Stony Hill Picnic Attendee Not Mentioned In CNL Article

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

An article was published in CountyNewsLIVE.com about the Stony Hill Picnic this past Friday, 7/16.  You may click on the following link to read the article and view the color photos taken by Jeff Noedel, CNL Publisher:

http://www.countynewslive.com/content/2010/jul/17/stony-hill-picnic-five-flavors-ice-cream-and-least-many-flavors-politics.

This article was clearly intended to give media exposure to some of the attending local political candidates.  Conspicuously absent of any mention or photo in the Jeff Noedel article but not absent at the picnic was Sharon Meyer, Democratic candidate for County Clerk.  In the interest of reporting accuracy and fairness to Ms. Meyer, Hermann Hearsay feels compelled to report this "oversight" by CNL.  It should further be noted that Ms. Meyer has been making the rounds within the county talking to many, many voters and supporters, just as she did Friday evening at the Stony Hill Picnic.  Yes, in the interest of reporting accuracy and fairness, Hermann Hearsay feels compelled to report this observation regarding the Meyer campaign.

Editorial Comment - What's most important in county government .... UNITY or HONESTY and EFFICIENCY?

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

I've been reading some passionate appeals in another local online news publication for UNITY in county government.  One such appeal was made by Jeff Noedel, a local online daily "news" site publisher.  Another similar appeal was made by Brian Chorley, a Hermann alderman and new contributing writer to Mr. Noedel's "news" site.

The great thing about the USA is that we are all free to express our divergent personal viewpoints.  I've given this UNITY thing some thought.  Now I'd like to express my viewpoints on the subject.

As for me, I too would like to see UNITY and HARMONY in our local governments, in both county and city governments.  Who wouldn't want to see cooperation, collaboration and UNITY of purpose?  That would of course make us all "feel" warm and fuzzy, and we might even be lulled into "feeling" that everything is well and good in the way our local governments are being managed.

But what IF that cooperation, collaboration and UNITY of purpose came at the expense of HONESTY and EFFICIENCY in our local goverments?  Would that be a good thing?  No, I don't think so!  Yes, we might temporarily "feel" warm and fuzzy.  But if our tax money was not being spent as efficiently and effectively as possible or if our elected officials were taking care of their own self-interests or the self-interests of their friends and relatives rather than taking care of the broader interests of all taxpayers, then the UNITY that some are calling for would have been purchased at a very high price!

Yes, it does "feel" good to be FAT, DUMB and HAPPY!  But, do you want to be FAT, DUMB and HAPPY or would you rather rest assured knowing that the people representing you in your local governments are fighting for your best interests as a taxpayer rather than cooperating and perhaps even colluding together to protect the best interests of a select few?  Do you want your elected representatives to "roll over" and go right along with others just for the sake of UNITY?  Or do you want your elected representatives to fight for your best interests as a taxpayer ..... even if doing so means going against the flow and stepping on some toes at times?

I find it rather peculiar that we hear these self-rightous calls for UNITY right on the heels of the very heated and public debate over the bidding out of the county's tire and tire services purchases.  The new "no-bid" tire purchasing program which Presiding Commissioner Ron Jost and Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore have proposed and voted into effect is, in my considered opinion, wrong and misguided.  Northern District Assoicate Commissioner Matt Penning tried to point this out to his colleagues on the County Commission, but he was out-voted 2-1.  I suppose Noedel and Chorley, if they were truly objective, might say that Penning is more interested in HONESTY and EFFICIENCY of government than he is in UNITY amongst the three county commissioners.  But they don't even give Penning credit for this.  Instead they attempt to lead the reader into believing that Penning is carrying on some personal feud.  And that, my friends, is just DISHONEST reporting on their parts!

Commissioner Penning is making his stand for HONESTY and EFFICIENCY in county goverment.  Jost and Lairmore are apparently making their stand for the protection of Jost's family tire business in Owensville.  Jost and Lairmore have had their say in open sessions of the County Commission.  Penning has likewise had his say.  And soon, the voters in Gasconade County will have their say!

And ya know what?  In the final analysis, it's not going to matter one tiny hill of beans what Messrs. Noedel and Chorley have had to say about UNITY in county goverment!

Branson Update #2

Published by Dick Schaefer, Contributing Writer and Part-time Investigative Reporter

Friday has arrived way too soon!  It's almost time to head back to the real world ..... unless, that is, I can talk Jimmy out of another week of vacation!  Wish me luck on that one!

