Hello HH readers!  I'm filing this report from Metropolis, Illinois .... the "Home of Superman".  I'm enjoying the time off and visiting friends and relatives.  I plan to do a little gambling at our local riverboat casino here on the Ohio River.

Here's a little historical information about my hometown of Metroplis .....

Metropolis has played key roles in America's history. It is believed that Native Americans originally populated this area, taking advantage of its natural benefits. In 1757, Massac County began its documented history when the French raised Fort De L'Ascension during the French and Indian War. The fort was soon rebuilt and named Massaic in tribute to France's Minister of the Marine. The site was subjected to only one unsuccessful Cherokee attack during this time.

The French abandoned the fort after the war. When the British later arrived to take over the site, they discovered only burnt ruins; the fort had been destroyed by the Chickasaw. During the Revolutionary War, in 1778, George Rogers Clark and his regiment of "Long Knives" successfully entered Illinois at Massac Creek and ventured 100 miles (160 km) north to conquer Kaskaskia without firing a shot. This action won the entire Illinois territory for the State of Virginia and the still-growing United States.

In November 1803, Merriweather Lewis and William Clark camped at Fort Massac as they made preparations for their Corps of Discovery expedition to the west. George Drouillard was recruited during their stay at Fort Massac. General George Washington ordered the fort reconstructed in 1794. It served as a military post for the next 20 years. Damaged by the infamous New Madrid earthquake of 1811-12, Fort Massac was abandoned in 1814, and its timbers scavenged by local settlers, leaving behind little of its original construction.

In 1839 the town of Metropolis was platted, situated about a mile west of the fort grounds. One of the town founders was a merchant who transported goods on the Ohio River. He picked the site because it was high above the river, with the hope that it would become a major transportation hub. In 1843, the Illinois Legislature formed Massac County. The McCartney family became leaders in building the town.

Soldiers once again were encamped here during the early years of the Civil War, when the area was used as a training camp. The Daughters of the American Revolution rallied efforts in 1903 to purchase the 24 acres surrounding the historic location, and in 1908 Fort Massac was officially decreed as Illinois' first state park.

Prior to the American Civil War there was a proposal to establish a Western District of Columbia to include present day Metropolis and the nearby area of Kentucky. An 1850 map illustrates this proposal.

On January 21, 1972 DC Comics declared Metropolis "Hometown of Superman". On June 9, 1972 the Illinois State Legislature passed Resolution 572 that declared Metropolis the "Hometown of Superman," the comic book superhero who is based in the fictional city of Metropolis. Among the ways it celebrates the character are a large Superman statue in the city, a small Superman museum, and an annual Superman Celebration that is always held the second weekend in June. Also, it has a local newspaper, known as The Metropolis Planet, a name inspired by the newspaper in fictional Metropolis, The Daily Planet.  I began my career in journalism at The Metropolis Planet about 40 years ago.

Metropolis is also home to Harrah's Metropolis casino/hotel, a riverboat casino frequented by visitors from around the region, making tourism one of the city's largest industries. Metropolis is also the location of the Honeywell Uranium Hexafluoride Processing Facility, which converts milled uranium into uranium hexafluoride for nuclear reactors.

Hello everybody!  I arrived in Tampa last night.  It has been great to see my daughter and my grandpuppy.  My daughter is on her Christmas break at the University of South Florida in Tampa where she is a grad student.  We're planning all sorts of fun activities this week.  I'll tell you all about them later in the week.

It's very windy and chilly down here in Tampa.  The high today will only be in the low 50s.  But I guess I shouldn't complain since the Hermann area is really getting some frigid cold weather.

I think the first thing we're going to do today (since it's too cold to go to the beach) is to go car shopping.  My daughter's little Honda Civic has 113,000 miles on it.  Although it's still chugging along, we think it may be time to trade.  Her Honda has served her well.  She's had it since she first started driving in high school about 10 years ago.  Now she's got her eye on the Nissan Rogue and the Honda CR-V.

More later!

Folks, I always let our staff take a week of vacation during the holidays.  This year everyone wanted to take a week off before Christmas.  So we'll all be heading off in different direction next week to visit friends and family and just relax before the holidays.

Lois will be going down to Branson to visit with friends and take in some of the great shows they have down there at this time of the year.

Clark will be visiting friends and family in Metropolis, Illinois.

Dick is heading out today to spend a week with his daughter and grandpuppy down in Tampa, Florida.  He promises to post some photos of alligators!

Frank will be doing some hunting over in Warren County.  Don't know what Frank will be hunting, but I'm sure he'll have fun.

As for me, I'll be spending some time visiting friends and relatives in St. Louis.

