Quote Of The Day - Thursday, 7/1/2010

Published by Lois Lame, SSALRCYTMVDQJCP & Assistant Editor

The subject was strikeouts and walks.  During his career with the New York Yankees, the late, great Mickey Mantle (#7) had 1,710 strikeouts and 1,734 walks.

"That's 3,444 times I came to bat without hitting the ball," Mickey said.  "Figure 500 at-bats a season for a player playing regularly --- and that means I played seven years without hitting the ball."

That's a lot of swings, attempts and difficulties to overcome for one of the most respected batting champions baseball has ever known.

Mickey continued, "Sometimes when I'm doing a question-and-answer, a guy will ask, 'Didn't you strikeout a lot?'  I say, 'I sure did.  I struck out 1,710 times, but every one of them was almost a home run.'"