Last night we saw 'Eras Of The King', an Elvis Presley tribute concert.  This concert was in Branson's oldest theatre, the 75 year-old Owens Theatre in Downtown Branson.  Joseph Hall, a 25 year-old Elvis impersonator is a great talent!  He has appeared several times on theTV show 'America's Got Talent'.  If you're an Elvis fan (and who isn't), you don't want to miss this show the next time you're in Branson.

As I compose this report, we are heading out for lunch at 'Mel's Hard Luck Diner' where we will be waited upon by singing and dancing servers.  That will be a unique experience, I'm sure!

Tonight we'll be heading out to the Mansion Theatre just north of Branson to see the 'Liverpool Legends', a Beatle's tribute concert which has been put together by Louise Harrison, the sister of the late George Harrison.  This show was recommended to me by young lady from Hermann who now lives with her father in Branson.

Politicians are like baby diapers .....

Published by Dick Schaefer, Contributing Writer and Part-time Investigative Reporter

In the 2006 movie "Man Of The Year", comedian Tom Dobbs (played by Robin Williams) becomes President of the United States.  When interviewed by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey on 'Saturday Night Live', Dobbs quips .....

"Politicians are like baby diapers.  They should be changed often ..... and for the same reason!"

On August 3rd, the citizens of Gasconade County will have a chance to make a change.  The change is long overdue.  And the stench has become unbearable!

Editorial Comment: UNITED FOR CHANGE

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

The publisher of another online daily "news service" has called for UNITY in Gasconade County.  He has called for PEACE between North and South.  He has called for those who are challenging the way in which the affairs of Gasconade County are managed to just hush their mouths and BE SILENT.  He wants the tire bidding controversy and other justifiable questioning about the proper management of Gasconade County to JUST GO AWAY!

Ha ha ha!  Not so fast, Mr. Noedel!  Not so fast!

First of all, there is no conflict between North and South.  That's a "straw dog argument" you would have your readers believe, apparently for your own self-promotional purposes.  People in the northern district and in the southern district of this beautiful little county want many of the very same things.  Afterall, we are all the same people.  Oh yeah, we have intense rivalry in high school baseball, basketball and football.  I still recall my Hermann High School days when we competed fiercely against the Dutchmen in baseball and basketball.  (We didn't have football back in those days.)  We loved to beat them, and they loved to beat us!  But that was just a high school rivalry!

We must remember that we here in the north are linked to our brethren in the south by our common heritage, and we are linked by our shared values.  We all want honest, efficient and effective county government and municipal governments.  We want our local governments and community leaders to have the necessary vision to proactively move ahead for the future benefit of this county and all communities which make up the county ..... and not solely for the benefit of a few monied interests in any one community.  We all want our elected county leaders to maintain, preserve and upgrade (as needed) the assets of the county, leaving these assets for our children and grandchildren in better shape than they found them.  We want our leaders to proactively plan ahead for the future needs of our county and each community within the county.

No, Mr. Noedel, we the people of Gasconade County are NOT divided ...... NOR will we EVER allow ourselves to be divided by one unprofessional, self-promoting, publicity seeking "news publisher", NOR by two unprofessional, self-serving county commissioners who are fighting harder to protect the interests of certain monied interests in Owensville who have a building and property to pawn off on the county and to protect the financial interests of their family-owned tire businesses in Owensville rather than protecting the broader general interests of ALL Gasconade County taxpayers.

No, Mr. Noedel, the people of Gasconade County are smarter than you evidently think we are.  You underestimate us.  We understand that many of our county and community problems stem from a lack of visionary leadership in local government as well as an unhealthy preoccupation with the protection of certain monied interests in Owensville who continue to work for a change in the county seat.  In our county government, we have seen that Presiding Commissioner Jost and Southern District Associate Commissioner Lairmore have done absolutely NOTHING to move Gasconade County forward into the 21st century.  For all of your attempts to point the finger of blame singularly at Northern District Associate Commissioner Matt Penning, first elected to office in 2008, you CANNOT explain to your readers why the Jost-Lairmore controlled County Commission has been unable to move Gasconade County forward during their multiple terms of office.

In your recent article, Mr. Noedel, you bemoan the relatively high unemployment rate in Gasconade County.  Tell me then, how do you blame the high unemployment rate on Matt PenningRon Jost and Jerry Lairmore control the County Commission by a 2-1 vote, as they have for many years before Penning unseated Max Aubuchon.  What have Jost and Lairmore done to bring jobs to Gasconade County?  Where are all of those jobs that they will tell you they've brought to Gasconade County?  Where?!

