Sleet and snowfall in Hermann has lightened considerably.  But more is on its way from the west and southwest.  We are currently in a lull.  The worst is still to come this evening!

MoDOT and the Missouri Highway Patrol have just announced they are closing I-70 from the Highway 13 and Highway 65 exits to Sedalia all the way east to Wentzville.  The blizzard is causing dangerous white-out conditions in central Missouri.  And it is moving east!

CURRENT CONDITIONS IN HERMANN:  20 F, wind N 15 mph, Feel-Like-Temp 1 F, very light sleet, 8" new sleet/snow accumulation

Owensville weather spotter, Cletus Snow, called in during the past hour to report that the snow in Owensville has changed back over to sleet.  Cletus told us that there is a 3" mix of sleet and snow on the ground.  Cletus has pulled his 4-wheel drive pickup truck off the road, and is resting comfortably at home.

At noon on Tuesday, 2/1/2012, the snow continues to fall and fall and fall. Our trained Storm Team spotters have taken refuge indoors where they could.  It has been bitterly cold here in Hermann, and I am concerned that Charlie and Winston may have succumbed to frostbite.  They have both exhausted their supplies of brandy and Hershey's candy bars.  Their cellphone batteries have gone completely dead.  Being trained weather spotters, however, I am not overly worried.  They are both resourceful and will probably show up later.

Conditions in Hermann:  Snowing steadily, 6" new snow accumulation, winds NW 15 mph gusting to 25 mph, temperature 22 F, and "feel-like temperature" is "colder than a well-digger's ass in Alaska".

You don't want to be out in this stuff!  We are approaching near whiteout conditions!  It's a scene from "The Shining"!  Two weather spotters, Charlie and Winston, are temporarily lost!  We haven't heard from our spotters in Owensville and Canaan since about 10 a.m.!

Hermann Hearsay Storm Team personnel have noted that the CNL Storm Team is evidently "sleeping in" during Missouri's "blizzard of the century".  No weather updates (or any other articles) have been posted on CNL since 7:27 p.m. on Monday evening, 2/1/2011.  Maybe the CNL boys will pop back up and publish an article tomorrow on Groundhog Day?!

Sleet Turns to Large Flakes of Snow in Owensville at 8:30 a.m.

Trained weather spotter, Cletus "Snowman" Snow, called in around 8:40 a.m. to report that heavy sleet in Owensville had turned to snow at around 8:30 a.m.  Cletus is out in his 4-wheel drive pickup truck.  Fred stayed home this morning, choosing not to get his paws wet in the snow.

Cletus mentioned driving past the offices of The Gasconade County Republican at around 7:30 a.m.  He said he saw no signs of activity in their newsroom at that time.  Apparently their weather team is sleeping in this morning.  We have a call into Managing Editor Dave Marner to see if he could use some help from Cletus.

Again, if you don't have to get out today, please stay at home.  Our trained weather spotters have to be out in this God awful weather, but you don't.  Our weather spotters have been trained to drive over icy, snow-covered roads.  Leave this dangerous job to Charlie, Cletus and Winston.

Charlie Farquharson (Ward 1) and Winston Weatherly (Ward 2) have been on their posts all night.  They report that light snow began falling in Hermann right around 4:30 a.m. this morning.  The intensity of the snow fall remains light but seems to be increasing.  It is currently snowing here in Hermann, there is no wind and it is colder than a well digger's ass in Alaska, about 25 F we reckon.  Although the streets and highways have a light coating of snow on them, motorists seem to be moving around on them OK. We will update weather and road conditions throughout the day.

Folks, if you don't have to get out today, please remain in you cozy warm homes.  Being out on a day is a job best left to us professionals!  Charlie and Winston have been doing this winter weather spotting for many years.  They are seasoned veterans.  They know just how much brandy to drink in cold weather like this.  And they also know to wear layers of clothing, waterproof, insulated boots and a thick cap with ear muffs!  We'll let you know when it's safe to come back out!

From our volunteer Storm Team weather spotters, Cletus and his trusty dog Fred, reporting in from way down south in Canaan and Owensville:

"Roads were wet and glazing at 4 a.m. in the Canaan and Owensville areas. At 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. we are getting sleet and the roads are white but driving is fair on Hwy 28. We will be traveling to Owensville for more salt this morning and give an update at 8 or 9 a.m."

You and Fred be careful out there!
