Hermann Hearsay Declines To Cover HHS Prom

Published by Lois Lame, Advertising, Subcriber Services and Lifestyles

Hermann Hearsay declined the opportunity to invade the privacy of our local high school juniors and seniors this Saturday by filming them at the Hermann High School Prom.  We just didn't think we should interfere with this right of passage and special social night for our local young people because of some commercial interest on our part.

In our editorial judgment, not every last little thing which occurs in and around Hermann ought be reported by the invasive media.  We reasoned that church services, weddings, funerals, birthday parties, small group social gatherings at local taverns and proms are private matters.  We reasoned that attendees have the right to the presumption of privacy when attending such affairs.

Perhaps, however, our judgment was wrong.  The "red carpet" interviews conducted by CNL were kind of cute.  We will consider doing it next year.  I think I'll approach it a little differently though.  I'll get Jimmy to spring for an expensive and revealing evening gown for me to wear on the "red carpet".  I'll spend more time with each young high school couple and I'll ask the following questions:
  1. What are your names?  Do you have a drivers license?  Who are your parents?
  2. Who designed your evening gown (girl) and where did you rent your tuxedo (boy)?
  3. Have you guys ever dated each other before?
  4. What are your party plans for after the prom?
  5. What do you think of us bugging you and filming the most important night of your high school years?

  1. Lois,

If you aspire to be a big time journalist and take over the CBS anchor role from Katie Couric, don't waste your time interviewing nervous high school kids. Instead, dig for the BIG stories!

  2. Lois,

I never once interviewed a high school kid on prom night during my meteoric rise to the top at NBC. Hey, but what the heck! Maybe it will work for you!
