When Joy and Carol Kallmeyer first asked me to volunteer as a tour guide at the German School Museum I tried to think of some plausible excuses for not volunteering. I'm retired, so I didn't really have any good excuses. Besides, Joy and Carol are great people, making it especially hard to turn them down when they asked me for a favor. So I eventually said "Alright, I'll do it!"
Tuesday afternoon is my time to work at the Germann School Museum. Except that it's really not like work at all! It's been fun to help out along with the many other friendly volunteers. It's been fun to meet and talk with the visitors from all over the USA as well as some from outside the USA. It's been fun to learn more about the history of Hermann, the German culture and the old German School.
I attended the first grade at the Germann School. Mrs. Mabel Sohns was my first grade teacher. I transferred to the then new elementary school building on 7th Street for the second grade. I don't remember a lot from the first grade anymore, but I do remember that we brought our lunches to school in paper bags or cool "Lone Ranger" lunch boxes. At the new elementary school, we could eat hot meals in the school cafeteria.
If you have never toured through the German School Museum, you really owe it to yourself to do so. For the $5 admission fee, the tour is a great value! You can stay as long as you like and view all the great artifacts on exhibit.
Historic Hermann, Inc., a non-profit organization, maintains and operates the German School Museum. Your donations to Historic Hermann, Inc. and purchase proceeds at the German School Museum go toward the preservation of this great Hemann asset.
