Watkins Weekend Weather Report - Friday, 8/27 thru Sunday, 8/29

Published by Frank Furter, IT Manager, Weekend Weather Reporter, Custodian and Coffee Brewer

Date:  8/27/2010

Hi folks!  This is Frank Furter.  I've been asked to take over the weekend weather reporting from Charlie Farquharson.  It turns out that Hermann Hearsay can no longer afford Charlie, so I've been asked to give weather forecasting a shot.  Apparently I work a lot cheaper than Charlie ...... and well, they're already payin' me to do some other stuff anyway!

The Watkins Weekend Weather Report is now sponsored by local Watkins Independent Associate Dick Schaefer (#378589).  Dick doesn't actually pay us cash money for sponsoring the weather report.  Instead he supplies us with Watkins cleaning products for the office.  These are the products I use everyday when I clean our office and wash the windows.  You see, I'm also the custodian here at Hermann Hearsay.

Please support Dick by buying his high quality Watkins products made from "all natural ingredients".

Welcome to my very first weekend weather report for the local Hermann area......

Today: Sunny. High near 85F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph.
Tonight: Mainly clear. Low 56F. Winds ESE at 5 to 10 mph.
Tomorrow: Mainly sunny. High 88F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph.
Tomorrow night: Clear. Low near 65F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph.
Sunday: Mix of sun and clouds. Highs in the upper 80s and lows in the mid 60s.

It's gonna be a great weekend, folks!  So go out and enjoy it!

Quote Of The Day - Friday, 8/27/2010

From Wikipedia ....

The following unverified quotation has been attributed to Alexander Tytler, most notably as part of a longer piece which began circulating on the Internet shortly after the 2000 U.S. Presidential Election:

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:
  • From bondage to spiritual faith;
  • From spiritual faith to great courage;
  • From courage to liberty;
  • From liberty to abundance;
  • From abundance to complacency;
  • From complacency to apathy;
  • From apathy to dependence;
  • From dependence back into bondage."
There is no reliable record of Alexander Tytler's having made the statement.  In fact, this passage actually comprises two quotations, which didn't begin to appear together until the 1970s. The first portion first appeared on December 9, 1951, as part of what appears to be an op-ed piece in The Daily Oklahoman under the byline Elmer T. Peterson. The original version was as follows:

Two centuries ago, a somewhat obscure Scotsman named Tytler made this profound observation:  "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy."

The list beginning "From bondage to spiritual faith" is commonly known as the "Tytler Cycle" or the "Fatal Sequence". Its first known appearance is in a 1943 speech "Industrial Management in a Republic" by H. W. Prentis, president of the Armstrong Cork Company and former president of the National Association of Manufacturers, and appears to be original to Prentis.

John 15:18-19 – You do not belong to the world

"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you."  ~ John 15:18-19
