The following quotation is attributed to a blogger named Brendan Scott*:

"The test for a conflict of interest is:

• whether you could be (not whether you are) influenced by your private interest in carrying out your official duties, or
• whether people are likely to believe that you could be influenced.

If the public suspect the worst, your reputation and that of the council [or organization with which you are affiliated] will be damaged, however sure you may be of your ground. So, even if you are certain your motives and actions are beyond reproach, you should avoid involvement in anything that could be construed as being influenced by personal interests."

And so now I ask our readers to carefully consider the following:

Does a "conflict of interest" exist when a member of the Hermann City Council is also a part-owner in a local online "news" website which reports on the deliberations and actions of that same municipal council? 

I say that a "conflict of interest" does exist in that situation, and therefore I call upon Brian Chorley to either resign his position as Ward 2 Alderman on the Hermann City Council or resign his position with and dissolve his ownership interest in CountyNewsLIVE.com, a local online "news" publication.
