A new poll is now open.  You are welcome to enter your vote at the polling location in the far right column of the home page.

The poll question is:

"Now that the GCCS has voted to transfer the Roethli properties to Gasconade County, thereby eliminating that excuse for NOT constructing the courthouse emergency access road, what new excuses will Commissioners Jost and Lairmore offer for NOT moving ahead?"

The answers which may be selected are as follows:
  • Starting road construction in the winter is not a good idea.
  • The county road department employees cannot be freed up for this project due to other priorities.
  • The county's budget is tight and money is not available at this time.
  • The state will not grant a permit to construct the new entrance from Hwy. 100.
  • Missouri S&T engineering student, Horace Brown, has graduated and will not be available to manage the road construction project.
  • The Mayan calendar indicates the world will come to an end on 12/21/2012 rendering it unwise to begin construction until we know for sure that we will all be alive after that date.
  • Shot rock is very expensive. We need to pay off Commissioner Lairmore's and former Commissioner Aubuchon's legal bills first.
  • All of the above.
  • None of the above.
Please note that you may select multiple answers.

"For his part, Presiding Commissioner Ron Jost has also made smaller steps toward reconciliation.  Jost reluctantly agreed to sit on the GCCS Board as an ex-officio non-voting member.  Feeling snubbed by late invitations or invitations sent by e-mail (he says he's not an e-mail person), Jost skipped a number of GCCS meetings."  ~ Jeff Noedel, CNL Publisher, in 12/27/2010 report on GCCS meeting

Grow up Mr. Jost!  Don't be so hyper-sensitive!  Enter the 21st century of electronic communications ol' boy!  Don't throw a temper tantrum!  You weren't being snubbed!  You were being treated just like all other members of the GCCS Board of Directors!  Are you sooooo special (or inept) that you require your meeting invitations be delivered on a silver platter by Pony Express or some other special courier service?!

Missouri head football coach Gary Pinkel confirmed he is talking to MU officials about extending his coaching contract beyond Dec. 31, 2015.

“There’s just been some initial discussion on that,” Pinkel said.

“And, you know, I’m going to be at Missouri. There’s no question about that.”

When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, – Matthew 2:13-14

It’s interesting that the only way that Joseph hears God is through dreams. The first recorded dream is when God tells Joseph to take Mary, who was pregnant, as his bride. His obedience to the first dream positioned him to obey when the dreams had even greater significance. It seems that how we respond to God’s promptings today set the stage for how much God can entrust to us in the future. Are we willing to take steps of faith toward God today?

Gasconade County Courthouse Society Meeting - 12/27/2010

Last night, Monday, 12/27, the Board of Directors of the Gasconade County Courthouse Society (GCCS) met at 7 p.m. in the Gasconade County Courthouse at the request of GCCS President Dale Ridder.  The purpose of the board meeting was to discuss and consider the conveyance of property adjoining the Courthouse property and valued at approximately $700,000 to Gasconade County.  The property was purchased by and deeded to the GCCS by Joe and Judy Roetheli.  After a serious and deliberate discussion of the wishes of Mr. and Mrs. Roetheli and consideration of statements made on behalf of the Roethelis by former Hermann City Administrator Steve Mueller, the GCCS voted unanimously to initiate the legal work necessary to transfer ownership of the property to the county with local attorney Donald K. Althauser.  The motion to procede was made by GCCS Vice-President Olan Stemme and seconded by GCCS Secretary Sharon Meyer.  Presiding Commissioner Ron Jost (and ex-officio member of the GCCS) was in attendance at the meeting, and he agreed to accept the property on behalf of Gasconade County subject to a review of the legal instrument of conveyance and the property use stipulations therein by the county's attorney and a subsequent vote of approval by the Gasconade County Commission.

I was in attendance at the meeting.  The foregoing is a bried and factual accounting of the meeting discussion and outcomes, without inclusion of my own personal editorial comments and opinions.  The foregoing is "hard news" reporting.

We have in our community a person who represents himself as a "news publisher", a journalist of sorts.  He publishes his "news reports" at http://www.countynewslive.com/.  This "news publisher" went way beyond reporting the facts of this important story, including his own personal opinions, his own personal interpretations of past and present actions and motives of certain individuals in attendance at the meeting as well as his own personal observations of people attending the meeting, all of which have little or nothing to do with the facts of the story.  He seems to have used the occasion of the meeting to praise and promote certain individuals with whom he is known to be unusually "friendly" while taking gratuitous swipes at others with whom he is definitely not.

