Quote Of The Day - "Conflict Of Interest" by Brendan Scott - Friday, 2/25/2011

The following quotation is attributed to a blogger named Brendan Scott*:

"The test for a conflict of interest is:

  • whether you could be (not whether you are) influenced by your private interest in carrying out your official duties, or
  • whether people are likely to believe that you could be influenced.
If the public suspect the worst, your reputation and that of the council [or organization with which you are affiliated] will be damaged, however sure you may be of your ground. So, even if you are certain your motives and actions are beyond reproach, you should avoid involvement in anything that could be construed as being influenced by personal interests."

And so now I ask our readers to carefully consider the following:

Does a "conflict of interest" exist when a member of the Hermann City Council is also a part-owner in a local online "news" website which reports on the deliberations and actions of that same municipal council? 

I say that a "conflict of interest" does exist in that situation, and therefore I call upon Brian Chorley to either resign his position as Ward 2 Alderman on the Hermann City Council or resign his position with and dissolve his ownership interest in CountyNewsLIVE.com, a local online "news" publication.

Editorial Comment - Hermann Hearsay Endorses Joe Gleeson and John Penning

The Editorial Board of Hermann Hearsay announced on 2/12 that we are endorsing the candidacies of Joe Gleeson for Hermann Ward 2 Alderman and John Penning for Ward 1 Alderman. We have known these two gentlemen for a long time, and we believe that they are the best candidates to represent their respective wards and help lead our small community forward into the future.

Information received today from a credible source close to the Hermann City Administration has confirmed that we are completely justified in endorsing these two candidates.  Our source prefers to remain anonymous, and we shall honor his (her) request.

Don't forget to get out and vote your conscience.  The election is now just 6 weeks away!

Four new blog websites were registered today in anticipation of our expansion plans this spring. The three new sites are:


The entire Hermann Hearsay family of blog sites will be conveniently linked together, and you will be able to navigate from one site to another with the simple click of your mouse.

Templates for the blog websites have been selected, but NO CONTENT has been posted to any of the new sites as of yet. When content is posted, we will announce the launch of these sites.

Once again, these sites will be entirely FREE to our readers. We will not ask for, collect, or sell your private personal information to any third parties. Readers will not be subjected to an intrusive registration process. There will be no subscription fees. You may comment anonymously if you wish or you don't need to comment at all if that is your wish.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. – Proverbs 9:10

What if wisdom were not a body of facts but a relationship? As children of the Enlightenment, we tend to want enough data in order to make a logical decision, but according to Scripture, wisdom has a foundation in the fear of the Lord. This kind of fear is different than what we often think of. This fear is a reverence and awe for God that fills us so much that it dictates every decision that we make. When we base our understanding of the world around us upon God’s nature and character in Scripture, we enter into true wisdom.
