God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth, riches or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, riches and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.” – 2 Chronicles 1:11-12

Solomon learned well from his father, David. When given the opportunity to ask for anything that he wanted, Solomon asked for the wisdom to be a servant of God and His people. It is when we don’t idolize success that God can give it to us, because success will not change who we primarily are. In desiring wisdom, Solomon was focusing on the tools that would allow him to handle his kingdom well. When we desire wisdom over achievement, we too set the stage for a richness of life. The good life can be easily mistaken as material gain, but we have a witness that God has a greater definition of what it means to live life to the fullest.

  1. Odd that God granted him, all that he, in REALITY, already possessed.

Thanks for the sharing this insight, Lois.