Take a look at this so-called "news report" (link provided hereinbelow) which was posted at CNL last night and evaluate it.  You be the judge!  Does it represent fair and balanced, factual "hard news" reporting?  Is it "hard news" coverage or is it an "op/ed" piece with an obvious personal agenda?   Is it a political promotion piece favoring persons with whom the publisher is known to be "friendly"?  Is it "muckraking", "excrement agitation", "sensationalism" for the purpose of increasing readership?  Again I say to our readers, read the CNL account of the meeting, and you be the judge!

Tip #1 For The New Year: Be responsible with your personal credit rating.

Published by Clark Kant, Contributing Writer and Investigative Reporter

How's your credit rating?  Are you managing your personal credit wisely?  Are you making timely payments on your home mortgage loan(s), your personal loan(s), your farm loan(s), your commercial loan(s) and/or your credit card(s)?  It's very important to be responsible with your credit.

If you aren't managing your credit responsibility, the bank or mortgage lender will foreclose on your mortgage loan and kick you out of your home.  The credit card company will cancel your credit line and take you to court to recover any balance you may owe them.  Don't risk these kind of consequences!  Pay attention to your credit obligations!

If you have a spotty credit record, get to work in 2011 repairing your damaged credit rating.  Resolve debt obligations currently in arrears.  Make your payments in a timely fashion.  Don't make purchases you really can't afford.  If you have a wallet or purse full of credit cards, start paring them down.  Consider using a debit card for personal convenience and to pay for purchases without credit.  If you're in trouble with your bank or mortgage lender, talk to them.  Let them know your situation.  See if you can restructure the terms of your loan.  If you're a farm operator or a small business, you must manage your credit responsibly OR you won't have a farm or business very long.  Be extremely prudent with farm and business loans so you don't get yourself into trouble.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” – Matthew 2:1-2

The Magi add a fascinating twist to the Christmas story. They were ancient astrologers who were regarded as the wise men of their time. They were not Jewish and this is the only time that they are mentioned in the Scripture. Their appearance and departure is mysterious and full of imagination. Notice the two groups who knew of the Christ: poor shepherds and respected wise men. Jews and Gentiles. God wanted to make it clear that the gospel was meant for rich and poor alike. It was meant for the smart and the uneducated. In other words, the gospel has been sent to the entire world.

Or most recent poll is now closed.

The poll question was as follows:

Which Gasconade County Commissioner recently spoke out against paying the increased health and dental insurance premium for county employees and ultimately abstained from voting on a motion to pay for the increased premium?

The answer choices and responses were:
  • Ron Jost - 0 (0.0%)
  • Jerry Lairmore - 18 (100%)
  • Matt Penning - 0 (0.0%)
Our readers unanimously chose Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore and they were absolutely correct.

Sad ain't it?!  An elected public official so eager toTAKE for himself (reimbursemen for personal legal fees), yet so very reluctant to GIVE to others!  You folks in the southern district of Gasconade County need to remember this when the November 2012 election rolls around!

A sweeping proposal aimed at cutting $4 trillion from the budget over the next decade failed to win enough votes Friday, December 3 to clear the commission President Obama entrusted to solve the nation's daunting fiscal problems.

The report from the 18-member deficit commission won the support of 11 members, short of the 14 necessary to be formally adopted. The vote does not preclude Congress from taking up any of the dozens of recommendations on the floor, but it virtually assures the proposals will not be considered as a single package.Co-Chairman of the deficit commission, Alan Simpson, a former Wyoming senator whose off-color comments got him in trouble several times over the course of the commission’s tenure, told reporters after the final meeting of the deficit  commission  he was going to “get the hell out of town and go sleep on the streets”.  He gave a parting shot to those who cast doubt on the process employed by the 18-member commission.

“Democracy’s in deep trouble when the two most disgusting bodies in America are politicians and journalists,” Simpson said.

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. – Luke 2:15-16

After the angel announced the coming of the Christ and a host of angels sang, there was the normal night sky. The shepherds could have just gone back to their business of watching sheep, but they determined to do something more profound: “Let’s go to Bethlehem…”. Many Christians have had a spiritual experience, but have they then gone to see what the Lord is doing in their generation? We have made the revealing of the Christ the end point, instead of the beginning of a journey. Now that you know that Christ is alive, what is God doing in your generation? Are you willing to hurry off to find it?
