But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. – 1 Timothy 6:6-8
This can sound like heresy in today’s performance driven world, but the gospel tells us that we are not to get our sense of value from our achievements. We are to get our life from God and God alone. The apostle Paul is helping his young disciple Timothy keep the perspective that possessions or money will not bring peace. If anything, to look for satisfaction in material things will only bring anxiety. There is great gain for the person who can achieve their goals (even godly ones) yet not get their sense of worth from those goals. This contentment will free us to be ourselves and protect us from the idolatry of greed.
