Anticipating rapid growth during 2011 and 2012 caused by a planned increase in website content and stepped-up marketing efforts, Hermann Hearsay today announced the purchase of new high-powered Toshiba laptops for our entire staff.  Each computer will have the new Microsoft Windows 7 operating system, the latest version of Intel processor chips, cutting edge McAfee security protection, limitless memory, etc.  You name it, our computers are going to have it!  We're also going to install invasive "cooking" cleaning software from CCleaner.com on each machine as well as the latest "troll tracking" software available from StatCounter.com.  "Cookie Monsters", trolls and hackers beware!  We are going to protect our company owned computers and bloog sites, and we are going to advise our loyal readers what they can do to protect their personally owned computers from over-zealous and misguided competitors!

Riddle Of The Day - "Bags and Beads" - Wednesday, 2/23/2011

I hadn't posted a riddle in many days when a loyal reader called to say that she missed the riddles.  She enjoys the challenge of solving puzzles and riddles.  So, as long as I have just one reader who enjoys the daily riddles, I will continue to publish them.

This riddle is dedicated to our good friend, Sharon.  And it's a really tough one!  The solution to it is very ingenious!  Sharon, if you solve it, let me know!

"Bags and Beads"

You are given 5 bags. There are 10 beads in each of the bags. In four of the bags, the beads each weigh 10 grams. In the remaining bag, each bead weighs only 9 grams. All the bags and beads look identical. You must find out which bag has the lighter beads. The problem is that all the bags look identical and all the beads look identical. You can use a scale, but it has to be a single-tray scale, not a two-tray balance scale. Also, you may use the scale only once. How can you find out which bag has the lighter beads?

(For Solution see Comment Section.)

Bible Verse Of The Day - Galatians 1:13-16 - Wednesday, 2/23/2011

Published by Lois Lame, Assistant Editor

Post:  1,734

For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man, – Galatians 1:13-16

As Paul is recounting his past as a Christian bounty hunter he turns everything on its head by verse 15. He talks of the God who set him apart from his birth! How can this be? Paul is looking at his history now from a new lens: the power of the cross. The shame of his past now becomes the qualifier for his future. The gospel gives us a new perspective on our yesterdays, which creates the roadmap for our tomorrows.

Editorial Comment - Things That Bother Me About Some Internet Websites

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, Editor

Date:  2/22/2011
Post:  1,733

I've learned a lot about the internet, computers and hosting a website since I've worked here at Hermann Hearsay.  Some of the things I've learned bother me.

For instance, did you know that some websites place very intrusive "tracking cookies" on your personal computer when you visit their site.  This bothers me?  Why are they attaching their intrusive "tracking cookies"?  What do they want to know about you and me and our web-surfing patterns?  What other personal information are they trying to surreptitiously extract from our computers?  What do they do with our information?  Are they using our personal information for some sinister illegal purpose?  Are they selling our personal information to third parties?  Who are these third parties?  Why are they willing to pay for our personal information?  Is this how unscrupulous website operators really make their money as opposed to selling paid advertisements and/or paid subscriptions for their website?  Do they fully disclose what they are doing with it?  It makes me wonder, and well, it bothers me.

Have you noticed that some websites require you to "register" with them in order to gain FREE or PAID access to their site?  Why do they want your name, address, email address, telephone number and other personal information?  How many websites have you "registered" on in order to gain FREE or PAID access?  Do you trust the website and its operators?  Have you read their "Terms and Conditions"?  What are the risks and rewards associated with revealing personal information to websites on the internet?

Did you know that some website operators pay $500 per year for an invasive and intrusive software program called 'Spiral 16'?  I understand that this particular software has the ability to "mine" all sorts of information about a website.  For example, when this software is attached to a website, the owner of the software can obtain lots of information about the website's visitors and readers.  Information like IP addresses, ISPs, internet surfing patterns, and other things.

There are basically three ways a website operator can make money:
  1. charge a subscription fee for accessing all portions of their website,
  2. charge advertisers to place "banner ads" on their site much the same way as newspapers charge for their display and classified ads, and
  3. gather and sell your personal information to third parties.
I want you to think about the websites you are visiting.  Can you trust them?  Have they fully and clearly disclosed their "Terms and Conditions"?  Do you understand them?

