Bible Verse Of The Day - Tuesday, 9/7/2010

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. – Matthew 16:24-25

The Bible is filled with paradoxes. The wisdom of losing your life only makes sense when you realize that there is another life to be gained. But that new life only comes when we first suffer the loss of giving up what we hold dear. Part of the dilemma is that we have to give up the familiar with no sense of what the new holds. This requires an action that engages our heart, mind and soul. And that is when the Lord can use us the most. To lose our life positions us to walk by faith, and that is the path that God has made us for since the Garden of Eden.

The City of Owensville is governed by a Mayor as well as other elected officials known as the Board of Aldermen. The Aldermen are made up of four officials, representing two wards that serve two-year terms.  One of the four aldermen, John Kamler, recently offered his services to work toward "county unity" after having been prompted to do so by local "news" publisher Jeff Noedel.  Apparently the affairs of the City of Owensville are so well managed and so well in control that Mr. Kamler has the time to assume this additional responsibility!  Maybe the City of Hermann can learn from the City of Owensville how it is they can afford to "lend" one of their alderman out to the county to participate in the "county unity effort" which Mr. Noedel is promoting?

And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”  ~ Numbers 13:32-33

In this famous Scripture twelve men were chosen to spy out the land that God had promised to the Israelites. The problem occurred when the men who went saw the inhabitants as bigger than the God who had sent them. They allowed the circumstances to blind their vision of Jehovah. Unfortunately, this action kept the Israelites in the wilderness for 40 years! We face similar challenges. How do we see our surroundings? Do we see ourselves as grasshoppers? How big is our God in those settings? It can mean the difference between going forward or staying in the wilderness.

Sufferin' Succotash!!!

'Just received a call on my cellphone from 'Daffy Duck' who lives in Owensville.  'Daffy' was excited, agitated and very HOT under the collar, and here is what he said ......

"Suffernin' succotash!!!

I just can't believe we now have one of our aldermen who wants to work on so-called 'county unity'!  Can't this nattering naybob of negativity see that there is more than enough work to keep himself busy in Owensville?!

As far as I know, there are still many, many Owensville streets that need to be patched or re-surfaced!  As far as I know, Owensville electric rates are still too high for residents and businesses and something needs to be done about it!  As far as I know, Owensville people still need more, high-paying jobs and Owensville downtown businesses are still being boarded up!  Surely that oughta be enough to keep all the aldermen in Owensville busy for a few years!

Suffernin' succotash!!!"

Yosemite Sam left a message on our answering machine late Saturday night.  (I think Yosemite Sam had been drinkin' a few shots of Yellostone whiskey.)  Yosemite Sam said .....

"Shame on you, you dad-burned commissioner skunks and media varmints who are always stirrin' things up!  You shameless fellars just feed off one another!  It's very transparent what you're doin'!  We ain't a bunch of dad-blamed fools out here, and you can't pull the wool over our eyes!  You commissioner boys are so pathetically shameless that you get your friends and relatives to come into public meetings to make stump speeches callin' for this and callin' for that whilst the ambulance-chasin' media boys salivate over the sensational photos, video tapes and one-sided stories they can write up for their "newspapers" and online "news" sites!  Plumb pathetic!  Just plumb pathetic!  Why don't you commissioner boys get to work doin' the legitimate business of the county?!  And why don't you media boys start reportin' on the important stories?!  Dad-blamed flea-bitten skunks and varmints!"

Bible Verse Of The Day - Sunday, 9/5/2010

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.” – Genesis 22:1-2

To offer a child in human sacrifice may seem incredibly barbaric, but God was speaking to Abraham in the language of his day. Child sacrifice was common in Abraham’s time. What was unusual was that God stopped the sacrifice! God was re-educating Abraham about the nature of the true God. The journey of Abraham and Isaac was a shadowing of another time that God would reveal His true nature to mankind. At the cross God didn’t stop the sacrifice but offered His own Son, whom He loves, for us. This sacrifice was given once and for all so that God could speak to us in the languages of our day and re-educate us about who He is and how we can know Him.
