The following article was written nearly a month ago by Bob Lonsberry. Yet it is still worth reading. The media has been praising the accomplishments of President Obama during the "lame duck" Congress. And I'm afraid many Americans have taken comfort knowing that the Democrats and Republicans were able to work in a bi-partisan way to make deals. I'm not sure any of us should be so euphoric. Bob Lonsberry points this out in his 12/7 article which is copied and pasted hereinbelow. There are many other thought provoking articles on Bob Lonsberry. I recomment that you visit his website and read more of his writings. Look for a list of his writings in date order near the bottom of his Home page.

OBAMA AND THE GOP UP TO OLD TRICKS

Bob Lonsberry

They made a deal.
Last night, Barack Obama and the Republicans in the Congress made a deal.
They all worked together and played nice and got the people's work done.
Which should make me happy.
Unfortunately, it doesn't.
Because much more working together like that, and our country will go belly up.
I don’t want to be negative, and I'm not trying to be a jerk, but this deal is right out of the reality-denying past that has just about bankrupted our country.
You've heard the headlines. The so-called Bush tax cuts are extended, working families get to keep some $3,000, unemployment is extended. Everything is hunky dory.
Except it's not.
Let's go down the list.
Tax cuts, an extra 13 months of unemployment benefits for untold millions, and a reduction in the amount of Social Security tax collected from payrolls.
All of those things may sound nice, and they all have their constituencies, but they all translate into one thing.
More debt.
At a time when we are on the verge of collapse because of deficit spending and the accumulated debt, Democrats and Republicans have agreed on a deal that is financed exclusively in red ink.
Yes, tax cuts are good. But not if they aren't balanced with corresponding spending cuts. Tax cuts without spending cuts are not tax cuts, they are tax deferments. They simply transfer the tax to the future, when the debt comes due, and they add to it compounding interest.
Tax cuts without spending cuts are insane. They do not stimulate the economy, they strangle the future.
Tacking on 56 additional weeks of unemployment checks, to people who have already gotten 99 weeks, means that they can now expect to receive three years of weekly checks averaging $300. The need to find work has been pushed back for three complete years, and untold millions have discovered a new welfare entitlement.
And that costs money.
Then there's the reduction in the Social Security payroll tax, which hasn't been completely described yet. Nonetheless, inasmuch as Social Security goes directly into the general fund and is consequently nothing but a second income tax, the reduction in the payroll tax will decrease the amount of money coming into the federal treasury.
And that will happen without corresponding cuts, so it will not be a true tax cut, it will be a tax deferment.
Further, the deal includes the expansion and extension of various tax credits from the Obama stimulus. Those tax credits are nothing other than welfare payments. More and bigger checks to more people.
And all of that will be covered by more debt.
In the first significant political act of the post-election reality, the Democrats and the Republicans have agreed to dive deeper in the red ink.
One of the overwhelming issues of the recent election, deficit and debt, has been completely ignored in the first political deal after the election.
That's a bad sign for the next two years.
Because, no, Barack Obama didn't learn anything from the recent election. And it looks like Senate Republicans didn't either.
Which brings us to an old adage: When the politicians are agreeing, the people need to worry.
Because if they're not screwing each other, they're screwing us.
And this deal is a big screwing.
It allows them to go forward, it lets them each play nice to their constituencies, and it leaves us the tab.
Like every major federal initiative since the Social Security Act of 1936, the politicians have looked to others to pay their bills. They buy votes with taxpayers' money, bribing with a government check, and sending the tab along to the future. And this deal continues that.
It's like a person with lung cancer, with the oxygen tube in his nose, lighting up a cigarette.
And it's wrong.
The most important thing we can do is balance our budget and pay our debt. And that is going to hurt. One side will have to forego tax cuts, and the other side will have to forego welfare checks. It's that simple. Everything has to be cut.
In this deal, nothing was cut. The age-old purchase of votes continues.
And the hole gets deeper.
Let's hope the Republicans in the House understood the meaning of the election. Let's hope somebody stands up for reason and balanced books.
Let's hope they don't kill our country.

A funny joke about making New Year's resolutions about healthy diet:
The teacher in a Bible class asked a woman to read from the Book of Numbers about the Israelites wandering in the desert. "The Lord heard you when you wailed, 'If only we had meat to eat!' " she began. "Now the Lord will give you meat. You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, or ten or twenty days, but for a month—until you loathe it."
When the woman finished, she paused, looked up, and said, "Hey, isn't that the Atkins diet?"

Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance- for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. – Proverbs 1:5-6
One of the traits that Solomon valued was the gaining of knowledge and wisdom. This proverb reminds us to never stop being students of the Scripture and the world around us. To the degree that we don’t allow others to instruct us, we place a lid over our own progress. As we prepare for the New Year, may we recommit ourselves to becoming students again. To lose our “expert” opinions puts us back on the trail of adding to our knowledge. The wise know that they need this. How about you and I?

Here's a report out of Hornell, NY which I thought our readers would be interested to read. I've had CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs installed throughout my homes for years, and I have never experienced what a family experienced recently in Hornell.
If any of our readers have ever experienced an explosion of a CFL bulb, please let us know.

Hornell, N.Y. — A compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) is to blame for an accidental electrical fire in Hornell Wednesday morning, said Steuben County Fire Investigator Joe Gerych.
“"Those are the lights everybody's been telling us to use," he said. “"It blew up like a bomb. It spattered all over."
A CFL on the ceiling burst, said Gerych, and gas inside the CFL bulb helped start the fire. He added exploding CFLs are rare.
The North Hornell Fire Department responded to a call from the McNeill residence, 7185 N. Main St. Ext., Hornellsville, a little before 7 a.m. Wednesday, said North Hornell Fire Chief Mike Robbins.
The department arrived minutes later and extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes, said Robbins. The fire didn't spread beyond the room of origin. Robbins said the room where the fire started, and everything in the room, was destroyed in the blaze. The rest of the house suffered smoke and water damage.
The Arkport Village Fire Department and Steuben County Sheriff's deputies also responded. Deputies said a mother, two children, and several pets were in the house when the fire started. There were no injuries.
The fire department did a good job limiting the damage, said Robbins.
“"It was a good response. We contained it to one room. There was smoke damage throughout the house. But there wasn't as much water damage as I thought there would be. It could have been much worse,"” he said.
State Police Inv. Don Rodbourn said there won't be charges if the fire is ruled accidental.
The Tribune published a story in Tuesday's newspaper warning of some of the dangers of using compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Waylon Arnold Jennings (June 15, 1937 February 13, 2002) was an influential American country music singer and musician.
A series of duet albums with Willie Nelson in the late 1970s culminated in the 1978 crossover hit, "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys".
Willie Hugh Nelson (born April 30, 1933) is an American country singer-songwriter, author, poet and actor.
Along with Nelson, Waylon Jennings was also achieving success in country music in the early 1970s, and the pair were soon combined into a genre called outlaw country ("outlaw" because it did not conform to Nashville standards).
"Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys" is a country music song written by Ed Bruce and Patsy Bruce. It was made famous by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, whose version was first released on their 1978 album Waylon & Willie. The song's lyrics advise mothers to raise their children as doctors or lawyers rather than cowboys, who seem to be "always alone."
The Waylon & Willie version peaked at No. 1 in March 1978, spending four weeks atop the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart.

An old snake goes to see his Doctor. "Doc, I need something for my eyes...can't see well these days". The Doc fixes him up with a pair of glasses and tells him to return in 2 weeks. The snake comes back in 2 weeks and tells the doctor he's very depressed. Doc says, "What's the problem...didn't the glasses help you?" "The glasses are fine doc, I just discovered I've been living with a water hose the past 2 years!"

An old snake goes to see his Doctor. "Doc, I need something for my eyes...can't see well these days". The Doc fixes him up with a pair of glasses and tells him to return in 2 weeks. Ol' Blue and the Rattlesnakes

