This is an open letter to 'Madman', a frequent and angry commenter here at Hermann Hearsay. 'Madman' apparently doesn't like what Clark Kant and I have been reporting with respect to the performance of certain elected county officials. In his angry comments, all of which we have published, 'Madman' has challenge the veracity and accuracy of reports filed by Clark Kant and me. 'Madman' has also challenged the legitimacy of a Press Release we published a few days ago from A. E. Newman, a candidate for the office of Southern District Associate Commissioner.
'Madman', we do not know your true identity, because it has always been our policy to publish comments from anonymous commenters and from commenters who choose to use fictitious 'usernames'. For all we know, you could be one of the very county officials we have reported on critically or you could be a close relative or friend of one of these county officials. Why do we speculate that this could in fact be the case? It is only because you have been so passionate and defensive with your angry comments. What else could explain your high degree of agitation?
'Madman', you have been pressing us for a response to your wild and angry accusations that we are not reporting truthfully. You have been pressing us for a response to your wild and angry accusations that A. E. Newman's candidacy for county office is somehow illegitimate. You have called us all sorts of derogatory names ..... something you're very good at doing, 'Madman'!
Well now, 'Madman', you say you want answers? You say you want the truth? Is that correct? DO YOU WANT THE TRUTH, 'Madman'?
'Madman', please be informed that Hermann Hearsay intends to continue reporting on the job performance of county office holders, your protestations and wild accusations notwithstanding. There is more reporting to come. We will lay out the facts which back up our reports.. We will inform the public about Missouri state audit deficiencies, and we will substantiate our reports with a reproduction of that audit. We will inform the public about the misuse and mismanagement of public funds. And we will produce our evidence. Yes, there is much more to come, 'Madman'. So, if you just can't handle the TRUTH, you may want to consider NOT reading our website any longer. And when we lay out the TRUTH, 'Madman', if you choose to comment, then kindly be professional enough to address your comments to any inaccuracies in our reporting you may wish to point out to our readers. Your 'mad' rantings "prove nothing", and they do not reflect well upon you or your personal credibility.

I remember seeing Lee Greenwood sing "God Bless the USA" in Las Vegas about 20 or 25 years ago. It was great treat! He had the audience stand up and sing along with him. It was a very emotional performance and a tremendous thrill for me. I had a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye, and I don't think I was alone.
Here is Lee Greenwood singing his highly popular patriotic song back in 1985 .....

They say that "a picture is worth a thousand words". The following photo of Arlington National Cemetery must therefore speak thousands of thousands of words. Each tombstone marks the grave of a brave American serviceman (or servicewoman) who served our country, some in far distant lands. The tombstone of each fallen serviceman (or servicewoman) is itself "worth a thousand words" .... where they served, the action they saw, their service experience, the families they left behind, etc.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Important to Remember

Veterans Day is an annual United States holiday honoring veterans. A federal holiday, it is observed on Nov. 11. It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world and is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
Memorial Day is another federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service.
Over the years, more public interest has been shown the above holidays, while less to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Since April 6, 1948, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year regardless of weather. Millions of Americans annually visit the black mat on the west face of the tomb. It is a time-honored ritual, executed with great precision, and filled with American pride.
The sentinel marches 21 steps across the black mat, past the final resting places of unknown soldiers of World War I, World War II, Korea and the crypt of the Unknown Soldier of Vietnam. With a crisp turn, the sentinel turns 90 degrees to face the east for 21 seconds. The sentinel then turns a sharp 90 degrees again to face north for 21 seconds. A crisp “shoulder arms” movement places the rifle on the shoulder nearest the visitors to signify that the sentinel stands between the tomb and any threat. The practiced cadence is timed so that the sentinel paces at a rate of 90 steps each minute.
Appropriately, the men who march 21 steps south, turn and walk 21 steps north, then repeat the process minute-by-minute for up to an hour at a time day or night, are the very best of the Army’s best. Whether under a blazing sun, unsheltered from driving rains or freezing snow, they perform their duty with great precision and military bearing. Each of them is a volunteer, eligible to apply for duty as a sentinel only after they have already been ceremonially qualified.
Each soldier is physically fit for the demanding responsibility and between 5 feet, 10 inches and 6 feet, 4 inches tall with proportionate weight and build. It may take months for soldiers to earn the right to test, to wear the coveted silver Tomb Guard Identification badge, and even then, the award is temporary.
Only after the sentinel has served nine months does the award become permanent. One of the Army’s rarest emblems, it features the inverted laurel and replica of the east face of the tomb where Greek images represent the virtues of victory, valor and peace. Sentinels are members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) Fort Myer, Virginia.