Where is the improved infrastructure of Gasconade County?  Are the county roads and county bridges improved?  Has the county courthouse been maintained, preserved and restored?  Does the County Commission under Jost's leadership have a plan for the courthouse (other than to move it to Owensville)?  Has a sorely needed annex for expanded and modernized county offices been constructed?  Has the planning for it even begun under the Jost-Lairmore contolled County Commission.  And how have Jost and Lairmore managed the county's annual operating budget?  I think we all know the answer to that question!  They don't manage it.  They wait until the budget is in trouble and then react!

You see, Mr. Noedel, there really is UNITY in Gasconade County.  There is a growing UNITY OF OPINION that changes in county leadership are needed.  The citizens of Gasconade County are UNITED FOR CHANGE, Mr. Noedel.  You have just misread our mood.  That CHANGE will begin to come when we remove Ron Jost as Presiding Commissioner of Gasconade County on August 3rd and replace him with Larry Miskel.  That change will continue in November of 2012 when the voters of the Southern District of Gasconade County return Jerry Lairmore to the private sector and elect someone who better represents their interests.

Yes, Mr. Noedel, we the people of Gasconade County are finally UNITED FOR CHANGE!  We know where the problems in county government lay.  We know who IS to blame.  And we know who IS NOT to blame.  The citizens of Gasconade County will begin making the necessary CHANGES on August 3rd!

VOTE FOR CHANGE!
VOTE FOR LARRY MISKEL!

Matt Penning Consents To Exclusive Interview With HermannNEWS.com

Published by Jimmy Oldsun, NDRIRSRWRAFTC & Editor

Northern District Associate Commissioner Matt Penning doesn't do many interviews with the local press.  But Mr. Penning recently consented to an exclusive interview with Anna Wiegenstein of HermannNEWS.com.  According to reliable sources, Penning's interview with Ms. Wiegenstein was filmed this week.  We expect that it will be published any day now.

Hermann Hearsay is a supporter of Matt Penning.  Hermann Hearsay also has a reciprocal website linking agreement with HermannNEWS.com.  We like their fair and balanced local news reporting, and they apparently like our local political commentary.  We are happy to see that Matt did his exclusive interview with Anna WiegensteinAnna is a fair and balanced, highly accurate,
professional young reporter.  She's a true journalist without a personal agenda.  We are confident that Anna's interview with Matt will be accurate and unbiased.

Look for Anna's hard-hitting exclusive interview with Matt Penning at:  http://www.hermannnews.com/ .  My source tells me that Matt Penning doesn't pull any punches in this revealing interview!

Branson Update #1

Published by Dick Schaefer, Contributing Writer and Part-time Investigative Reporter

Having a great time down here in Branson!  Branson has grown a lot since I last visited in 1995.

Great Ozark Mountain scenery, great entertainment, great food, great timeshare condo accomodations!  I could actually see myself retiring down here.  It'll be either here in Branson or in Columbia.

Matt Penning advised we checkout Landry's Seafood Restaurant on the strip (Hwy. 76).  We've been there twice already and will probably hit it a third time before we leave Branson!  Good recommendation, Matt!  We also found a great Italian restaurant on Green Mountain Drive in Branson ..... Florentina's Italian Restaurant.  I absolutely love it!  We'll probably visit it one more time before returning to Hermann.

I'm really enjoying the live entertainment in Branson!  All shows are reasonably priced, and so far we've been fortunate to have had great seating!  Two shows in the first row, center stage.  Two shows in the second row, center stage.  And one show in the seventh row, center stage.  So far we've seen 'Always, Patsy Cline' (A great Patsy Cline impersonator sings Patsy's hit songs and tells her life story.  Lisa Layne sounds EXACTLY like and has all the mannerisms of country singing legend Patsy Cline.), 'Legends in Concert' (Great impersonations of the Blues Brothers, Little Richard, Alan Jackson, Britney Spears and Elvis Presley.), 'Bill Medley In Concert' with daughter McKenna Medley (Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers is still going strong at age 69!), 'John Denver Tribute' (James Garrett and his band do a fantastic job with John Denver's music as they relate interesting stories of John Denver's life.), and the 'Brett Family' (A very talented musical family!  I missed them when they appeared in Hermann, so I wanted to see them in Branson.)

