Herbert Khaury (April 12, 1932 November 30, 1996), better known by the stage name Tiny Tim, was an American singer, ukulele player, and musical archivist. He was most famous for his rendition of "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" sung in a distinctive high falsetto/vibrato voice (though his normal singing voice was in a standard male range). He was generally regarded as a novelty act, though his records indicate his wide knowledge of American songs. He had no official middle name, though some web sites report it to be "Butros", his father's first name, while during his televised wedding his middle name was given as "Buckingham". His headstone reads "Khaury/Herbert B/Tiny Tim/1932-1996".
Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, Tiny Tim developed something of a cult following. In the 1960s he was seen regularly near the Harvard University campus as a street performer, singing old Tin Pan Alley tunes. His choice of repertoire and his encyclopedic knowledge of vintage popular music impressed many of the spectators. One admirer, Norman Kay, recalled that Tiny Tim's outrageous public persona was a false front belying a quiet, studious personality: "Herb Khaury was the greatest put-on artist in the world. Here he was with the long hair and the cheap suit and the high voice, but when you spoke to him he talked like a college professor. He knew everything about the old songs.
Between 1962 and 1966 Tiny Tim recorded a number of songs at small (almost microscopic) recording companies, with several of them being made as "acetates" and one actually released as a 45 record. These songs illustrate that even very early on he had a decided drive for success and was getting noticed in a positive way, despite his looks and unusual manner. However he also recorded one entire batch of songs that would come back to disastrously haunt him at the peak of his greatest fame.
Tiny Tim appeared in Jack Smith's Normal Love, as well as the independent feature film You Are What You Eat (his appearance in this film featured him singing the old Ronettes hit, "Be My Baby" in his falsetto range; also featured was a rendition of Sonny and Cher's I Got You Babe, with Tim singing the Cher parts in his falsetto voice, along with Eleanor Barooshian reprising Sonny Bono's baritone part. These tracks were recorded with Robbie Robertson and the other members of what was going to become known as The Band. The latter performance led to a booking on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, an American television comedy-variety show. Dan Rowan announced that Laugh-In believed in showcasing new talent, and introduced Tiny Tim. The singer entered, blowing kisses, and sang "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" to Dick Martin.
This stunt was followed by several more appearances on Laugh-In and a recording contract with Reprise Records. He made a name for himself as a novelty performer, guesting with Johnny Carson, Ed Sullivan, and Jackie Gleason. At the height of his career, he was commanding a weekly salary of $50,000 in Las Vegas, Nevada. "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" became Tiny Tim's signature song. He sang it in homage to its originator, singer-guitarist Nick Lucas. He invited Lucas to sing at his wedding in 1969.
In 1968, his first album, God Bless Tiny Tim, was released. It contained an orchestrated version of "Tiptoe Through the Tulips", which became a hit after being released as a single. The other songs displayed his wide-ranging knowledge of the American songbook, and also allowed him to demonstrate his baritone voice, which was less often heard than his falsetto. He did his second recorded version of "I Got You Babe", this time singing a "duet" with himself, taking Cher's part in falsetto, and Sonny's part in the baritone range.[citation needed] "On the Old Front Porch" extends this to a trio, including a boy (Billy Murray), the girl he is courting (Ada Jones), and her father (probably Murray again). Another notable song was a cover of "Stay Down Here Where You Belong", written by Irving Berlin in 1914 to protest the Great War. It is written from the standpoint of Satan talking to his son, and is a powerful condemnation of those who foment war: To please their kings, they've all gone out to war, and not a one of them knows what they're fighting for Kings up there are bigger devils than your dad. (The comedian Groucho Marx also used this song as part of his own act, at least in part to irk Berlin, who in later years tried in vain to disown the song.)
Here is Tiny Tim with a song we are dedicating to two of our most avid readers, Cletus and the Happy Shoveler .....

Bible Verse Of The Day - Wednesday, 1/5/2011

“I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, show yourself a man, and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in his ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements, as written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go,"– 1 Kings 2:2-3
As David is on his deathbed, notice what he says to Solomon: “show yourself a man”. This is not based upon Solomon’s taking up the sword or being a shrewd king. David based his measure of a man upon how well Solomon could observe what the Lord his God required. When a man (or woman) follows after the Lord wholeheartedly, the journey ahead is so challenging that it will require both courage and wisdom. David knew that God would be far more adept than any human teacher to equip his earthly son with the skill sets for success. If it was good enough for Solomon, how about us? Are we willing to walk in His ways?

Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. – Proverbs 3:7-8
One of the challenges of learning is that we can think that we know more than we actually do. But this proverb tells us that as we take a different posture to the things that we think that we know, we open ourselves up to new information that can be “tipping points” for us. There is little benefit to being wise in our own eyes, so humility is a necessity with knowledge. Humility keeps the fear of the Lord in front of us AND opens our ears and eyes to the wonderful things that others bring to our lives. Take some time and ask questions of those around you. You might be amazed at how different perspectives can revitalize you and give you new strength.