Bible Verse Of The Day - Thursday, 11/11/2010

Whether we are believers or non-believers, whether we believe the Holy Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God or just a Good Book, one thing that I think should be universally accepted is the fact that the Holy Bible contains some of the best advice for daily living which can be found anywhere. Although this book is not required reading in any university degree program of psychology or psychiatry that I am aware of in America, it is my firm belief that it really SHOULD BE.
Many people all over the world suffer from anxiety. What follows today is some excellent advice for all of us. It comes from a simple verse of Scripture which may be found in the New Testament.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. ~ Philippians 4:6
We’re very familiar with anxiety, but how familiar are we with peace? Just when we get comfortable with one season of our lives we are thrust into the next, where we find our bearings have to change.
Prayer guides us into the seasons of life that we don’t understand because God’s peace transcends all understanding. To approach anxiety with thanksgiving and prayer may seem hard, but it reminds us that we were never in control to begin with. We have a Heavenly Father who sees all things and cares for us. Prayer pulls down our anxieties and fills us with supernatural peace.

Today's song is Jimi Hendrix playing "The Star Spangled Banner". This YouTube clip is believed to be a live recording of Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock.
Woodstock Music & Art Fair (informally, Woodstock or The Woodstock Festival) was a music festival, billed as "An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music". It was held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre dairy farm near the hamlet of White Lake in the town of Bethel, New York, from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Bethel, in Sullivan County, is 43 miles southwest of the town of Woodstock, New York, in adjoining Ulster County.
During the sometimes rainy weekend, thirty-two acts performed outdoors in front of 500,000 concert-goers. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most pivotal moments in popular music history and was listed among Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll.
The event was captured in the successful 1970 documentary movie Woodstock, an accompanying soundtrack album, and Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock" which commemorated the event and became a major hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
Early on September 18, 1970, Jimi Hendrix died in London. He had spent the latter part of the previous evening at a party and was picked up by girlfriend Monika Dannemann and driven to her flat at the Samarkand Hotel, 22 Lansdowne Crescent, Notting Hill. According to the estimated time of death, from autopsy data and statements by friends about the evening of September 17, he died within a few hours after midnight, though no precise estimate was made at the original inquest.
Dannemann claimed in her original testimony that after they returned to her lodgings the evening before, Hendrix, unknown to her, had taken nine of her prescribed Vesperax sleeping pills. The normal medical dose was half a tablet, but Hendrix was unfamiliar with this very strong German brand. According to surgeon John Bannister, the doctor who initially attended to him, Hendrix had asphyxiated in his own vomit, mainly red wine which had filled his airways, as the autopsy was to show. For years, Dannemann publicly claimed that she had only discovered that her lover was unconscious and unresponsive sometime after 9 a.m., that Hendrix was alive when placed in the back of the ambulance after half past eleven, and that she rode with him on the way to the hospital; the latter two are denied by the ambulance crew. However, Dannemann's comments about that morning were often contradictory, varying from interview to interview. Police and ambulance statements reveal that there was no one but Hendrix in the flat when they arrived at 11:27 a.m., and not only was he dead when they arrived on the scene, but was fully clothed and had been dead for some time.
Later, Dannemen claimed that former road managers Gerry Stickels and Eric Barrett had been present before the ambulance was called and had removed some of Hendrix's possessions, including some of his most recent messages. Lyrics written by Hendrix, which were found in the apartment, led Eric Burdon to make a premature announcement on the BBC-TV program 24 Hours that he believed Hendrix had committed suicide. Burdon often claimed he had been telephoned by Dannemann after she discovered that Jimi failed to wake up.
Following a libel case brought in 1996 by Hendrix's long-term English girlfriend Kathy Etchingham, Monika Dannemann committed suicide.

