From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. – Acts 17:26 (NIV)

We can certainly say that we had nothing to do with the time and place of our birth! Your nationality and heritage were chosen by God. So even if someone were born in the outer mountains of Mongolia, God has set things in place so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out and find him. The apostle Paul gives us hope and a mystery for those who wonder about the faithfulness of God to His creation. Just like the Greeks that Paul was addressing, the question is not “What is God doing in the outer reaches of the world?” but rather “What is God doing in me right now?”

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. – Romans 8:1-2 (NIV)

Notice that it is through Christ Jesus that we get this law of the Spirit of life. In the previous chapter of Romans we see that mankind has a dilemma – man keeps breaking the laws of God. This came as a result of the sin that was released upon the earth through Adam. But God had a plan. He came as a man to live a perfect life, then wrongly die a horrible death. But the life of Jesus broke the power of death upon mankind, therefore it is through Christ Jesus that we are freed from sin and death. Condemnation is for those who are guilty, but Jesus brings us pardon! We are set free.

A self-ordained man o' the cloth,
A legend in his own mind.
A gun totin' man o' the clergy,
He's definitely one of a kind.

He's ornery and contrary;
Dealing with him is certainly no joy.
Intolerant and belligerent,
The Right Reverend Ralphie Boy.

On politics and county affairs,
The Right Reverend oft does opine.
Grizzled, grumpy, gruff and ill-tempered,
He snarls, barks, growls, snaps, and whines.

Other opinions and viewpoints,
The Right Reverend does not seek.
He projects confidence and strength,
Yet he's really insecure and weak.

He's ornery and contrary;
Dealing with him is certainly no joy.
Intolerant and belligerent,
The Right Reverend Ralphie Boy.

He makes many proclamations,
Ridiculing and judging others harshly.
Increasingly irrelevant,
Yet ol' Ralphie Boy blows loudly.

With nothing more productive to do,
He pokes fun and makes mindless jokes.
He plays with his computer,
Drinks cheap whiskey and takes a few tokes.

Yep, he's ornery and contrary;
 Dealing with him is certainly no joy.
Intolerant and belligerent,
The Right Reverend Ralphie Boy.

He's gottin' old and paranoid;
Spooks n' goblins he sees all around.
He's afraid of his own shadow,
A huge one since he weighs 500 pounds.

His beard's gottin' gray n' burly,
His ass big, fat and wide.
He rants, spits and he rails,
More than most folks can abide.

The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” – Matthew 4:3-4 (NIV)

In this passage Jesus has denied His physical body food so that He could focus upon the words of God. There are seasons where we need to remind our body where our true life lies. Whether our appetite is for food, entertainment, or even other people, the wilderness experience reminds us that we were created for more than just consumption. Later in John’s gospel Jesus proclaims “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” God offers us something great than bread, He offers us life in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.
