THE RETIRED PREACHER
A preacher retired and moved to the country to enjoy life and practice his hobby of yard work. Needing a lawn mower, he headed into town to buy one. On the way he saw a sign advertising a lawn mower for sale. He stopped at the house and a young lad came out to greet him.
The preacher asked about the lawn mower and the kid said it was behind the house. The two went to look at the lawn mower. The engine was sputtering along at idle speed. The preacher increased the speed of the engine and mowed a few strips. Satisfied that the mower would do the job they settled on a price of $25.00.
Later in the day, the young lad was riding his bicycle when he spied the preacher pulling on the engine starter rope. The kid stopped and watched for a couple of minutes. He asked, "What's wrong?"
The reply came, "I can't get this mower started. Do you know how?"
The kid said, "Yep."
"Well, how do you do it? Tell me!", the preacher yelled.
The kid replied, "You have to cuss it."
The preacher rose up indignantly. "Now you listen here. I am a preacher and if I ever did cuss, not saying I have, I've forgotten how to do it after all these years."
With a wise look on his face well beyond his years, the kid said, "Preacher, you keep on pulling that rope and it'll all come back to ya."

But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him. – Habakkuk 2:20
Habakkuk is a unique dialogue between the prophet and God. 50-80 years after Isaiah, Habakkuk was to help the nation of Israel make sense of the Babylonian invasion through this drama that is played out for the readers. In the prior verses, God ridicules the idols that cannot speak to those who make them. In contrast, it is the earth that is to be silent before the living God because He is the one who speaks! Like Israel in that day, we want fast answers to our crisis, but if we want to hear the God who speaks, we must learn the discipline of silence. It is the supreme act of faith and surrender to simply wait upon the Lord. He is there and He wants to speak to His children, but it will be on His terms and not ours.

Bobby Hackett, the cornetist whose mellow tone and graceful style made him a favorite of both jazz and pop music audiences.
Whitney Balliett described Bobby Hackett in The New Yorker as "a unique and extremely successful alloy of Beiderbecke and Armstrong."
"His tone." Mr. Balliett wrote "which is quiet and shining, resembles Beiderbecke's and so does his three-steps-up, two steps down method of improvising. But his sustained notes and way of playing just behind the beat and of occasionally slipping into double time are straight out of Louis Armstrong."
Born in Providence, R.I. Bobby Hackett began his music career by studying the violin but switched to the trumpet and later to the cornet. He began playing professionally while in his teens and was soon appearing with some of the best known names of the "Big Band Era."
Bobby Hackett appeared with Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller and Paul Whiteman among others.
"Music should be pretty," he said. "You should hear and recognize the melody. And real greatness is in the simplicity. Simple things are the hardest to play and the easiest to listen to."
Here is Bobby Hackett on the cornet playing some music that is very "easy to listen to" .....

The weekend has finally arrived! College football today, and NFL football tomorrow! My favorite time of the year! Here's a joke for all of our football fans out there:
Three Texans, Slim, Billy-Bob and Bubba died and went to heaven. At the pearly gates, they were met by St. Peter, who explained that although it was late and God had retired for the evening, he had asked Albert Einstein to show them around so they wouldn't get bored before they met God in the morning.
After Einstein had introduced himself to Slim, he asked, "By the way, Slim, what was your IQ when you were alive?"
"159", said Slim.
"Great!", said Einstein. We'll discuss my general theory of relativity and maybe a little unified field theory as I show you around."
"What an exciting opportunity!", said Slim.
Einstein then introduced himself to Billy-Bob, and when he was done he said, "Tell me, Billy-Bob - what was your IQ when you were alive?"
"141", said Billy-Bob.
"Good," said Einstein. "If you'd like, we can discuss a little mathematics and philosophy as I point out the heavenly sights."
"Nothing I'd like better!" was Billy-Bob's reply.
After Einstein had introduced himself to Bubba, he asked, "What was your IQ when you were alive, Bubba?"
"58" said Bubba.
Punching him on the arm, Einstein said, "Hey, Bubba - How 'bout them Cowboys!"

At daybreak Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. But he said, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea. – Luke 4:42-44
When we come to Christ we all have agendas. We see the goodness of Jesus and we look for Him. Then we want to live in those experiences and have our needs met. But Jesus was sent to bring the good news to other places and peoples.
When we have experienced the goodness of God, don’t be surprised when that goodness takes us beyond our comfort zones and into a waiting world. God’s heart is to propel you and I into our workplaces and communities, proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom through our words and deeds.

"The Madman", a frequent visitor to this site, commented recently on the Gasconade County audits which are rife with glaring deficiencies .....
"As to the Audit... Cry some more. Ok, some minor boob ups happened. NOTHING I see shows anything dark and sinister, like you keep looking for, I see a few procedural errors. WOW!" ~ Madman
You just gotta wonder why "The Madman" is so tolerant of gross incompetence and blatant arrogance in county goverment? Is he perhaps related to someone in our county government? Or does he just have a "blind eye" when it comes to Republican "screw-ups", perhaps because of his close association with the Gasconade County Pachyderms and the Gasconade County Republicans? Makes ya wonder! Doesn't it?!

"For Gasconade County Presiding Commissoner Ron Jost to authorize the county to pay the legal bills of the two respondents in the infamous "salary overpayment" lawsuit is an absolute outrage! For the respondents to expect the taxpayers of the county to pay their personal legal bills is supremely shameful!" ~ A. E. Newman, Candidate for Southern District Associate Commissioner

He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.’ – Luke 19:26-27
This is a jarring parable. It seems that Jesus is teaching that God is not as concerned about how many resources that we have as much as how well we use those resources. We are tempted to think, “If I only had more money.” or ” All I need are more opportunities.” But this parable tells us that God has already given us resources. What are we doing with them? When God is in the picture, all Moses needed was a staff to deliver the Jewish people from bondage. What has God already put in your hand? How can you use your talent in such a way that our heavenly Father will be able entrust you with more?
