I stopped by the coffee shop this mornin' to visit with my ol' buddies Cletus, Clem and Claude.  I hadn't seen 'em all for quite some time.  'Guess we've all been workin' too hard to take time out for coffee!

When I got there, the topic of a very lively conversation was the status of the gifted transfer of the Joe Roetheli properties from the GCCS (Gasconade County Courthouse Society) over to Gasconade County.  The GCCS has held these properties which are situated on both the east and west sides of the county courthouse here in Hermann for quite some time.  My ol' Hermann High School classmate Joe Roetheli has been trying to give these properties to the county for years.  But these days it ain't easy to give nothin' away for FREE!  Not when lawyers and politicians are involved anyway!

Here's a transcript of this mornin's meeting at the coffee shop:

Me:  Hi ya fellas!  How's it goin' this mornin'?
Clem:  Just fine, Dick!  We were just discussin' the transfer of Joe Roetheli's properties over to Gasconade County.
Claude:  It sure does seem like it takes an act of Congress to GIVE away land Scott-free to the county.  Lots of lawyers gettin' involved now!  And some of our commissioner boys sure do have a lot of questions!
Cletus:  Reckon the commissioners are gonna accept that FREE land?  Or do ya think ol' Jerry and Ron are gonna have lots of objections to the terms and conditions of the transfer?
Me:  Well, I imagine it's sure gonna get interesting now!
Clem:  We hear tell that local attorney Don Althauser has prepared two general warranty deeds for the properties and that Dale Ridder, the President of the GCCS, has presented these documents to the County Commission.  Heard tell that Dale went to a county commission meeting on February 17th just for that purpose.  But apparently Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore has lots of questions.  Copies of the documents will be given to County Prosecutor Ada Brehe-Krueger for her review.  Jerry Lairmore is evidently not quite satisfied with her sole review of the documents on behalf of the county.  We hear that he wants Ivan Schraeder to assist with the "review".  Jerry's really "lookin' that gift horse over real close"!
Claude:  Yep, somethin' smells fishy here!  Why does it take so many lawyers to review a document which conveys ownership to some FREE property that will be mighty valuable some day when the county needs to expand its facilities?  'Looks like the county commissioners would be welcoming this private gift to the county!
Me:  Yeah, I can see what you boys are sayin' alright!
Cletus:  I know that Matt Penning, our commissioner up here on the northern end of the county, wants to see this property get transferred over, so the county can begin work on the much needed courthouse emergency access road and also begin planning for courthouse rennovation and office expansion.  Now someone told me that Presiding Commissioner Ron Jost stated his support for constructing the emergency road at a GCCS Board Meeting way back in December.  At that time, he said he wanted to wait until the spring for real good construction weather, and he wanted to wait until the Roetheli properties had been legally transferred over to the county.  Well it's damned near springtime, and I don't see why the generous gift of this FREE land needs to take very much longer!
Me:  Well, I gotta say that I agree with ya, Cletus.
Claude:  Yep, the county needs to accept the properties and move on!
Me:  Like my dearly departed high school Latin teacher, Myrtle Roberts, used to say ... "Don't look a GIFT HORSE in the mouth!"
Clem:  Mrs. Roberts must've been a very wise lady, Dick!
Me:  Yes she was, Clem!  Yes, indeed she was!  I'll always remember how she warned us "NOT to look a GIFT HORSE in the mouth!"