Legend has it that there was once a hill farmer (and part-time moonshiner and winemaker) who lived around these parts up on top of hill which was surrounded by thick woods. The farmer raised a few chickens, fed a milk cow and tended to his vegetable garden. He had an old bluetick coonhound that was good at treein' coons and squirrels. The farmer called his coonhound "Ol' Blue".
There were a couple of mean old rattlesnakes that lived in a rock den down at a nearby creek branch. Now these rattlesnakes had a nasty habit of crawling up to the farmers cabin to eat mice, of which there were
always plenty. One rattlesnake was 6 ft. long, and his name was "Liar", because he was so deceitful. The other rattlesnake was barely 4-1/2 ft. long. His name was "Pompous", because he was so arrogant.
Now Ol' Blue didn't like or trust these two rattlesnakes one darned bit. Ol' Blue would get to howlin' somethin' fierce when the rattlesnakes slithered up to the cabin or got anywhere near it. Sometimes Ol' Blue would howl at night and keep the farmer from sleepin'. And sometimes Ol' Blue would bark and howl at the rattlesnakes during the daytime. Alas, all of this infernal barkin' and howlin' finally got on the farmer's nerves, and one day after getting no sleep at all the night before, the farmer took out his 12 ga. double-barrel shotgun and, wihout thinking about the consequence of his actions, shot Ol' Blue dead.
Several weeks later, the farmer ran out of his primary source of red meat, coon and squirrel. A few weeks later he got tired of eatin' nothin' but chicken and garden vegetables. The farmer realized that he had made a big mistake by shootin' Ol' Blue.
Then one warm moonlit night in July, the farmer was startled from a deep sleep when he realized that those two rattlesnakes had slithered into his cabin and had gotten into bed with him. The rattlesnakes were disturbed by the farmer waking up, and they gave warning by shaking their rattles in unison.
The rattlesnake named Liar said to the farmer ... "We have eaten all of your mice, and now we plan to eat your chickens!"
"You can't eat my chickens! What will I have left to eat?" the farmer responded.
"We don't care one damned bit what you have left to eat!" the other rattlesnake named Pompous hissed. "Eat the vegetables in your garden!"
The farmer thought for few seconds, and he remembered that his double-barrel shotgun was propped up near the door. The problem was that the gun was not loaded. As it happened, there was a box of 12 ga. shells on his nightstand. He would have to slowly reach for a couple shells. The rattlesnakes did not seem to notice when he reached into the box of shotgun shells. The farmer decided that he would bolt for his gun, load two shells, and try to shoot the rattlesnakes before they could strike at him. Well, to make a long story short, the farmer barely made it out of his bed before the two rattlesnakes struck out at him.
A few months later, a couple turkey hunters happened upon the farmer's cabin. The chickens had been eaten by the rattlesnakes. The vegetable garden was grown over in weeds. And the milk cow was skin and bones. The farmer was found on his cabin floor. He was gripping two 12 ga. shotgun shells in his hand and his double-barrel shotgun was still propped up near to the door. The farmer had not been able to get off a shot!
Moral of the story: 'If you have a dog that barks or howls at snakes, shoot the damned snakes
rather than your dog!"

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. – 2 Corinthians 10:5
There are many weapons that Satan uses against the people of God. One of them is to sway us from Christ with well thought through arguments. This battle is not won with ignorance, but rather the ability to capture those thoughts and submit them to God’s word. That means that we need to know the thoughts of Christ. Learning the Scripture is more than a Sunday School activity — it is renewing your mind to God’s reality. These promises are what give us the ability to rise above the pronouncements that Satan fills our minds with. What thought needs to be taken captive today?

...... this time against Hermann Alderman Dan Wilson.
He just can't help it, folks! It's an obsession, a sickness with him!
In his article dated Saturday, 1/1/2011 regarding the closing of Trapper's Grill in Hermann, the local publisher of online adsheet, CNL, and resident of Berger, MO, wrote this:
"The owner said a conflict over sidewalk seating that got personal in May of 2010 between Wyne [Steve Wyne, owner of Trapper's Grill] and Hermann alderman Dan Wilson had nothing at all to do with the decision to close the restaurant and bar."
This information is irrelevant to the main storyline, which is the fact that Trapper's Grill at 4th & Market Streets has closed effective January 1, 2011. Period. End of story. Mr. Wyne even admitted that it had nothing to do with closing his restaurant. But oh no, Mr. Noedel felt obliged to include a little back-handed "swipe" at Hermann Alderman Dan Wilson anyway!
This isn't the first time Noedel has seen fit to take a "swipe" against someone. Usually the targets of his "journalistic venom" are Northern District Associate Commissioner Matt Penning and his father, Hermann Alderman John Penning.
Well, Mr. Noedel, take a "swipe" at me! Go ahead, make my day!