Obama And GOP Up To Old Tricks

The following article was written nearly a month ago by Bob Lonsberry. Yet it is still worth reading. The media has been praising the accomplishments of President Obama during the "lame duck" Congress. And I'm afraid many Americans have taken comfort knowing that the Democrats and Republicans were able to work in a bi-partisan way to make deals. I'm not sure any of us should be so euphoric. Bob Lonsberry points this out in his 12/7 article which is copied and pasted hereinbelow. There are many other thought provoking articles on Bob Lonsberry. I recomment that you visit his website and read more of his writings. Look for a list of his writings in date order near the bottom of his Home page.

OBAMA AND THE GOP UP TO OLD TRICKS

They made a deal.
Last night, Barack Obama and the Republicans in the Congress made a deal.
They all worked together and played nice and got the people's work done.
Which should make me happy.
Unfortunately, it doesn't.
Because much more working together like that, and our country will go belly up.
I don’t want to be negative, and I'm not trying to be a jerk, but this deal is right out of the reality-denying past that has just about bankrupted our country.
You've heard the headlines. The so-called Bush tax cuts are extended, working families get to keep some $3,000, unemployment is extended. Everything is hunky dory.
Except it's not.
Let's go down the list.
Tax cuts, an extra 13 months of unemployment benefits for untold millions, and a reduction in the amount of Social Security tax collected from payrolls.
All of those things may sound nice, and they all have their constituencies, but they all translate into one thing.
More debt.
At a time when we are on the verge of collapse because of deficit spending and the accumulated debt, Democrats and Republicans have agreed on a deal that is financed exclusively in red ink.
Yes, tax cuts are good. But not if they aren't balanced with corresponding spending cuts. Tax cuts without spending cuts are not tax cuts, they are tax deferments. They simply transfer the tax to the future, when the debt comes due, and they add to it compounding interest.
Tax cuts without spending cuts are insane. They do not stimulate the economy, they strangle the future.
Tacking on 56 additional weeks of unemployment checks, to people who have already gotten 99 weeks, means that they can now expect to receive three years of weekly checks averaging $300. The need to find work has been pushed back for three complete years, and untold millions have discovered a new welfare entitlement.
And that costs money.
Then there's the reduction in the Social Security payroll tax, which hasn't been completely described yet. Nonetheless, inasmuch as Social Security goes directly into the general fund and is consequently nothing but a second income tax, the reduction in the payroll tax will decrease the amount of money coming into the federal treasury.
And that will happen without corresponding cuts, so it will not be a true tax cut, it will be a tax deferment.
Further, the deal includes the expansion and extension of various tax credits from the Obama stimulus. Those tax credits are nothing other than welfare payments. More and bigger checks to more people.
And all of that will be covered by more debt.
In the first significant political act of the post-election reality, the Democrats and the Republicans have agreed to dive deeper in the red ink.
One of the overwhelming issues of the recent election, deficit and debt, has been completely ignored in the first political deal after the election.
That's a bad sign for the next two years.
Because, no, Barack Obama didn't learn anything from the recent election. And it looks like Senate Republicans didn't either.
Which brings us to an old adage: When the politicians are agreeing, the people need to worry.
Because if they're not screwing each other, they're screwing us.
And this deal is a big screwing.
It allows them to go forward, it lets them each play nice to their constituencies, and it leaves us the tab.
Like every major federal initiative since the Social Security Act of 1936, the politicians have looked to others to pay their bills. They buy votes with taxpayers' money, bribing with a government check, and sending the tab along to the future. And this deal continues that.
It's like a person with lung cancer, with the oxygen tube in his nose, lighting up a cigarette.
And it's wrong.
The most important thing we can do is balance our budget and pay our debt. And that is going to hurt. One side will have to forego tax cuts, and the other side will have to forego welfare checks. It's that simple. Everything has to be cut.
In this deal, nothing was cut. The age-old purchase of votes continues.
And the hole gets deeper.
Let's hope the Republicans in the House understood the meaning of the election. Let's hope somebody stands up for reason and balanced books.
Let's hope they don't kill our country.

A funny joke about making New Year's resolutions about healthy diet:
The teacher in a Bible class asked a woman to read from the Book of Numbers about the Israelites wandering in the desert. "The Lord heard you when you wailed, 'If only we had meat to eat!' " she began. "Now the Lord will give you meat. You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, or ten or twenty days, but for a month—until you loathe it."
When the woman finished, she paused, looked up, and said, "Hey, isn't that the Atkins diet?"
