Wynton Learson Marsalis (born October 18, 1961) is a trumpeter, composer, bandleader, music educator, and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Marsalis has promoted the appreciation of Classical and Jazz music often to young audiences. Marsalis has been awarded nine Grammys in both genres, and was awarded the first Pulitzer Prize for Music for a jazz recording.

Marsalis is the son of jazz musician, Ellis Marsalis, Jr. (pianist), grandson to Ellis Marsalis, Sr. and brother to Branford (saxophonist), Delfeayo (trombonist), Mboya, and Jason (drummer).

Wynton was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 18, 1961, to Dolores and Ellis Marsalis, the second of six sons. At an early age he exhibited an aptitude for music. At age eight, Wynton performed traditional New Orleans music in the Fairview Baptist Church band led by banjoist Danny Barker, and at 14, he performed with the New Orleans Philharmonic. During high school, Wynton performed with the New Orleans Symphony Brass Quintet, New Orleans Community Concert Band, New Orleans Youth Orchestra, New Orleans Symphony, various jazz bands and with a local funk band, the Creators.

At age 17, Wynton was the youngest musician admitted to Tanglewood's Berkshire Music Center, where he won the school's Harvey Shapiro Award for outstanding brass student. Wynton moved to New York City to attend Juilliard in 1979, and picked up gigs around town. In 1980, Wynton joined the Jazz Messengers led by Art Blakey. In the years that followed, Wynton performed with Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Sweets Edison, Clark Terry, Sonny Rollins, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams and countless other jazz legends.

In 1995, PBS premiered Marsalis On Music, an educational television series on jazz and classical music hosted and written by Marsalis. Also, in 1995, National Public Radio aired the first of Marsalis’ 26-week series, entitled Making the Music. Wynton's radio and television series were awarded the George Foster Peabody Award. Marsalis has also written five books: Sweet Swing Blues on the Road, Jazz in the Bittersweet Blues of Life, To a Young Musician: Letters from the Road, Jazz ABZ (an A to Z collection of poems celebrating jazz greats), and his most recent release Moving to Higher Ground: How Jazz Can Change Your Life.

In 1987, Wynton Marsalis co-founded a jazz program at Lincoln Center. In July 1996, Jazz at Lincoln Center was installed as new constituent of Lincoln Center. In October 2004, Marsalis opened Frederick P. Rose Hall, the world's first institution for jazz containing three performance spaces (including the first concert hall designed specifically for jazz) along with recording, broadcast, rehearsal and educational facilities. Wynton presently serves as Artistic Director for Jazz at Lincoln Center and Music Director for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

Here is a much younger Wynton Marsalis performing "Carnival of Venice" with the Boston Pops.

Bible Verse Of The Day - Matthew 4:8-10 - Tuesday, 4/5/2011

Published by Lois Lame, Assistant Editor

Date:  4/5/2011
Post:  2,026

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” – Matthew 4:8-10 (NIV)

Satan tempts Jesus with unparalleled power, but in a stunning reversal of the Garden of Eden, Jesus resists temptation and stands on the word of God. Whether Satan could give Jesus the kingdoms of the world and their splendor is a debatable point, but it didn’t matter to Jesus. He was destined to have those kingdoms anyway, but not through a deal with the devil. As Jesus obeyed the Father all the way to the cross, God would establish the name of Jesus above every other name. How about us? Are we trying to cut corners to get to our dreams, or are we willing to surrender to God and trust Him?

Song Of The Day - "You're The One" by The Vogues - Monday, 4/4/2011

Published by Lois Lame, Assistant Editor

Date:  4/4/2011
Post:  2,023

The Vogues are an American vocal group from Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh. The original group consisted of Bill Burkette (lead baritone), Don Miller (baritone), Hugh Geyer (first tenor) and Chuck Blasko (second tenor).