If your holiday plans call for some traveling, and I don't get a chance to wish you Merry Christmas later, let me do so right now!  Merry Christmas folks!

For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. – Colossians 1:19-20

The apostle Paul states that Christ is the summation of the purposes of God. We see that God is bringing his creation back (reconciling) to Himself through Jesus. This has big ramifications! This means that all of history, all of the Scripture, and all of our lives are to be seen in light of Christ and His work on the cross. Do we see everything this way? Are we living in such a way that we are proclaiming God’s pleasure in Jesus to those around us?

The following YouTube clip was forwarded to me today by my good friend 'Poor Richard 2011', the publisher of www.HermannMoNews.blogspot.com.  This YouTube clip has had 15,986,000 hits since it was posted.  This actually occurred at a mall in Ontario on November 13, 2010.  Seeing and hearing what happened there lifted my spirits for the Christmas Season.  I hope it will lift your spirits as well and that it will be a small blessing to you this season.

Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of men? Will you try the patience of my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. – Isaiah 7:13-14

This prophecy of the Messiah was fulfilled in Jesus Christ when He was born to the virgin Mary in a stable. Notice the context in Isaiah. It is during a trying time that this prophecy comes forward. When we look at great achievements, they are rarely done in perfect circumstances. Jesus came to earth during one of Rome’s most bloodthirsty rulers, Herod. This prophecy was given during a trying time in Israel’s history and it was fulfilled in a trying time. Yet in the midst of these trials, God’s promise stood sure. Why would we think that it is any different today?

Crooked As A Dog's Hind Leg

"Crooked as a dog's hind leg!"  Have y'all ever known anyone like that?  When a person is that crooked, they're really, really crooked ........ downright corrupt as a matter of fact!

Well, I've known a few crooks in my time.  I've known crooked car salesmen, crooked insurance salesmen, crooked union officials, crooked business people, crooked politicians and crooked government officials.

Now when ya have a crooked politician who has gotten lucky and managed to get himself or herself elected to office so as to become a crooked government official, that's when you've got a particularly nasty situation.  Ya see, we can be on the look out for all those other crooks like crooked car salesmen, crooked insurance salesmen, crooked union officials and crooked business people.  We can simply avoid dealing with those crooks.  As a matter of fact, we don't have to deal with them at all, and we can tell our friends to be on the look out for these people and not to deal with them either.  And eventually, when we've managed to warne enough honest people about these garden variety crooks, we can put the crooks out of business because almost no one will deal with them any longer.  An exposed crook has only one remaining option, and that is to pack up his belongings and move along to the next town!

But not so with a crooked politician who eventually gets elected and becomes a crooked government official!  Nosiree!  These types of crooks are much harder to deal with!  Exposing them and driving them out of office is a very difficult, time-consuming and unpleasant task!

As I see it, here are the problems with exposing and driving crooked government officials out of office:
  1. Many times the crooked politicians and crooked government officials who have preceded the current crop of crooked people in public office have designed ingenious, cumbersome and time-consuming procedures for learning about, exposing and driving the crooked government officials who have succeeded them out of office.
  2. The crooked politicians and crooked government officials who currently occupy positions of power and influence have various means at their ready disposal by which they can dissuade, intimidate and otherwise obstruct the honest, tax-paying folks from learning about and exposing their crooked decisions and official misconduct.
  3. Powerful crooked politicians and crooked government officials become very adept at currying favor with other powerful crooked politicians and crooked government officials and they quickly learn the art of building a constituency of support amongst their political base, amongst the news media and amongst law enforcement officials.  They work all day long at these dishonest tasks of building their protective networks, leaving little or no time left over for performing the duties of the offices to which they were elected in the first place.
  4. The tax-paying public is just too doggone busy working to earn a living for their families and to also pay taxes to the crooked politicians and crooked government officials who arrogantly hold them in contempt.  And because of this, too few members of the tax-paying public have the time, energy or inclination to follow the crooked politicians and crooked government officials around in hopes of keeping them honest.  The crooked politicians and crooked government officials just wear us all down over time!
So, these are the problems with exposing and ridding ourselves of crooked politicians and crooked government officials, as I see them at least.

Now, as to the solutions, well that's a far more difficult matter!  I wish I had a bunch of highly effective solutions I could offer you.  But I don't!

Tell ya what!  Why don't we work on the solutions together?!  Let me hear your ideas and suggestions.  I'll collate and compile them all and publish a consolidated list of solutions at a later date.  Right now, I'm just too tired to continue writing this commentary piece.  I guess the doggone "crooked as a dog's hind leg" politicians and government officials have worn me down ...... for tonight anyway.
