We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. – Romans 8:22-23 (NIV)
The tragedy of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan is a witness to the creation groaning. The Bible teaches that the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden brought a curse upon all of the earth. It would be good and beautiful by God’s creation, but fallen by Adam’s rebellion. But God has created a sign of hope for this fallen creation: the new birth in Christ. The renewal of the heart has re-created a people, and that people are a firstfruit, or a down payment, that there is coming a day that all of creation will experience something new. Pray for the people of Japan today. Pray for that coming day when all of God’s creation will be made new. For those who have been renewed in Christ, we are a sign that God will do it!
