann is no exception. Today the price of regular gasoline at the Hermann Fuel Mart is $3.749 per gallon.
- The St. Louis Cardinals finally broke out of their hitting slump last night as they defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks by a score of 8-2. The boys down at the Sharp Corner Tavern report that Roho Efline cussed a blue streak!

Washington, DC -- Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that it has filed two Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuits against the Obama Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to obtain records detailing the Obama administration's alleged plan to grant legal status to illegal aliens without going through Congress, a strategy commonly known as "stealth amnesty." Specifically, Judicial Watch is investigating an alleged plan by the Obama administration to suspend deportations of illegal aliens who are in the country unlawfully ( Judicial Watch v. US Department of Homeland Security (No. 11-604) and Judicial Watch v. US Department of Homeland Security (No. 11-606).
On July 2, 2010, Judicial Watch sent a FOIA request to DHS seeking the following information: “Any and all records of communications between the Department of Homeland Security and any of the following entities, concerning "deferred action" or "parole" to suspend removal proceedings against a particular individual or group of individuals for a specific timeframe; as well as records of communications concerning "selective reprieve" to the segment of the population holding expired visas: The White House; The Executive Office of the President; Any third parties.” Judicial Watch sought internal DHS communications regarding "deferred action or parole" as well.
On August 30, 2010, Judicial Watch submitted a FOIA request to DHS seeking the following information:
Any and all records of, and/or records concerning, Department of Homeland Security briefings regarding a systematic review of pending immigration cases against suspected illegal immigrants in Houston, Texas.
Any and all records of general guidelines issued to Department of Homeland Security attorneys, allowing dismissal of pending immigration cases.
Any and all records detailing the determination and implementation of a systematic review of pending immigration cases against suspected illegal immigrants in Houston, Texas.
Any and all correspondence with non-governmental organizations…concerning the process for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to give consideration of possible dismissal of pending immigration cases.
DHS acknowledged receipt of Judicial Watch's FOIA requests. However, to date, the agency has failed to provide responsive documents. DHS has not indicated when a response will be forthcoming. In both cases, DHS has failed to respond in the statutory allotted timeframe precipitating Judicial Watch’s lawsuits. (Reporting by The Associated Press suggests that DHS political appointees have improperly delayed FOIA requests on politically sensitive topics.)
The Obama administration has been heavily criticized for their alleged plan to bypass Congress and enact "stealth amnesty." In June 2010, the press uncovered a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service "draft" memo that outlined ways to grant legalization to illegal aliens without going through Congress.
The August 24, 2010, edition of The Houston Chronicle reported the government had already put one such plan into action: “The Department of Homeland Security is systematically reviewing thousands of pending immigration cases and moving to dismiss those filed against suspected illegal immigrants who have no serious criminal records…Culling the immigration court system dockets of noncriminals started in earnest in Houston about a month ago and has stunned local immigration attorneys, who have reported coming to court anticipating clients' deportations only to learn that the government was dismissing the cases.”
Despite evidence to the contrary, Obama claimed on Monday, March 28, 2011, that he does not have a plan in place to suspend deportations. "There are enough laws on the books by Congress that are very clear in terms of how we have to enforce our immigration system that for me to simply, through executive order, ignore those congressional mandates would not conform with my appropriate role as president," Obama said.
"President Obama may deny he has a plan to suspend deportations but the experience of immigration attorneys in Houston suggests otherwise. That's why it's critical that Homeland Security follows the open records FOIA law and turns over these records. The American people need to know if the Obama administration has decided to flout our immigration laws and enact stealth amnesty for illegal aliens who are unlawfully here in the United States. The stonewalling by the 'transparent' Obama administration suggests it has something to hide," stated Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton.