The "Terms and Conditions" here at Hermann Hearsay are very simple.  We CURRENTLY DO NOT:
  1. charge a subscription fee for accessing all portions of OUR website,
  2. charge advertisers to place "banner ads" on their site much the same way as newspapers charge for their display and classified ads, and
  3. gather and sell your personal information to third parties.
Because I have experienced some problems with websites in this regard, I plan to share further information with our readers in future postings.  I will give you specifics, and I will name names.

Bible Verse Of The Day - Isaiah 35: 3-4 - Tuesday, 2/22/2011

Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” – Isaiah 35: 3-4

In the midst of a prior description of a wasteland and a coming prophecy of war and sickness, Isaiah speaks words of encouragement to the people of God. This still speaks to us today. You may look at your past and see a wasted life. You may look toward the future and all you see is doom. But take hold of another reality in the midst of your suffering: God will come to save you! So don’t give up. Be strong. Do not fear. God was faithful in Isaiah’s day, He will be faithful today.

Hermann Hearsay Interviews A. E. Newman (Part 3)

Published by Clark Kant, Contributing Writer and Investigative Blogger

A. E. Newman
Candidate for Southern District Associate
Commissioner of Gasconade County
Date: 2/16/2011
Post: 1,727

Part 1 of my interview may be found by clicking on A. E. Newman Interview (Part 1) .  And Part 2 may be found by clicking on A. E. Newman Interview (Part 2) .

Here is the transcript from Part 3 of the interview with A. E. Newman which took place Saturday morning, 2/12/2011, at Newman's kitchen table in Bland, MO .....

Kant:  Mr. Newman, let's talk about the issue which I know is most near and dear to your heart.  And that is the issue of unemployment in Gasconade County.  The numbers from the BLS are not yet out for January, but most people are expecting that the official unemployment rate for Gasconade County will come in right around 10%.
Newman:  Isn't that terrible, Clark?!  Absolutely horrendous!  And we have such proud, skilled and hard-working people in our county!  We have to get this situation fixed and fixed for good!  We've got to bring quality industry and business operations to Gasconade County!
Kant:  I know that you and your wife have reached out to the unemployed and homeless down in the southern district by hosting some breakfast meetings with them at your home.  Other than that what do you plan to do, Mr. Newman?
Newman:  IF elected, I plan to "shake things up" with the Gasconade County IDA (Industrial Development Authority) and the GVEZ (Gasconade Valley Enterprise Zone).  As you probably know, my opponent, incumbent Jerry D. Lairmore, has been sitting as a member of these groups for a number of years representing the Gasconade County Commissioners.  I have heard him talk a lot in County Commission Meetings about attending these meetings.  I have read the minutes of County Commission Meetings going back about three years now.  In these minutes, you can find Commissioner Lairmore talking about attending IDA and GVEZ meetings, but I believe I am correct in saying that Mr. Lairmore has accomplished very little of any real substance.  I can't remember one business which Lairmore has brought to Gasconade County.  I can't remember him helping an existing business expand and produce more good-paying jobs for the county.  Just a lot of hot air!  I wonder who Commissioner Lairmore is really representing as a member of the Gasconade County IDA and the GVEZ?  Is he representing the workers of Gasconade County who need good-paying jobs with company provided health insurance or is he representing a few business owners who are greedy and short-sighted in terms of wanting to maintain a low wage and salary structure in Gasconade County for their own benefit?  That's what I'm wondering!  And I'm aiming to find out about it too!
Kant:  How are you gonna do that, Mr.  Newman?
Newman:  I'll be showing up at the IDA and GVEZ meetings as a visitor and observer.  I want to get educated about the mission of these groups, the membership of these groups, what they have accomplished, what they haven't accomplished and their plans for the future.  I want to personally assess what needs to be done to bring business and jobs to Gasconade County.
Kant:  That sounds good for starters, but what else do you plan to do, Mr. Newman?
Newman:  I'm going to find out what my opponent has been doing as a member of these two groups.  I'm going to find out if he is fighting to bring business and jobs to Gasconade County, or if he is just giving "lip service" to the chronic needs of our county!  I'm going to find out who he is representing by sitting on the boards of these groups ... the workers of Gasconade County ... or just a few "fat cat" friends.  I'm going to find out if our county and regional industrial development groups are consulting with marketing professionals.  I'm going to find out if they are putting together professional presentations and brochures which can be used to attract quality employers to our county.  I'm going to find out if and how they are reaching out to quality businesses directly, through various political connections and through various economic development agencies at the state level.  I'm going to ask if they'd consider adding one unemployed worker from the southern end of the county and one from the northern end of the county to their boards.  I think we need to listen to the voice of the people who are being impacted by our county's high rate of unemployment!
Kant:  Sounds like you've been really thinking about this issue!
Newman:  I suspect and I dare say that  I've been thinking about this issue more than my opponent!  And if I find that my suspicions are indeed confirmed, then that is a very sad state of affairs for the honest and hard-working people of Gasconade County!
Kant:  What else can be done to bring good-paying jobs to our county?
Newman:  We must be progressive and forward-thinking about our county's infrastructure and county services.  Quality companies will not want to locate an industrial plant, a warehouse or any other kind of large business operation in our county if our county leaders are constantly fighting and failing to move the county ahead.  That's why Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore needs to be replaced!  I'm convinced Mr. Lairmore spends a great deal of his waking hours trying to figure out how he can obstruct what Commissioner Penning of the Northern District wants to accpmplish.  Lairmore conspires with others to bring information, rumor and innuendo into County Commission meetings when such things have absolutely no place in the County Commission meetings.  Presiding Commissioner Jost should cut off such inappropriate rumor mongering, but he has demonstrated that he has been unwilling to conduct a professional meeting.  If elected, I pledge to work with Commissioner Penning to accomplish positive things for both ends of our county.  I will try to work with Presiding Commissioner Jost, but I will also "all a spade a spade".  I expect Mr. Jost to set the appropriate priorities for the county, lead our meetings efficiently and effectively and cut off political rumor "mongering" as was seen in a recent Commission meeting when Commissioner Lairmore and a former commissioner teamed up in a sleazy, unprofessional attempt to smear Commissioner Penning by innuendo .
Kant:  Well, we're just about out of time, Mr. Newman.  I know you and your wife are planning to drive up to Columbia to visit your son today.
Newman:  Yeah, I guess I'm getting a bit long-winded, Clark!  It's been a pleasure talking with you today!  'Hope we can do it again in the future!
Kant:  That would be just swell!  I know you'll be getting your campaign signs made up this spring.  Perhaps we can get together when you get your first sign back from the printer?
Newman:  Clark, my signs are gonna be hand-painted on some old, discarded lumber.  I'm going for the rustic, country look.  I plan to hire some of the unemployed people here in the Bland area to help me.  I'm gonna put my actions where my mouth is!