Tonight we're headed out to see 'NOAH The Musical', a Bible story brought to life on the largest stage in Branson, a wrap-around stage over 300 feet wide.  Thursday night we have tickets for an Elvis show. 'Eras Of The King', at the Owens Theatre in Downtown Branson.  And on Friday night, we'll be seeing the 'Liverpool Legends' (A Beatles concert which we have been told is super!)

Life is good in Branson, Missouri!  If, like me, you haven't been to Branson in a number of years, make plans to visit again.  If you've never been to Branson, put it on your 'Bucket List'.

Now, if you're not really "into" the live entertainment in Branson, there is great sport fishing and recreational boating on the surrounding lakes:  Lake Tanneycomo, Table Rock Lake and Bull Shoals.  Years ago, when I had my bass boat, I fished all three lakes.  Beautiful mountain surroundings!  And I occasionally even caught a fish!  There are also some great golf courses, and from what I've observed, they don't seem to be "over-played".  I'm sure you'll be able to schedule tee-times!

Gotta run now!  Just wanted to take a few moments from my vacation time to tell you about the sparkling jewel of southwest Missouri which is Branson!

Headed to Branson, for a week or two of R&R .......

Published by Dick Schaefer, Contributing Writer and Part-time Investigative Reporter

I'm on my way down to Branson.  I haven't been down there in about 15 years, so I'm really looking forward to the shows, the lakes and hopefully some good restaurants!

If you want to know what happens at the County Commission Meetings, I urge you to attend the meetings yourself.  Or you can always go to HermannNEWS.com and read Anna Weigenstein's reports on the meetings.  Don Kruse might also choose to cover the next few meetings.

Well, I've got to run!

So, from cool cat 'Tator_Tot' and me, this song goes out to my special "friends" .....

The County Tire Controversy ..... Part IV: Why does Jeff Noedel, CNL Publisher, go out of his way to slam Matt Penning every chance he gets?

Published by Dick Schaefer, Contributing Writer and Part-time Investigative Reporter

Well, Hermann Hearsay readers and concerned taxpayers, we've finally come to Part IV of my four-part series on the Gasconade County controversy.  I've tried to lay out the material facts of the controversy over the purchasing of tires and tires services in the county.  I've tried to provide some facts and figures.  I've tried to explain why Northern District Associate Commissioner Matt Penning has been concerned about the"irregularities" he has found in the paid tire and tire services invoices he has examined during the approximate four year period from 4/18/2005 through 7/25/2009.  I have tried to tell you why he and others (myself included) believe that Presiding Commissioner Ron Jost and Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore made a very unwise decision on 7/1 when they both voted to move to a "no-bid" purchasing program for tires and tire services.

The local reporting about this county controversy as been more than "interesting" to observe.  I don't know what your observations have been, but my observations have been as follows:
  1. Don Kruse at The Hermann Advertiser-Courier hasn't covered every County Commission Meeting during which this topic has been prominently debated.  However, when Don has reported on this controversy, he has been very professional .... fair and balanced, factual and accurate.  Don is a good journalist who received his formal education and training in journalism at Lincoln University in Jefferson City.  I wish Don could attend all the Commission Meetings, but being the only reporter at The A-C, Don is forced to prioritize where he spends his time and what he reports.
  2. Anna Wiegenstein at HermannNEWS.com has attended most of the County Commission Meetings during which this topic has been debated.  Anna's reports are also very professional .... fair and balance, factual and accurate.  Anna is a young reporter who graduated from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.  She is a good journalist now.  She will one day be a great journalist.  Glenn and Carol Warnebold got a "good one" when they hired Anna and brought her to Hermann!
  3. Dave Marner, Managing Editor, at the Gasconade County Republican attends County Commission Meetings when they are held in Owensville.  His attendance at County Commission Meetings in Hermann has been spotty at best, although I will have to say that Mr. Marner is "Johnny-on-the-spot" when tipped off that something controversial is going to be discussed such as the tire contract controversy or when tipped off that someone is going to be "ambushed" during a County Commission Meeting.  I didn't really care for his article about the tire contract controversy which was printed in this week's edition of the GCR.  I judged the article to be inaccurate and one-sided.  My understanding is that Mr. Marner has a degree in photo-journalism.
  4. Jeff Noedel, publisher of CountyNewsLIVE.com, covers the County Commission Meetings very regularly.  Mr. Noedel also covers the Thursday morning (7 a.m.) Road and Bridge Deparment Meetings, particularly when he has been tipped off that something controversial is going to be discussed.  Mr. Noedel's reports about tire contract debates at the County Commission Meetings and Road and Bridge Department Meetings have been (in my opinion) one-sided, biased and more focused on the interpersonal sparring that goes on between the Commissioners than upon the actual facts of the county's poorly managed tire and tire services purchasing program.  I think it is obvious to most observers that Mr. Noedel regularly goes out of his way to cast Northern District Associate Commissioner Matt Penning in the worst possible light he can ..... every chance he can.  I have found Mr. Noedel's reports during these tire contract debates to be biased, one-sided, often inaccurate and often embarrassingly superficial with absolutely NO probing into the actual facts of the matter.  To my knowledge, Mr. Noedel has NO formal education or training in the field of journalism.  It shows!
Why does Jeff Noedel, CNL Publisher, go out of his way to slam Matt Penning every chance he gets?  I haven't been the only person to observe this.  This dynamic has been going on for a very long time.  It didn't begin with the county tire contract controversy, and it will NOT likely end with the county tire contract controversy.

