Gasconade County Jail Poll Follow-up Report

On May 13, we reported that we had commissioned the people at Pooh Research Center to conduct an opinion poll (N=1,000) regarding Commissioner Jerry Lairmore's and Harvey Kahle's misguided idea to build a jail in Gasconade County.  For a quick reference, click on the following link to our original report:

The opinion poll was conducted over the telephone.  Registered voters throughout the county were asked one very simple question:

"Should Gasconade County incur indebtedness by issuing bonds in order to construct and operate its own jail?"

The responses were:

YES! - 10 (1.0%)
NO! - 480 (48.0%)
HELL NO! - 510 (51.0%)

We noted that the results of our poll (N=1,000) are significantly different than the results obtained in the CNL poll (N=111).

Some of the unsolicited comments the Pooh people received from Gasconade County registered voters and taxpayers were as follows:

• "Fine convicted criminals instead of housing them at taxpayer expense!"
• "Sheriff Esphorst has a big enough budget to manage right now!"
• "Keep the criminals out of Gasconade County!"
• "It costs a fortune to operate a jail.  Fine the criminals instead of giving them free room and board!"
• "Tell Commissioner Lairmore to maintain the county courthouse.  We don't need any more county buildings that we can't or won't maintain!"
• "Fine 'em or put 'em to work doing community service work!  God knows there is plenty of work to do!"
• "Fine 'em or put 'em to work doing community service work instead of hauling their asses down to Crawford County or anywhere else!"
• "We've got our priorities all screwed up!  Why spend money on criminals when we need the money for our roads, for our county courthouse and for our county employee wages and benefits?  Stop this insanity of spending more and more on criminals!  Fine them heavily and put them to work doing needed community service work!"
• "We already have 2.1 million people in American prisons and jails!  There has to be a better way!  Let's really get tough on crime by fining the hell out of otherwise "jailable" offenders and by making them do community service work."
