Tigers Open Season With Win Over Illini

The Missouri Tigers fought back after trailing at halftime to beat Illinois 23-13 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis on Saturday.

Quarterback Blaine Gabbert led the Tigers back, countering the Illini rushing attack by throwing for 281 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore T.J. Moe had a record- setting day with 13 receptions, one touchdown and 101 yards.

Cards Win Home Opener!

The St. Louis Cardinals improved their early season record to 5-2, defeating the Houston Astros by a score of 5-0 at Busch Stadium this afternoon.  The Cards lead the N. L. Central Division.

Clark Kant and his new buddies skipped their group therapy session this afternoon to take in the Opening Day festivities at the ballpark.  Clark told me he had three hotdogs, six Bud Lights and some nachos and cheese.  He really enjoyed his first Cardinals' Opening Day ceremonies and game.

Clark was apprehensive about checking himself in for psychiatric evaluation on Thursday of last week, but he now says it is the best thing he has ever done!

Cardinals Open Season In Cincinnati

The St. Louis Cardinals open the 2010 season in Cincinnati against the Reds.  Chris Carpenter will take the mound for the Redbirds, while Aaron Harang will start for the Reds.  The first pitch of the game is scheduled for 12:10 CDT.  The game will be televised by ESPN.

NCAA Men's National Championship Game

Butler Bulldogs vs. Duke Blue Devils.  Did you pick either of these teams to play in the national championship game?  My NCAA tournament bracket was busted long ago!

I have to cover the night desk here at Hermann Hearsay, but I may wonder down to Wings-A-Blazin' to catch the game.  Shssssh!  Don't tell Clark!  Maybe I'll take my laptop along and pretend to work on a story while I'm there.

Home Winning Streak Intact

The Missouri Tiger men's basketball team extended their home winning streak to 30 consecutive games by defeating the #10-ranked Kansas State Wildcats 74-68 at Mizzou Arena on Saturday afternoon.  Only one NCAA team has more consecutive home wins.  That team is the Kansas Jayhawks who currently have 51 consecutive wins in Allen Fieldhouse.

Mizzou, now 13-3 on the year, will face the Texas Tech Red Raiders in another home game at 8 p.m. Wednesday night.  The game will be televised by ESPNU.

A Sad Week for Missouri Sports Fans

Sports fans across the entire state have suffered through one of the worst weeks in Missouri sports history. At least this reporter cannot recall a week any worse than the one which we have just completed.

The week started out with our beloved Cards losing two NLDS games to the Dodgers out in Dodger Stadium. Then on Thursday night, the 24th ranked Missouri Tigers blew a lead over the 21st ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in the 4th quarter on a rain-soaked Faurot Field. On Friday evening, the Dodgers completed their sweep over the Cardinals in a chilly Busch Stadium. The St. Louis Blues then lost their first hockey game of the season. The losing week from hell was capped off on Sunday afternoon by the St. Louis Rams' loss to the Minnesota Vikings and the Kansas City Chief's loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Even our Hermann Bearcats went down to defeat this past Friday .... but that was not much of a surprise.

Once again it looks like Missouri won't be playing for the National Championship, the Cards won't be in the World Series, and neither the Rams nor the Chiefs will make it to the Super Bowl. When does the tiddly wink season begin?!