"This whole [Egyptian] revolution was started by a Facebook page. So Mubarak wasn't so much as deposed as de-friended."  ~ Bill Maher (2/14/2011)

Quote Of The Day - A. E. Newman Re. Civility In County Government - Wednesday, 2/16/2011

Published by Lois Lame, Assistant Editor

A. E. Newman
Candidate for Southern District Associate
Commissioner of Gasconade County
 Date:  2/16/2011

"First of all, I would restore civility within the County Commission.  We would have rules of decorum!  If one Commissioner calls another Commissioner a "lieing son-of-a-bitch", he would be assessed a substantial fine.  I'm thinking a $500 fine.  And that fine would be deducted from his next month's pay check.  If a Commissioner calls a citizen a "jackass", whether he/she be in attendance at a commission meeting or not, that Commissioner would be assessed a $500 fine, he would be required to issue a public statement of apology which the County Clerk would dutifully record in the Commission Meeting Minutes, and he would also be required to attend "Anger Management Training".  ~ A. E. Newman, 2/15/2011

Poll Closed - What will the price per gallon of regular gasoline be on Memorial Day?

Our most recent poll is now closed.

The poll question was:

"The price of regular gasoline was $2.95 per gallon in Hermann on Monday, 2/7/2011. What will the price per gallon be on Memorial Day?"

The responses we received were as follows:

  • $2.95 1 (10%)
  • $3.25 1 (10%)
  • $3.50 3 (30%)
  • $3.75 0 (0%)
  • $4.00 1 (10%)
  • $4.25 1 (10%)
  • $4.50 0 (0%)
  • $4.75 3 (30%)
  • $5.00 0 (0%)
Note that one our readers, "Mike", astutely pointed out that we had failed to offer a choice below the price of regular gas on 2/7.  We apologize for that.  I suppose there is a chance (albeit low) that the price of gas on Memorial Day could be lower than it was on 2/7.  "Mike", I'm hoping for that, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it!
