Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far has the LORD helped us.” So the Philistines were subdued and did not invade Israelite territory again. – 1 Samuel 7:12-13a
The Philistines had been victorious against the Israelites prior to this passage, so the Jews turned their heart to heaven and asked the prophet Samuel to pray for them. With their newfound victories, Samuel wanted to set up a visual reminder that would help the Israelites focus on God’s faithfulness in the midst of great challenges. Have you been defeated lately? Turn your heart to heaven. Raise your Ebenezer and remind yourself of the breakthroughs that God has provided in the past. Thus far the Lord has helped us, He will be faithful to carry us forward.
