• Gas prices are soaring nationwide.  Hermann is no exception.  Today the price of regular gasoline at the Hermann Fuel Mart is $3.749 per gallon.
• The St. Louis Cardinals finally broke out of their hitting slump last night as they defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks by a score of 8-2.  The boys down at the Sharp Corner Tavern report that Roho Efline cussed a blue streak!

• Rumor has it that Chubb E. Buttocks has knocked up Gertrude Schenkelberg.  The couple are planning a June wedding.
• Elmer Fudd's prize sow "Porky" gave birth to eight (8) piglets today.  Elmer named them "Perky", "Pinky", "Patty", "Paulie", "Pee-Wee", "Pokey", "Prissy" and "Pilgrim".

• The Board of Directors of the GCCS (Gasconade County Courthouse Society) will be meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, 4/11 to discuss the general warranty deed which has been drafted by local Attorney Don Althauser for the purpose of conveying ownership of the Roetheli properties to Gasconade County.  The meeting will be held in the second floor courtroom at the County Courthouse, and is open to the public.
• The Bluff-Tones, a popular local band, will perform this Sunday at the Clara Eitmann Messmer Amphitheatre located at Fourth and Gutenberg Streets.  Concert time is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hermann Hearsay

• Stealth candidate for Southern District Associate Commissioner A. E. Newman told Hermann Hearsay today that he has now met and talked with 500 eligible voters from the southern district of Gasconade County.  We have no way to verify Newman's report on his campaign.  We can only say that his claim is entirely possible, because he started campaigning nearly on year ago.
• Rumor has it that Barry Schmelly found a whole "mess" of morel mushrooms this afternoon.

• The price of regular gasoline in Hermann is now $3.649 per gallon.
• Voter turnout for yesterday's local election was pathetically low.  Incumbent Ward 1 Alderman John Penning lost his seat to Bruce Cox.  Bob Arnsmeyer finished second in the three-man race.  Incumbent Ward 2 Alderman Brian Chorley retained his seat, though challenger Joe Gleeson came within only 28 votes of upsetting him.  The Gasconade County R-1 School Board race returned the two incumbents, Craig Schannuth and Marilyn Rethemeyer, who were seeking re-election to the board, and joining them will be Brenda Bader, who ended up garnering the most votes out of five candidates.  Bader, who grew up in the school district (the Bay area) and now lives near Big Spring in Montgomery County, received 786 votes from three counties --Gasconade, Franklin and Montgomery. Schannuth, who is returning to the school board for the second time, received 685 votes and Rethemeyer pulled in 666 votes. Sherry Englert of Rhineland, who ran unsuccessfully for the second time, received 458 votes and Kirk Heil, a first-time candidate who lives near Americus, had 196 votes.

• Local weather included a good dose of sunshine and a high temperature of 78F.  Locals report that they are beginning to find a few morel mushrooms.
• Roho Efline was elated that the Cardinals lost to the Pirates this afternoon by a score of 3-2.  Roho is on a roll!

• The price of regular gasoline is $3.499 per gallon at Hermann Fuel Mart in Hermann today.  Another middle-east "democratic revolution" or two, and we could easily see $4 to $5 per gallon gasoline by Memorial Day.
• Temperatures reached into the 80s today.

Hermann Hearsay

• A local online "news" organization is reporting notable progress on the transfer of the Roetheli properties from the GCCS (Gasconade County Courthouse Society) to Gasconade County based upon the statements of intent by members of the County Commission.  Hermann Hearsay will withhold any premature conclusions (and reporting) that the property has been transferred until the general warranty deeds have been modified to the satisfaction of all parties, signed, executed and properly recorded.  And with regard to construction of the new emergency access road to the courthouse, we will wait to report on that until we actually see base rock being hauled in.  You see with the County Commission, we have found that nothing is ever a "done deal" until it is actually "done".

• Roho Efline rooted for the San Diego Padres to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals today on Opening Day at Busch Stadium.  The Padres won in extra innings by a score of 5-3.  Darn you, Roho!
• The Hermann Municipal Band will begin rehearsals starting Monday, April 4th, in the Hermann High School band room.  Rehearsal will start at 7:00 p.m.  Membership is open to anyone high school age and older.  If interested, call band director Carl Bounds at 573-834-5400.

Hermann Hearsay

• Barry Schmelly, Beulah Bowelmovement, Ben Dover and Gertude Schenkelberg got together to watch American Idol at Gertrude's house last night.  A good time was had by all.  Rumor has it that Ben spent the entire night with Gertrude ..... but please don't repeat that.
• "Ralphie Boy's" first night at the state mental institution in Fulton was uneventful.  Apparently "Ralphie Boy" is fitting in just fine with his new friends and his new surroundings.

• No snow fell in Hermann today.
• The price of gasoline remains higher than most folks can afford.

• There is still no news on the transfer of the Roetheli properties from the GCCS to Gasconade County.  We recommend that you don't hold your breath waiting for the transfer to be finalized.
• "Ralphie Boy" has been committed to a state mental institution for his own safety and well-being.  Further details will follow.
• Elmer Fudd fell off of barstool #3 down at the Sharp Corner Tavern tonight.  Fortunately he was not injured.  Unfortunately his barstool will require minor repairs.

• Steve Mueller provided tour guide training to Ray Ham, John Layman, Mike Martens, and our own Dick Schaefer at the German School Museum this morning.
• Dick Schaefer sampled the quiche at Jillsie's today.  Jillsie's expanded breakfast menu is now available all day long.  Dick reports that Jillsie's quiche is very tasty!