Originally, the group was called The Val-Airs. Their high school principal helped them make their first demo. Their first and only record as The Val-Airs was "Launie, My Love". first released by local record label Willett Records (owned by the group's manager, Elmer Willett), then distributed nationally on Coral Records. Soon after the song's release, the group adopted the name The Vogues, derived from Vogue Terrace, a popular teenage dance hall (which also housed Willett Records) in North Versailles, Pennsylvania, near the group's hometown. They soon signed a recording contract with a small Pittsburgh-based label, Co & Ce Records, run by Herb Cohen and Nick Cenci. The group broke nationally in 1965 with a cover of Petula Clark's "You're The One" that rose to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was followed the same year by "Five O'Clock World", which also reached No. 4. Two further singles, "Magic Town" and "The Land of Milk and Honey", did not reach the same heights, but still made Billboard's Top 40 in 1966.

The group's fortunes dwindled until a move in 1968 to Reprise Records and a revival on the charts with the million-selling cover of Glen Campbell's "Turn Around, Look at Me", and No. 7 cover of Bobby Helms' "My Special Angel". The group lost favor in the 1970s, but various groupings used the name The Vogues into the 2000s. Subsequent business moves allowed the new owner of their trademark name to later assign it to another group of all-new artists. Original member Chuck Blasko, performing with other singers as Chuck Blasko's Five O'clock World Reunion, subsequently lobbied Congress to make changes in trademark laws to prevent others from misrepresenting themselves as the original Vogues.

As of March 2007, original member Hugh Geyer, who had briefly toured with Blasko's group, was touring the country with another version of The Vogues. Blasko continues to perform as Chuck Blasko & The Vogues in 14 Western Pennsylvania counties that were awarded to him by the courts.

As of May 2008 original lead vocalist Burkette has joined Geyer touring the country with the 'trademark' Vogues. Current members include vocalists Burkette, Geyer, Jim Campagna, Stan Elich, and Troy Elich, Tom Lamb (guitar and musical director), Artie Delonardis (drums), Dean Mastrangelo (keyboards) and Rich Gooch (bass). The Vogues trademark owner, Stan Elich, passed away in December, 2010, and his son, Troy, now owns the trademark. Vocalist Jim Campagna no longer tours because of health issues. Bill Burkette, Hugh Geyer and Troy Elich continue to tour as The Vogues.

The original group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001.

Here are The Vogues performing their 1965 hit, "You're The One".

Bible Verse Of The Day - Exodus 20:17 - Monday, 4/4/2011

Published by Lois Lame, Assistant Editor

Date:  4/4/2011
Post:  2,019

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. – Exodus 20:17

The word covet does not come up in everyday language much. But it certainly is a part of everyday life! The definition for coveting is: to desire wrongfully, inordinately, or without due regard for the rights of others. Behind this is a heart of ingratitude, selfishness and a belief that God has somehow withheld something from us. “I sure wish I had one of those… or, “why isn’t my spouse more like them…or, “why do I have to stay in this job…?”

Wanting what we don’t have displays that we are not satisfied with God’s provision in our life. “I deserve better than this!” And, “I know what I need better than God does.” When we believe that God is infinitely good, and we remember that he alone is sovereign, we can set all coveting aside. Another way of translating this command would be, “Be satisfied with what your generous God has given you!”

Hermann News & Hearsay - Sunday, 4/3/2011

Hermann News
  • The price of regular gasoline is $3.499 per gallon at Hermann Fuel Mart in Hermann today.  Another middle-east "democratic revolution" or two, and we could easily see $4 to $5 per gallon gasoline by Memorial Day.
  • Temperatures reached into the 80s today.

Hermann Hearsay
  • A local online "news" organization is reporting notable progress on the transfer of the Roetheli properties from the GCCS (Gasconade County Courthouse Society) to Gasconade County based upon the statements of intent by members of the County CommissionHermann Hearsay will withhold any premature conclusions (and reporting) that the property has been transferred until the general warranty deeds have been modified to the satisfaction of all parties, signed, executed and properly recorded.  And with regard to construction of the new emergency access road to the courthouse, we will wait to report on that until we actually see base rock being hauled in.  You see with the County Commission, we have found that nothing is ever a "done deal" until it is actually "done".

The man who invented it doesn't want it. The man who bought it doesn't need it. The man who needs it doesn't know it.

Question:  What is it?

(For Answer see Comment Section.)