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” ~ Genesis 1:28
This is the first Great Commission that is given to mankind. Notice that God tells Adam and Eve to actively engage the world that He has created. This was repeated thousands of years later when Jesus said to His disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matt 28:18-12) Like Adam and Eve, we are called to engage the world with the good news of God’s mercy in Jesus.

Letter To The Editor: Jethro Bodine says ... "Sheriff's Jail Just Don't Cipher Out!"

Dear Editor,
I've been readin' a lot about a new county jail which the Sheriff and a few of his supporters are pushing. Now the way I look at it, we should do some careful cipherin' before we get too far down the road on this idea. And IF it does cipher out, we need to remember that by statute, the doggone thing needs to be built in the county seat of Hermann ..... not in Rosebud or Swiss or any other place.
I pulled out a #2 lead pencil and my Big Chief writin' and cipherin' tablet last night, and I commenced to cipherin'. I recommend the Sheriff do his own cipherin' rather than rely upon the Columbia consulting firm he went out and hired to give him the answer he wants. (Ooooops! Did I actually write that? Naughty me!)
Here's how I figured it last night on my 'Big Chief' tablet .......
Total Capital Cost of Constructing a Jail = TCC
(Get three estimates and average them together. Don't forget that county jail design will need to meet minimum construction standards as well as all pertinent local, state and federal regulations.)
Total Annual Operating Expense of the Proposed Jail = TOE
(Calculate this by plugging best available estimates into the formula shown below.)
Total Annual Net Fees to House Prisoners in Jails of Adjoining Counties = TNF
(Calculate this by subtracting Missouri state reimbursements from the fees charged to Gasconade
County by adjoining counties.)
TOE = DL + CL + UE + IE + OS + IT + ME + BM + PM + AE
where:
DL = Annual Direct Labor Expense (including benefits) for County Deputies Required to Staff Jail
CL = Annual Indirect Labor Expense Billed by Contractors Engaged to Provide Service to Jail
UE = Annual Utility Expenses (electricity, water, sewer, etc.) to Operate Jail
IE = Annual Increase in Cost of Liability Insurance and Property and Casualty Insurance Associated With Operation of the Jail
OS = Annual Operating Supplies Associated With Operation of the Jail
IT = Annual Information Technology Expenses, Computer Expenses, Telephone and Fax Machine Expenses
ME = Annual Medical and Dental Expenses Associated with Care of Prisoners
BM = Annual Building Maintenance and Custodial Expenses Associated with Operation of Jail
PM = Annual Cost of Prisoner/Detainee Meals
AE = Annual Advetising Expenses for Sheriff's Bearcat Affinity Ads
If TOE > TNF, then we really need to question why we would want to construct out own county jail vs. contracting the job out to Crawford County (currently) or Montgomery County (formerly).
If TOE < TNF, then what is the estimate annual savings to the county? Let's call this estimated annual savings = EAS.
Now if this EAS amount is sufficient to both service the debt (interest payments) and retire the debt over a 15 or 20 year period (principal payments), we should double-check our cipherin' and perhaps consider the county jail project.
If however this EAS amount is not sufficient to both service the debt (interest payments) and retire the debt over a 15 or 20 year period (principal payments), we should back away from the project and vote out of office those who have been pushing the project without first running the numbers.
Sheriff Esphorst and Southern District Associate Commissioner Lairmore, I still have several pages left in my 'Big Chief' writin' and cipherin' tablet and a few #2 lead pencils. You are welcome to use my cipherin' supplies ...... that is if you'd like to "put a pencil to paper" yourselves! According to my best cipherin', a new county jail just doesn't pay out for Gasconade County at this time! I've tried various assumptions for the elements of cost to operate the jail, and I just don't see how we could get our operating costs down below the approximate $500,000 net jailing fees I am told we have paid out over the course of the past 5 years.