Hermann Hearsay

• Reports are coming in from multiple sources that "Ralphie Boy" is progressively losing his mind as he becomes increasingly obsessed with Hermann Hearsay's harsh criticism of his buddies, Presiding Commissioner Jost and Southern District Associate Commissioner Lairmore.
• Hermann Hearsay checked with a GCCS board member today and learned that there has still been absolutely NO movement with regards to the transfer of the Roetheli properties.  Apparently Presiding Commissioner Jost and Southern District Associate Commissioner Lairmore continue to "look that gift horse in the mouth".  Careful there, Ron and Jerry!  That horse just might get tired of your overly critical inspection and commence to chomping down on your probing fingers!

• Our 5 inches of snow has now completely melted.  Weather forecasters are forecasting the possibility of more snow this week.
• The Final Four is set.  Butler will face VCU while UConn will face Kentucky on Saturday in Houston.

Hermann Hearsay

• An unscientific poll was conducted by Dick Schaefer today.  He asked 10 likely voters from Ward 1 and 10 likely voters from Ward 2 how they intended to vote in their ward's aldermanic election on April 5th.  Here's how the voters responded:  Ward 1 - John Penning (5 votes), Bob Arnsmeyer (3 votes), and Bruce Cox (2 votes).  Ward 2 - Joe Gleeson (6 votes) and Brian Chorley (4 votes).  Don't forget to vote on April 5th!
• Hermann Hearsay understands that Presiding Commissioner Ron Jost and Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore are still blocking the transfer of the Roetheli properties to the People of Gasconade County.  Are Jost and Lairmore looking for the GCCS and Joe Roetheli to "sweeten" the deal in some way?  I suppose an outright gift of $800,000 worth of property which adjoins the County Courthouse just ain't "sweet" enough?!

Hermann News

• It began snowing in Hermann at just after 12 o'clock noon and it continues to snow at 6:30 p.m.  At this time we have 3-4 inches on the ground.
• The turnout at the 32nd Annual Wurstfest has been affected by the inclement weather.  But a good time is being had by the hearty souls who did turnout.

Hermann Hearsay

• Hermann Hearsay reporter Dick Schaefer noted that incumbent city alderman Brian Chorley has a campaign sign in his yard.  Apparently he has not yet withdrawn from the Ward 2 race.  The election will be held on April 5th.  Chorley's challenger in Ward 2 is Joseph T. Gleeson.
• Hermann Hearsay reporter Clark Kant observed today that the county has not yet started construction on the much needed courthouse emergency access road which Presiding Commissioner Jost and Southern District Associate Commissioner Lairmore have been promising for over a year.  Perhaps they will get started when the weather improves?!  Yes, perhaps then?!

• Regular gasoline is selling for $3.459 per gallon in Hermann.  How much higher will it go?  I suppose it's a good thing that U.S. involvement in Libya is just a "kinetic military operation" and not a full-blown shooting war!  LOL.  The photo associated with this story is from the Hermann Fuel Mart.
• Dick Schaefer enjoyed a great fried catfish dinner with all the trimmings at the Hermann V.F.W. this evening.  Dick reports that cod and chicken are also available.  The local V.F.W. Post does a great job with their Friday evening fish dinners during the Lenten season.  Give them a try some time!  They begin serving at 4:30 p.m.

Hermann Hearsay

• We hear tell that Northern District Associate Commissioner Matt Penning may be demoted to "ex-officio" status by his colleagues Presiding Commissioner Ron Jost and Southern District Associate Commissioner Jerry Lairmore.  His colleagues have never really listened to nor heeded Penning's advice on important county matters.  It's always been a 2-1 vote in the Gasconade County Commission.  Therefore it is understandable that his colleagues may move to officially strip him of his voting right altogether.  This story has not been confirmed, but we have heard the same rumor from three different sources.



"Disco Ball"

• We hear that Constance LaBoube, who together with her husband Wayne own and operate The Bank Bar and Schiller Guest Suites, is searching for a "disco ball".  So if you have a "disco ball" you can spare in your attic, please give Constance a call.

• New roof shingles were installed at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Raymie Ochsner by Grotewiel Construction Company Today.  The new roof shingles are black.  We were not able to ascertain whether the Ochsner's roof had been damaged by the heavy hail storm which hit the Hermann area a few weeks ago.
• Temperatures dropped precipitously in the early morning hours.  This week Hermannites have experienced high daytime temperatures in the low 80s and low nightime temperatures in the 30s.  You know what they say about Missouri weather ..... "If you don't like the weather just wait a few days!"

• Rumor has it that Elmer J. Fudd's prize sow had a litter of piglets.  The mother and piglets are all doing fine!
• We've heard tell that Poor Richard is solicitating freewill donations at his rapidly growing news website HermannMoNews.

Hermann Hearsay

• Jimmy had lunch with Cletus, Fred and Henry at Hardee's today.  They discussed Missouri's basketball season and debated whether or not head coach Mike Anderson should be given a $500,000 raise (annual salary $2 million) after a not so brilliant season.  The Tigers lost to the Cincinnati Bearcats in the first round of the NCAA last week.  Meanwhile Arkansas had fired their coach and have been rumored to be waiving big bucks in front of Coach Anderson.  Apparently the Board of Curators will be approving the raise this week.  Cletus was against it.  "With the season Anderson had and today's tough economic times, Anderson should be content with his current contract."  Fred and Henry were in favor of increasing Anderson's salary and extending his contract another two years in order to prevent him from bolting to the Arkansas Razorbacks.  Fred said "He's gonna take us back to the Elite 8 next year and maybe to the Final Four for the first time in the near future.  He's been Missouri's "fastest to 100 wins" men's basketball coach ever.  He had three consecutive 23 game winniung seasons.  And that's something even Norm (referring to Norm Stewart) didn't do!"