Why does a self-proclaimed "unbiased and independent journalist" do what Noedel does?  To be more specific:
  1. Why did Noedel involve himself (along with Commissioners Jost and Lairmore) in the group pile-on accusation, interrogation and brow-beating of Commissioner Penning at the 7/1 Road and Bridge Department Meeting?  Not very "unbiased and independent" if you ask me!  Very unprofessional for a news reporter at any level!  Take a look at Noedel's self-reported, self-incriminating, "copyrighted, all rights reserved", transcript evidence yourself by clicking on:  http://www.countynewslive.com/content/2010/jul/08/full-transcript-last-thursdays-county-road-department-debate  (As a side note, one has to wonder why Presiding Commissioner Jost permitted Mr. Noedel, who has been elected to NO position of authority by the citizens of Gasconade County, would participate in the aggressive, inquisition-style cross-examination of Associate Commissioner Penning?  The only thing these guys didn't do during the cross-examination of Penning was to water-board him!)
  2. Why does Noedel "huddle" with Clerk Lesa Lietzow, Presiding Commisioner Ron Jost, and Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore in the County Clerk's office immediately after so many of the County Commission Meetings?  Afterall, Presiding Commissioner Jost (to his credit) always calls for comments and questions from all meeting attendees at the conclusion of each meeting.  If Noedel has questions or comments, why doesn't he voice them at the appropriate time instead of following Lietzow, Jost and Lairmore like a little puppy back into the Clerk's office when the meeting is over?  I'm not a "journalist", so I can't pretend to know the meaning of these actions.  I only know that I never observe journalists Don Kruse or Anna Wiegenstein participate in these exclusive "post-meeting huddles".  They sit in the open portion of the Commission Meetings, they take notes of the meeting, they take a photo or two and then they ask a question (if they have one) and only when invited to do so by the Presiding Commissioner.
  3. Why does Noedel exchange email messages with Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore and his son, Kyle Lairmore?  What gives with that?  The emails I have seen (there are several) aren't just friendly casual communications which seek to ask honest and legitimate questions about county business or Missouri Deparment of Conservation business.  No siree Bob!  I would have NO problem with such email communications.  But the ones I have seen contain bitter hate speech directed against various individuals such as Matt Penning, Sharon Meyer, Mike Jacquin and me.  Now, I'm a big boy!  "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!"  Bring it on, Jeffy Pooh!  But I am concerned about my friends.  What kind of "unbiased and independent journalist" engages in this type of paranoid, hate-driven email communication with an elected public official and his son who is a state employee?
  4. Why does Noedel avoid reporting on the hard facts of the tire contract controversy, choosing instead to parrot the accusations of Jost and Lairmore, who claim that Penning's concerns about county tire and tire services purchasing and accounting are strictly motivated by politics?  Why doesn't Noedel do his homework?  Why doesn't Noedel do some thorough investigative reporting?  Is it because that kind of reporting is too dull, because facts and figures make the eyes of busy readers glaze over, etc.?  Or is it because it would turn up real facts which contradict what Jost and Lairmore are saying?  My friends, is it because Mr. Noedel has long ago decided who he was going support and who he was going to slam ...... with absolutely NO regard for the actual merits of their respective positions?
In my opinion, Mr. Noedel has lost whatever "journalistic objectivity" he may have ever had.  Instead of reporting ON the story, Mr. Noedel has increasingly become PART of the story!  As a "journalist", Mr. Noedel has unfortunately lost all credibility in this community.  More and more, he is becoming the laughing stock of this community!  It is time to move on, Mr. Noedel!
